Parents of the HS Class of 2026

This is correct. All of the schools she is applying to know her school well, as do all of the super selective colleges that she is not applying to.

D26 is submitting scores at the direction of the coach who is recruiting her. She has provided her test scores for all the academic pre reads she’s submitted as part of the recruiting process. Her scores put her in the 25-75% range of all schools she was considering, so figured for some schools it would help, for others, it wouldn’t hurt.

D26 submitted a transcript request to her counselor and he uploaded it into the Common App. Her LORs were requested through Naviance. Last check, everything in her ED1 application was complete per the university’s applicant portal.

It is listed on the profile for D26s school. It is also my understanding that in general colleges look at the typical scores for the school as something they factor into context when relevant. I’ve heard that on the Dartmouth admission dean’s podcast, on the Your College Bound Kid podcast, and I believe in Jeff Selingo’s book too. If your kid’s score is 300 points higher than the average, I think that should help her on the evaluation of the strength of her scores, but I’m no expert on how that works.

I’m hoping she is one app and done with the school recruiting her and you all can just celebrate and relax from there.

S26’s SAT score is much stronger than his GPA. We are in CA, and he so wishes UCs and CSUs were not test blind LOL. But sadly, with his grades and GPA he doesn’t stand much chance with the UCs, which is where he would love to go. So we are focusing on CSUs and OOS colleges.

Our public high school does not list SAT score on the school profile. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that our state schools are test blind.

Can you dm meet the info of your trip too? I have been trying to research a good family trip to the Galapagos. Thanks.

We will be empty nesters as well. That is unless D22 returns home. There would be job opportunities for her here but she really doesn’t want that and I don’t want it for her either  (while I’d love to have her back in our house, I’m not a fan of our area, so I hope she finds something else in a better place to live) I’m kind of dreading the empty nest. We’ve been one of those families pretty wrapped up in our kids’ sports and I have really enjoyed that. I’m starting to think about alternative ways to spend my weekends. Husband will be happy couch potatoing and video gaming but that’s not my thing.

We have always travelled a lot and have frequently taken kids out of school for it too. It will be odd doing it without them but that’s definitely in our plans. I think we will start with longer cruises, as we both enjoy those.

S26 has submitted/will submit scores for the public schools he is applying to, as it is mandatory in most Southern states and merit money is based on scores. He will go TO for his reach. While his ACT is above average for his HS, it is on the low end for his reach. He will have to ask for it to be taken off his transcript though, as ACT scores are listed on ours.

@SJ2727 I will take that Galapagos info per DM as well please  As we will have a double graduation year next year, we want to do a special family trip and that would definitely fit the bill

I think it might have more to do with school culture and the priorities and values that the HS is trying to project in its profile.

Our CA public HS also does not list SAT scores on its profile, and also does not list GPA distribution, or other numeric info that could be used to rank students (the school also does not rank). The profile leads with prominent information about the diversity of the student body, wide range of activities and clubs, etc.

But I see lots and lots of GPA / SAT / ACT score distribution data listed prominently on the profiles of other schools like Monta Vista, Paly, Lynbrook.

We are! Tbh, I don’t know yet if I will be thrilled or not. High school marching band and concert band keep me and my husband very busy on the weekends and some weeknights! It’ll be an adjustment for us for sure when we’re sitting on our couch with nothing to do all of a sudden on Friday nights and Saturdays!

@ECCA2026
S26 is applying with test scores to our state schools, a few OOS schools, and test-optional to 2 private schools - his reaches. His SAT score is 400 points higher than his school’s SAT average (published on his school profile). He has received mixed feedback on whether to submit to his reach schools given the context of his school’s SAT average. He’s leaning more towards not submitting though.

I’m submitting my scores because they are strong however most of my friends are going TO!

Our school transcript doesn’t list anything other than classes taken and grade received! profile also provides nothing beyond available courses and 5 year history of matriculations. No gpa, no class rank, nothing about test scores. Zip, zilch, nada, nothing.

Harkening back to an earlier conversation folks were having on this thread, I had my first chance to respond to reactions about D26 being super excited about a school hardly anybody has heard of here in CA.

I was at an event and folks were asking about D26 and college as they are inclined to do when they figure out your kid is a senior. I mentioned the cities where the schools she is most interested are first. When I said Atlanta was one of the cities folks wanted to know which school (pretty sure they were expecting me to say Emory or Georgia Tech). I said something like ā€œIt’s a small women’s college named Agnes Scottā€ to unsurprising blank stares and the totally expected ā€œI’ve never heard of itā€ from someone.

I actually surprised myself by jumping in without missing a beat and saying ā€œWe hadn’t heard of it either until my daughter’s college counselor recommended it this spring based on her interests. We researched it, visited this summer, and all loved it. It is a perfect fit for what she likes, and we’re grateful to her counselor for recommending it.ā€

I then went on to say how all students there go on a study abroad trip with a class freshman year, that is part of the curriculum for all students. I then told them how all sophomores do a short internship as part of the curriculum as well, and how much we love that study abroad and career exploration are integrated into their core. I mentioned how it has roughly 40% white students, 34% or so black students and 15% Latino students and has way more socioeconomic diversity than any other liberal arts college we’ve looked at.

By the end of my little spiel they were all like, that place sounds incredible. One said they wished their college had had everyone go abroad. Another chimed in about how valuable it is to get kids on the path of finding and trying internships. A parent of a sophomore said this is a great model and asked what schools in CA do something similar. I told her I didn’t know of any, this is the only school like this I have heard of.

A little while later, one of the folks came up to me and said they looked up the school website and are sending the info to their sister for their niece!

Apparently I am an Agnes Scott booster now! I should get a commission if their Northern California application numbers go up. In all seriousness though, taking that ā€œnever heard of itā€ and genuinely telling them all the reasons we like the school made me appreciate how excited I am for it as an option for D26. Her application due Nov 15, and then we wait.

That does make sense! Our school also lists similar data, including graduation rate and demographics.

Our school has not updated the school profile yet for this year- they better get a move on since October 15 deadline is a few days away and that profile needs to accompany the transcripts and teacher recommendations.

I would look closely at the Common Data Sets. D26’s ED1 school is test optional, but has categorized standardized test scores as ā€œImportantā€ and ā€œVery Importantā€ in the few years it’s been test optional. To me, it seems like it’s sending mixed messages, but only the AO’s will truly know.

We will be semi-empty nesters since S23 is living at home and will most likely not be moving out any time soon. But it will actually be helpful for us because he can watch the dog while my husband and I travel. We want to go back to Jamaica next fall and I would love to take him to Scotland. I absolutely adored it there but he has never been.

D26 is not submitting her test score. She only took the SAT once and did not do well. Since her top choice is test blind (even for merit) it didn’t seem to make sense to stress her out to try and improve her score by at least 200 points.
