Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Right now we’re looking at S26 applying to:

For sure:
Clemson
Furman
Alabama

Likely:
UNC
NC State
U of SC

Maybe
Ohio State
Appalachian State

But D23 ended up at a school that wasn’t even on our radar at this point in the search process so who knows!

D19 went to NYU, so ask if you have any questions!

C26’s list:

Target (collegevine says safety but I’m not so sure these days): CU Boulder. Has a fairly unique program that interests them most and they loved the campus and town.

Reach: Cal Poly SLO (won’t get in as they are test blind and BArch is very competitive, and they don’t want to do a 5 year BArch anyway but …)

That’s it, lol. Although also thinking about USD, but it’s also test blind.

Mom is suggesting:

UIUC - reach
ASU -safety (auto admit)
UoA - safety or almost (higher GPA auto criteria than general for architecture)
UMN twin cities
Cal Poly Pomona (would be safety for second choice but architecture a reach, also see comment re BArch 5 year above). Commuter reputation a negative.
Considering UIC, probably safety but also seems to be largely a commuter school.

School college counselor also suggested, among others:
Pitt
A number of art/design schools - which I’m discouraging because if they decide to change majors during college it’s probably more likely to be towards physics than another design program.
Some colleges in red states, which are off the table.

C26’s profile is hard to assess as poor freshman year and early part of sophomore year has weighed on their grades, but current high GPA and 1500 SAT may help - where they use tests, so dinged at CA publics.

Will try EA everywhere that offers it, definitely for Boulder, UIUC and UMN. The Arizonas are rolling I believe. Possibly all subject to change if they decide they don’t want to do architecture after all after their summer program.

Totally different process than D19 who was focused on east coast/mid Atlantic privates ..

C26 was even more restrictive than that originally! Also why I think it’s wise to cast a wide net at this stage - kids change quite a lot at this age and even 6 months from now may be looking at very different options that they wouldn’t consider now.

This is D26 as well. There’s one exception on her list, but she doesn’t want to see or hear of any colleges further away so that she doesn’t make any more exceptions! We were visiting family in California over Christmas and she refused to look at any colleges there even to “just see what it’s like”.

Her only real criteria is non stop flight from home.

Throwing this out as something to consider regarding ED…my S23 ED’d it worked out and he was happy to be done. However, his friend ED’d to UChicago, was denied, got nervous and immediately ED2’d to another school & got in. While she was in the process of pulling her apps, she found out she was also accepted to our state flagship’s honors college with a full ride. She would’ve been very happy at our flagship, w/all the perks of the honors college & where her best friend was going, but at that point she was locked into her ED choice, which will cost her family over $250k for her undergrad. So if you choose ED, make sure you’re 100% on board with the price tag of your choice!

Not just with the price tag, but that you’re not going to have any “what if” thoughts about somewhere else… need to be absolutely sure it’s your top choice.

Same!!! My daughter has no interest in Alabama or Tulsa. USC has a decent national merit scholarship, and that might end up in our list.

Just returning home from college fair. D26 did a great job chatting up the admissions officers from a few schools. Spent a long time at the University of Rochester, Pitt and Drexel tables. Glad she found some target/likely schools that seem to interest her!

DH and I met in a college summer internship where we were both staying in an NYU dorm – the one at 3rd Ave and 11th St. We then kinda dated long distance and agreed to move back to the city after graduation (from different schools) to see what would happen. Been together since (and lived in the city for six years before leaving altogether).

D22 fancies herself a New Yorker because she’s been so many times to see shows – but NYU’s campus was too urban for her, go figure.

Toured Embry Riddle today with The Child.

D26’s tentative list so far, along with what major(s) she’s likely to apply for:

  • University of Arizona - rolling admissions. Will apply for honors college by priority date. Majors: Cyber Operations; Intelligence & Information Operations.
  • University of Tulsa - will apply by EA deadline for merit scholarship consideration. Major: Cybersecurity. Also interested in minors in law or history.
  • UT-San Antonio - rolling admissions. Major: Cyber Intelligence.
  • UAH (Univ of Alabama-Huntsville) - rolling admissions, but would apply by priority date for merit scholarship consideration. Major: Information Systems BSBA (cybersecurity concentration).
  • Texas Tech (maybe) - rolling admissions, but would apply by priority date for merit scholarship consideration. Major: Information Technology (cybersecurity emphasis)

Considered but ruled out:

  • Embry Riddle Prescott - Majors: Cyber Intelligence & Security; Global Security & Intelligence Studies. Minor: Diplomatic & US Military History
  • Univ of North Texas - Major: Cybersecurity
  • UT-Dallas - Major: Computer Info Systems & Technology. Minor: Cybersecurity. Ruled out because of cost & D26 really wants to work in gov’t sector if possible…other colleges on D26’s list have better internship & job connections in that sector than UTD does.
  • some schools recommended by college counselor at school: Univ of Utah, couple of colleges in Florida (too far away), University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA.
  • UNM or NMSU in New Mexico - which is a bummer because these would be cheaper to attend than anything in state in AZ
  • NM Tech in Socorro, NM - because of requirement to take a year of engineering physics & calculus even if you’re a cybersecurity type of major.
  • any other WUE school where it’s “cold.”
  • ASU - too close to home. Major she’d want is in West Campus, which is in Glendale (yuck).
  • NAU - too cold. Today (April 18th), it was snowing in the afternoon in Flagstaff.

others we researched but ruled out:

  • Univ of Houston - too sweaty. ironic since where we live, it reaches 110-115 some times in the summer.
  • Southwestern - doesn’t have right major + too expensive
  • Univ of Oklahoma - has a cybersecurity major but it’s actually in Tulsa and Univ of OK doesn’t have any housing at that location. Plus, even if you land a killer merit scholarship, the scholarship doesn’t cover any of the $9k of “fees” that are on top of tuition.
  • anything in CA
  • Creighton University - because of requirement to take a religion class
  • GCU - because of religion class requirement + too socially conservative. D26 doesn’t agree w/their requirement to have your bedroom door all the way open if you have a member of the opposite sex/gender in your room. Violations result in disciplinary action, which can include expulsion.
  • Univ of Alabama - too much football & Greek life culture. Total antithesis of how D26 is wired.
  • Ole Miss - might be affordable, but ruled out for same reasons as Univ of Alabama. Culture of the school does not align with her values.
  • Trinity Univ - too expensive. Not worth applying when we already know that even if she got in, we couldn’t afford to pay for it.
  • other TX schools like Baylor, SMU, TCU - too expensive. Plus a little too much rah rah football & frat/sorority culture. Not looking to debate the topic. That’s just how my kid feels about it.

So this list may change after next week as D26 is making some college visits. She wants BSN and has a mix of direct admit and pre-nursing programs- but so far the list includes:

Auburn- Her dream school right now
Clemson- visited two years ago but needs her own tour
U South Carolina- liked a lot
U Tennessee Knoxville- has not seen yet
U Kentucky- has not seen yet
Ole Miss- has not seen yet
U Delaware- My recommendation has not seen yet
Elon- loves but worried she will be bored
James Madison- seeing next week
UVA- seeing next week but won’t get in- hoping she takes off her list
TCU- seeing next week
UT Austin- see UVA comments
TAMU- no idea why she added this- way too big and isn’t visiting
U Arkansas- hasn’t seen- will likely come off the list

I am guessing she will remove UT Austin and UVA since they are so impossible to get in, even more so for OOS and even more so for BSN programs. If Auburn works out that she is admitted in their first EA round, she would know by 10/15 and likely be done with the application process. She would need to have her applications that are due by 10/15 ready to submit that night if she gets deferred by Auburn. I would really like to get her to Ole Miss, Kentucky and Tennessee this summer but not sure we will be able to swing it. I just really want her to have other schools she likes besides Auburn so she isn’t so invested in only one school.

A classmate of mine who has served on several of the various Committees and Boards at UNC over the last 25 years was on Campus last weekend for various meetings including interviewing the finalists for their most prestigious scholarships.

The information provided to them by reliable sources in admissions and administrations is they’re expecting the OOS admissions rate to drop below 7.5% when everything’s tallied up for the current year cycle. They were also told of plans to expand enrollment but that it won’t likely happen for another couple years…which doesn’t help my daughter.

On the plus side, my son just received his ‘official notice’ of transfer status to UNC and can now go about sign-up for university housing options… :joy: so he’ll probably have to look at private housing and/or wait to see who’s roommates drop out or decide to go abroad this year try to back out on their leases…

So much competition.

FYI, UNM has a direct admit nursing program. And their OOS merit scholarships are pretty great.

hi! I don’t now what schools she is considering, but I did read just this morning that giving Science is becoming optional in September, UGA will not be considering this score in the admissions process. that’s our state flagship and they are super transparent about admissions criteria. I wonder if other schools will do the same? It may be worth looking into as she narrows down her list. It sounds like without science her score is favorable.

Been debating posting this, but it’s been a rough week for our high school district. 3 of the 4 schools lost students, one to basically a freak accident and each of the others suicides. I don’t know the details of the latter two but given the time of year it’s difficult not to think it’s related to college admissions stress. Please stress to your children that their happiness is more important than grades or which college they get into..

if she loved Auburn she should tour Ole Miss. Not on my D26’s list but I think they are similar in campus vibe. A friend’s daughter is there on a STAMP scholarship. She is in a sorority but she definitely is not the “consumed by football and Greek life” type of person and she LOVES it. You never know… We all thought we would hate Auburn and we toured and loved it as well. It made it’s way onto her list (we were all surprised) . but such a great place. I hope your daughter gets in!
