Parents of the HS Class of 2026

It’s a lesson in resilience if nothing else!

Evangeline2026:

I’m so sorry :frowning: That completely stinks and I hope she ends up finding something fun out of it. Otherwise I wish she could just quit without it being worse!

She tries to have a positive attitude while she’s there but I know how sad it all makes her. She used to love volleyball so much.

Our school has a very “manual” system; we do not use any software. For each college/university we have to fill out a “blue form” and then either email or hand deliver them to guidance. It has to be signed by student and parent. I made a template with both of our signatures that I can fill in the school specific info and then email over. It cuts down a little on the process!

Mine has applied to 4 schools already, and has 10 on her “to do” list. However, she may cull that list down as time goes on. I expect she will apply to at least 12, partly because she is applying to a competitive and impacted major.

As far as I know, she has not done any of her supplemental essays yet. And most of the remaining schools on her list have at least one supplemental essay.

My kiddo is at 10 schools.

ED to top choice. plan is to EA everywhere else except one that doesn’t offer EA. We’ll see how the timing plays out, she may have to move to RD if essays don’t get done in time!

14 here - 3 reaches, 8 targets, and 3 safeties - hoping some early acceptances will wean that list down to 10-12 which was the initial goal. If not, that is ok. Most do not have supplementals, thankfully.

Aaaargh. Just seen C26’s reach has updated their website from “recommended” to “minimum required” for architecture, and they are one year short for one of subject areas. However, they are exceeding on all the others and the essays for that school are basically done, so I’m thinking they should just go for it anyway?? So freaking annoying. They probably updated it on 1 September when the school’s app opened.

That is super annoying. Is there any other class that they could spin as possibly being in that subject area?

Unfortunately not. But they are 1-2 years extra in the others and their SAT is at the 75th percentile. If they hadn’t started the essays I’d probably give it up but they are basically done and, I think, done well. I just had a chat to them and it’s a downer but they still want to take a chance and apply. Very frustrating though especially with such a small list of schools.

Submitted my Bama application! Does anyone who’s applied know when I should receive the email to set up my portal?

2 likely (of which one is in state flagship that others dream of attending so to say it’s a likely is crazy)

1 target

5 reaches - 2 of which are HIGH reaches - but also double legacy / ED at 1 so :folded_hands:

she really likes her “likely” school and says she’d be ok attending so here we are. she’s submitted 4, will submit the 5th tomorrow and be hopefully finished by mid-October.

My D26’s ED school uses Glimpse. She is starting to plan it out. I know that school does value it. We were told it’s more about them being themselves, unscripted. per an admissions rep, they really use them to get to know the kids better so they’d rather see them authentic, not reading off a paper etc. Show they put time and thought into it, but not super polished perfection like those YouTube videos some schools use.

I don’t know about Bama specifically, but last year my son heard anywhere from one day later two two weeks later. Make sure you check your spam/junk folder, because some of the emails he received ended up there. If it gets past 7-10 days and you haven’t heard you might want to email an admissions rep just to check in.

This was 2 years ago, but my kid applied and got an email within 24 hours to set up portal and was accepted three days after that! It was very unexpected and fast. He had friends who waited WEEKS to hear anything.

D26 came home from practice last night with a hand injury. I am trying not to lose my mind right now. She is having it x-rayed at 4:30 pm. This will be a devastating blow if it messes up her final season. I keep reminding myself she broke a finger and was in a cast for three weeks in 8th grade and jumped right back in when the cast came off. Hopefully this is similar. But this is also a different injury and it is her entire left palm that hurts. Anyway, please send us good juju.

Since others have broke down the lists by type, D26s current 14 schools are: 2 Reach; 4 target; 4 likelies; 4 very likelies. Her top three choices, which she rates evenly are a reach, a target, and a very likely that she is applying to EA. Thus, I expect the list to shrink assuming she gets into the very likely by mid December.

That is so great that one of her top three is a very likely. It takes a lot of the pressure off (hopefully).

We have a manual “blue form” too, despite using SCOIR which is tied to the Common App somehow. How funny! Our kids can’t even email it – they have to get the paper form, fill it out and staple the printed-out proof of submission, and then turn the thing into the college advising office. The form is minimal – school, name of major, what department/college the major is in, whether test scores were submitted and whether the student ordered an official test score to be sent. (No idea if the college counselor looks up each school to see how many rec letters to send? D26 has three on file, but not all schools accept that many in addition to the one from the counselor.) The students have to sign it, but the parents don’t.

There are only 118 kids in D26’s senior class and four college advisors, so I guess it’s the easiest way for them to keep track?

Ours doesn’t have major and doesn’t require a proof of submission. It asks name of college, type of admission (EA, RD) and the deadline, whether test scores should be included, what type of application (school vs common app), and whether letters of recommendation are needed.

I think it’s interesting that they require parent signature. Why should the parent have to approve where a student applies to, especially considering so many of them are 18 when they submit.

C26 is still 16!!! They are young for the year (because, reasons) but still a lot of people in their class are not 18 yet. Not sure if it’s standard across the US but the age cut off date in CA is September 1 so many will only be 18 later in the school year.

That aside, I don’t see need for parent to sign anything other than an ED agreement?

D26 is considering:

3 reaches

1 match

1 likely

1 lock

…but I think she is leaning toward ED1 at the likely, so the rest may not matter. It’s more affordable than the reaches and seems to be a perfect fit for her. D22 went all-RD and sweated out acceptances into April, so it would be nice to be done in December for a change!

Wow! In our area, a lot of parents choose to wait until their children are 6 to start kindergarten. D26 has several friends that have either already turned 18 and will be 19 when they graduate or have fall/winter birthdays.
