Parents of the HS Class of 2026

My D26 is applying Brown ED too. Wishing your daughter all the best on Brown!

You too. It’ll be a tough cycle.

Haaaaa! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Four things –

  1. When D22 got admitted to Rice, my D26 insisted we eat rice for dinner that night.
  2. We know a kid that graduated from Curry College, so we’ve long joked that one of our younger kids should land there.
  3. One of my favorite things at Rice is the ā€œArrozā€ shirt that the Hispanic Association sells because no one gets it.
  4. Brown is the only school that my Rice student was outright rejected from (wait listed at a few others). :slightly_smiling_face: She applied RD, though.

I posted more today than in weeks.

This is what happens when you decide to have Dr Pepper in the morning when you never drink any caffeine.

allstar (comp ) cheer is year-round - they get a 10 day break in May. I don’t think she knows anything different as this has been her life for nearly 14 years. The break will come after her IB essay is complete. All these kids are so busy. I don’t know how they do it!

Or even no supplemental essays. UVA, Univ of Delaware, Univ of Washington.

That’s my kid at Cal! And btw, all his roommates are out of state

Discussions about 80k-90k per year undergrad degree and whether they are worth it or not depend more on someone’s finances than anything else imo.

For us, no school is worth paying 80K a year for undergrad, but that’s simply because we can’t afford to pay that much without taking hefty loans, so no, not worth it for us. On the other hand, if someone could cash flow that much tuition then any school that’s a good fit for their kid is worth the cost. What I am trying to say is that even discussing the worth of 80k tuition is a financial privilege and not everyone has that.

For F&M, it was the second column on the portal. Very easy to spot. It had her listed as Undecided for the primary major and then the major that she was actually interested in for the second major. She updated both majors.

I posted over in the Pitt thread, but D26 was accepted tonight! Woohoo! First acceptance! It was funny, we had just sat down to dinner when I asked her if she’d checked (emails have been coming between 7 and 7:30pm) – so then our food got cold while I recorded her checking the portal, LOL.

YAY! She’s actually very interested in the major, so now we have to visit.

Mine gave up All Star after 8th grade to do Varsity in High School. I definitely do not miss the crazy travel and my wallet does not miss it at all  Thankfully a lot of us moms have remained close and they all cheer together at the high school.

That is fantastic.

We have gotten a few small things as ā€˜joke’ gifts to give to D26 when (if!?) she gets into her top 3 choices.

~Guiness 0 Proof for University of limerick
~Lego’s new mineral set for Colorado School of Mines
~TBD for RIT (hoping to find inspiration during our upcoming visit)

Will your kids want to cheer in college? Is there competitive cheer at the college level?

Mine is having that dilemma about marching band – ā€œband kidā€ has been her identity for so long that she can’t imagine not being part of it if she chooses a school with a marching band.

And yet, it’s such a time commitment, and she has a hundred other interests she’d like to pursue. I’m curious if it will lead her to choose a school with just a pep band if she decides marching is too much.

Haha, love this so much! I had to go look up the mineral set – so cool. All of my kids have always loved Legos. Our entire playroom still has so many Lego models displayed. No idea what we’re going to do with them, lol, and yet I still buy Legos for Christmas.

RIT is known as ā€œbrick cityā€ – so maybe something with that. Or they’re the Tigers, so maybe some vintage Tony the Tiger merch! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’ll throw this out for kids who love Legos- as a graduation present, we got D23 a custom Lego mosaic w/his university logo on it. Definitely a top gift that year, it’s hanging up in his dorm. I think we used Memobrick, but there are several websites where you upload your image and they send you the pieces to build the mosaic.

Oh that’s so fun – thanks for mentioning! I’ll look it up! My D26 would definitely love this.

Our update -

Marching band ends on Monday. There are a few random things throughout the year they perform at, like parades. But otherwise, Monday is it.

Jazz band goes on. They practice before school, so he gets in at 6:30am every day. I’m super impressed he has done this for all 4 years of high school! On nights with other practices, it makes for very long days.

He is working on a couple essays for scholarships and the honors college now. It’s nice, but weird, to have the college search be done. He’s happy with his choice, so that’s it. My older 2 didn’t decide until April, so this is very odd!

We have yet to do senior photos. We have a day scheduled in a couple weeks. Crossing our fingers for a nice weather day. I wish I had been on top of this in the summer!

Graduation stuff has been ordered. AP/IB tests have been paid for. Ouch!

Ah. Yes not all as easy as Rice haha! I got the British chocolate ā€œviolet (crumble)ā€ for D19 /NYU. I’m too superstitious to buy swag in advance

For those of us outside this universe - what is the difference in marching band vs pep band?

Not disagreeing with you. Bates was free though!

And honestly - after much thought - my daughter didn’t want to ED anywhere because we need monetary support. She was afraid she might miss out on a school that might offer her more money vs an ED school. And also concerned that what an ED school thought was affordable or meets need is not truly affordable for us.

I DO understand why NEU, Tulane, Bates, Middlebury etc. fill most of their class with ED kids. I mean who doesn’t want to take a kid who REALLY wants to go there? But for those who need financial support - it’s a much bigger risk.
