A year from now, we’ll all be beating our heads against a wall if they’re STILL deciding, lol – or we’ll be sitting back with some champagne (hopefully)!

Okay, yeah. It’s hard to know how to prep in that case, because she could easily go up 50 points just from different questions/luck.

But do check out SuperTutorTV – she’s a little annoying in her videos, lol, but she’s got good (free) info.

NOOOOOO!!!

What has been your experiences with the impact of weather on your C26s’ impressions of the schools they visited?

Schools toured on rainy days have consistently rated lower in D26’s eyes than schools toured on sunny days. I’m kinda annoyed cuz very no places are cold and rainy 365 days a year…

So I was trying to remember – I think we’ve done about 10 or 12 tours, but we must have gotten very lucky, because I don’t remember a rainy or nasty weather tour (with one outlier that I’ll get to in a second).

We’re in the south, so we did a couple tours in 98 degrees in the summer – but we’re kind of used to that, and it didn’t put off D26.

So, the one exception is RIT – we flew to see it in February over the president’s day break. They had just gotten a big snowstorm that weekend (like it was notable even for Rochester, lol), so we trudged through some major ice and slush on the tour. And it was a wind chill of 4 degrees, but we had over-prepared and were wearing too many layers, so we were DYING of sweat and ended up back in the admissions office stripping down in the bathroom, LOL. Pretty sure everyone was laughing at the quaint southerners.

All that said, D26 loved everything about the school despite the weather. I was kind of surprised – I thought it might really dissuade her – but she liked everything she saw. The vibe was just really working for her. And I think she saw the weather as an adventure.

Seriously, in the Uber on the way back to the airport, she started talking about getting good boots and a good coat so she wouldn’t have to deal with layers – she could just throw it on over her regular clothes. Etc.

We’ll see. If she ends up there, I think I may have to buy one of those special vitamin D lamps for her dorm room!

D19 visited what ended up being her top choice by far when it was pouring rain! Didn’t seem to stop her loving it! We did 2 schools in Boston in April snow with D19 and it actually ended up contrasting one that felt cold and hard to deal with vs one that felt warm and a nice refuge from the weather. There were other factors at play with both too, but the contrast in the same weather was interesting.

C26 has only visited one so far. Glorious weather the day we visited but we had already spent a couple of days in the town /area before and it was cold and a bit snowy. Didn’t seem to faze them.

Following along with this convo and will be looking into this! My daughter’s score was also 1510 but she’s lopsided (790 English/720 math).

She’s looking at some pretty selective engineering schools so really wants to get that math score up. She’s taking again in May and has been focusing on desmos tricks and tips. I may look into this SuperTutor!!

Sadly, or obsessively, or more likely both… I was doing ā€˜the math’ on this in my head when I got into bed last night…
… EA for UNC (and Texas, Michigan, Illinois and NCSU…) typically announces around Mid January so that’s NINE months away. Plus there’s always the odds of being WL on EA and adding another 3-4 months waiting there. I ended up getting out of bed and reading a book on ā€œThe End of the World is just the beginningā€ and somehow found that more comforting.

I think the Ivies are the last to come out, around April 1.

But if you read in the Class of 2025 thread, there are many students who have several acceptances in hand, but they are still deliberating on where they’ll commit. Deadline is May 1, of course.

The thought of it makes me break out into a cold sweat, LOL.

All this talk of making the decision in April has got me wondering - are any of you pushing or nudging for an early decision approach? I have to admit that I’m torn. I think my D26 would really like the idea of being done in December. But then, she said earlier this year that she didn’t want to ED because she didn’t want to commit yet. I definitely get that, but I remember doing ED when I went to college, and it was awesome! Done by mid-December and had all of spring semester with no stress - just thinking about the future, lol!

My D22 did not ED anywhere, even though she was applying to mostly reach schools – because she wasn’t 100% certain in November of her top choice. There was one non-reach school for which she was interviewing for a full ride scholarship, and she was still chewing on whether that would be the best option, etc.

I won’t encourage it with D26, either, because as of right now, she has a couple options where she might get good merit. I would really love to see if the numbers come back wildly different – if there are two schools she likes, sometimes it’s a lot easier to like the school that is $35K a year less!

But I hear you on being done with the stress early. Friend of my daughter’s who is graduating this year got into Wake Forest ED back in December, and this kid was the lead in the school musical in February – and she got to go through that whole fun experience worry-free.

My S25, who is a completely different kind of student and only considered in-state rolling admissions schools, applied to one school in August, found out he was in a couple weeks later, and we haven’t thought about it all year except to put a deposit down on housing and order some merch. Thank goodness, because my brain would have exploded going through the process back to back, LOL.

We are having that discussion currently. D26 is considering ED for Cornell. But obviously she needs to be 100% sure that is where she wants to be. We may go back for a second visit to try to solidify that decision.

I have been thinking about ED for S26 too. He really hasn’t engaged enough to be able to commit so I don’t think he’d be ready to do it. But the temptation to just be done in Dec is real. It’s going to be such a slog.

My D22 ED’d to an Ivy, was rejected. It was tough but she ended up happy she didn’t get in. She did not ED2. She had a great EA round and felt good about her choices so that made waiting easier—but still difficult.

Yeah, C26’s current target and reach school do EA results in January and while I’d expect a likely no for the reach, I’m worried about a WL for the target stretching to April. That’s why even though C26 isn’t sold on the auto-admit rolling schools at the moment I want them to apply just so they have the psychological benefit of something in hand before January.

D19 did ED and it was a huge relief to get the process over mid December, for sure. But none of the schools C26 is looking at at the moment do ED, only EA.

Edit to add D19 was 110% sure of her top choice and would not have done ED if not.

This is sort of what’s happening here. My D26 has a couple of colleges that are towards the top of her list. But she’s not sure. My thought is that if she’s got a good list and has a few that are really interesting, maybe we should revisit and see if she wants to try for an ED at one. But right now she’s not interested in trying to revisit anything. Of course, that may all change when she gets to summer and starts working on essays.

D26 won’t ED anywhere, but will EA to schools on her list that have EA. She’s also going to have some rolling admission schools on the list. When D24 was applying, it was a rolling admission school that she heard from first. She texted me from school the day she heard back (it was in Sept, I think) and she said, ā€œI got into School X! And they’re giving me $__ per year in scholarships! At least now if I don’t get in anywhere else, I’ll have somewhere to go!ā€

On the topic of financial aid, this year when submitting FAFSA w/D24, the SAI (student aid index aka EFC) amount was comical. Uncle Sam thinks that we can afford to pay ~$20k/yr more for college than what my take home pay is.

And I’m likeā€¦ā€œWhat?!ā€

That first acceptance is psychologically HUGE. My D22 applied EA to our state flagship – which is actually pretty hard to get into these days, and it’s many students’ first choice because our in-state merit scholarships are SO good.

She had absolutely zero interest in going there – it was sort of the opposite of everything she wanted, LOL (plus I’m an alum of the rival university, so she grew up hating this school) – but it was still a huge relief to know she could go somewhere!

That acceptance came mid-November, too, so she could breathe for a minute while she finished her other applications.
