Look at the “seminar” sessions – that’s the math one I’m talking about. It’s $99 for two hours. I don’t know how helpful my D26 found it, but it was the only paid test-prep she was willing to consider.
On the SuperTutorTV website under free resources are also “cheat sheets” on SAT math formulas. I printed those out for her – she at least looked through them and made sure she knew how to do everything.
But yeah, Desmos tips were the best help – apparently it’s much easier to graph a problem to get the answer than figuring it out the harder way, or at least it’s helpful to check your work, according to my D26.
(I have no idea – I crashed and burned in trig in 11th grade and have forgotten all math since, LOL.)
IF D26 elects to continue with athletic recruitment, she will need to apply ED to get coach admission support. She will apply EA to our state flagship regardless. If she isn’t ready to commit ED1, she’ll roll the dice and go RD and try to walk on.
Yes and her goal is to take it without science but now we can’t find a seat anywhere and may need to get on a plane to retake. And it is not clear if she retakes it without science, will her new superscore still include her old science scores or is there a way to have the new composite superscore only include the three other subjects that combine with her previous paper scores but leave science off completely…
My D26 doesn’t plan on ED’ing anywhere. It sounds like she will do one REA, a couple EA and maybe one or two RD
But of course that could change by the fall. She is currently frustrated that her school locks them out of the common app until Mid August she was hoping to start on a couple things over the summer that would not “ reset” when they reset it for the next school year
I think my D26 will be ED’ing to Holy Cross and ED2-ing to BC (a little bit of a reach). She also likes Fordham, but I think she will be fine RD’ing it there.
Course, we obviously have to run the financials for the EDs before committing to anything…
Fordham (unless it’s changed since D19’s day) has EA as well so you can do that while ED’ing elsewhere, and still get to hear early. If she gets into her ED school you just pull the Fordham application.
It sounds like it’s generally better to EA than RD, if schools have that option.
D26 will likely ED somewhere, mostly for financial reasons. Our budget of $25k/yr is tough - the only schools that are comfortably affordable for us are (1) highly selective unis/LACs that offer super-generous need-based aid, (2) in-state publics (albeit a slight stretch), and (3) OOS publics with very substantial merit. (There’s an outside chance of another category for strong Natl Merit awards, but her index of 218 is likely one point too low for Texas.)
She strongly prefers an LAC over the in-state/OOS larger public options, to the point that she isn’t even interested in applying to our two highly-regarded ginormous flagships. And I agree that LACs are a better fit for her. But if she’s going to get in to a Category 1 option, ED is probably a necessity - the chances in RD at all of those schools are so low that it’s likely she’d be shut out entirely. So she essentially has two shots, ED1 and ED2, and it will be a case of picking her favorites and crossing fingers. Right now I’d say that Colby and Wesleyan would be those two, but it’s early and things could change. St. Olaf and Trinity (TX) are also contenders, but they aren’t going to meet budget and thus would require some loans. If ED doesn’t work out, then we may refocus on those in RD and try to make it work with summer jobs, federal direct loans, side hustles for parents, and so forth.
I’m finding that even though my D26 will likely get national merit, we have yet to find a school that gives a substantial award for that in which she has any interest in attending. (I’m still hopeful, though!)
Despite being personally anti-Alabama (for truly no good reason) we visited over spring break for this very reason. S26 and husband were super impressed and I begrudgingly admitted it was pretty nice.
1470 SAT for S26. 800 verbal, 670 Math. Was a little surprised as he had flipped the other way for PSAT (perfect math, solid verbal).
Pretty confident he could improve via superscore if he retook it but he only needed a 1400 to get the highest instate lottery scholarship and is not applying to any T20s etc. We’ll leave it up to him but kinda think he might be one and done at this point which would be really nice.
We know a lot of kids that have chosen Bama for their fantastic scholarship! It’s really such a great deal. I know they recruit national merit kids the way they do athletes (okay, well, almost LOL). I know the dorms are great, etc. And it’s an easy drive for us.
Unfortunately, it’s just not a great fit for my D26. She’s not a kid that would thrive at a big SEC school (I went to UF, and we live close to UGA, so we’re pretty familiar).
For one thing, she wants to study a niche major, and they don’t have it at Alabama. And then, she wants to be in a small, chill marching band – but something like 700+ students audition for 400 spots in the Million Dollar Band, and that just doesn’t interest her. (She’s waiting to hear if she’ll be drum major in her high school band next year – which is all of 50 students, lol.)
So believe me, I wish we could pursue this – and if we really needed to make it work for financial reasons, then we would. But we’re lucky that we have a little flexibility in that regard, so I think she’ll likely end up at a school that is a better fit.

Hello all,
I had many, many help from CC community for my D22 and I am back here for D26’s journey. Although, I learned a great deal about college admission process while going through it for D22, I don’t think I am any better prepared for D26, and I will be really happy when we’re done with D26.
She’s been accpted to BU Rise Internship and UCSB RMP for this summer, and I’d like to get some comments from who have experienced these programs. She’s not a STEM kid and she will probbaly choose a major in Psychology/Art realted field.
I’ll try to play this game but it’s quite premature for S26…
(Schools he has seen and loved)
U Chicago
Boston University
University of Washington
NYU
(CA public schools he will apply to even though he would like to go out of state. Luckily CSUs don’t require essays and the UCs are a single app with many fees)

UCD
CSU Long Beach
SJSU
(Others floating around … not all will make the list.)
Carnegie Mellon
Case Western
Rochester Institute of Technology
University of Rochester

University of Colorado, Boulder
University of Vermont
(SLACs I like for him but we have to visit. Oberlin and Wesleyan have no supplemental essays, yay!)
I am impressed that so many of you have schools from both coasts on your lists, plus lots in between.
My D26 feels strongly that anything west of Texas is just too far away. I’m not quite sure how she came up with this – but I think that’s a hard line in her mind.
When we started looking, though, it was “no flights, and maximum six-hour drive.” So we’ve gotten past that barrier, at least!
