Yay, congrats!! The first one is huge. (I am also dying to know where but understand if you don’t want to share, lol.)
The first school my D26 will likely hear from is the reachiest one on her list, the one where local kids are desperate to get in, but which she’s not that excited about.
There’s an overwhelming probability that she’ll be deferred – they accept very few in the early in-state round – but she said the other day, “Wouldn’t it be an awesome flex if I got into Tech early and then just didn’t go there?”
(Don’t worry, she knows not to share or post on socials – her school makes it very clear how to be sensitive to classmates during college app season.)
Ole Miss is one of S26’s top two. He hasn’t applied yet but I know he will get in. Affordability is the issue for us (OOS). Let’s hope tomorrow’s ACT will solve that problem
“sure thing keep in the back pocket rolling admit” - exactly what C26’s first admit was, and they were much more excited about it than I expected It does feel good to know that you’re going “somewhere” regardless of what happens from here on out.
Yes, one of her best friends is headed to Ole Miss. It’s the only school she wanted to go to. She has amazing stats also so she knew she would get in and she’s going to get a lot of money from them. She’s already paid her deposit and knows she’s going there and is going to have an stress-free senior year. I wish my daughter was in the same boat, but she’s hung up on a different school that is a reach for her because of her stupid ACT score.
That is a legit and valid strategy to slightly undershoot in order to get more merit money. My kid is inadvertently doing that because she’s aiming for a niche major, and she also knows that she doesn’t want to be at too rigorous a school, despite her stats.
It’s all good – these kids will hopefully all land where they’re meant to be.
Congrats to your kiddo! Fantastic to have one in the back pocket!
More merit, honors offers, and other special programs… there can be lots of benefits for kids who pick a more likely school. It can be a smart choice! And there are plenty of other kids thinking along these lines, so kids can expect to find others like them there, too.
DD found out that she scored a 1460 on her SAT. She is finally done with this awful test! So excited because she scored above 700 in math, which should help with Engineering acceptances and her score should be sufficient to validate her likely National Merit Semifinal status. Previous score would have missed validating by 1 point. We are all on cloud 9.
