Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Back then for us, a thick envelope meant you were accepted, a thin letter meant you were rejected.

I only applied to one school so Im glad it worked out. CC would have a heart attack if someone did that today.

C26 would have been quite happy to do that!!! I made them find some more options.

This was one reason that a few really awesome schools were not even considered by D26. She wants to just focus on school/life- not what she has to do to for the next steps and/or stress over grades.

S20 did not get direct into CU Boulder- got exploratory studies instead- that made that a hard no for him also.

My D26 is still sitting at just her one ED1 application. I’m trying really hard not to nag.

YAY! Congrats!! I love all the Pitt love on this thread. So they are accepted directly into architecture? That’s a fantastic option for their list!

That’s the date I was hoping to take D26, but man, it is crazy expensive to fly that weekend. I really hope we can figure something out.

Congrats! How awesome!!

We are flying in Sunday night and back home Monday night because she has cheer practice on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday that week and the first competition the next weekend. It’s not cheap, but we have a bunch of points we’re going to use for it. It’s really the only time we can make work for the next like 4 months so we had to do what we had to do.

Something tells me that the counselors at our high school are ready for 11/1 to come and go already. Earlier today, they sent out an email to all seniors’ parents with some requests & advice (I’m paraphrasing a lot below):

  1. Your kids are procrastinating. If they’re applying to colleges’ ED or EA 11/1 deadline, would you please ask them to hurry up and hit the submit button?
  2. There’s no grace period. No flexibility. Colleges won’t accept a late submission. Get it done. Period. Hurry up.
  3. We do NOT recommend that your kid add a new college to their list at this point in the game. They’ll rush the essay(s), they might miss the deadline, and might miss important details.
  4. HURRY UP and have your kids apply by 10/30! For the love of all that is holy, JUST DO IT. The Common App portal will slow down, have time outs and other technical issues on 10/31 and 11/1. You could MISS THE DEADLINE BECAUSE OF THIS!
  5. Don’t ask us at 11:30 pm on Saturday 11/1 to review your kid’s essay one last time. They’ve been working on essays since August. It’s been almost 3 months. Just do it. Please. Before we all get more gray hair.

After all the talk earlier about Ralphie, I was telling D22 about it – because Boulder has an excellent master’s program for her, but it’s mentally pretty far west of where she has been considering. (“Mountain time is not a real thing that exists, Mother.”) (She’s kidding, in case that’s not clear, lol.)

I don’t think she’s ever been to Colorado? Well, wait, we did a family trip almost a decade ago to national parks out west, and we took a picture at Four Corners. So she’s had a foot or hand in the state. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Anyway, now she’s looking at the program, lol!

I’m a big fan of posting everywhere, but especially your kid’s chance me/match me threads, because posters get emotionally invested in the the kids and are curious to know what schools the kid ended up applying to, how the results came out, and where the kid decides to go. Updates to those threads are also super helpful for families down the line who have a kid with similar interests/situations and want to see the outcomes, too.

Yes, the admission letter says “intended major architecture”.

I’ll wait for your review. We can’t make it to Pitt before next year. I hope they add more admitted days for next year.

Because we’ve been so uncertain about how C26’s application would stack up and because there weren’t a lot of options that fit the various criteria on their list, it was mainly there so that there would be more options. I think most architecture courses require a certain minimum grade to stay in the major so that’s just something they’ll have to deal with. (D19 also had to maintain a certain minimum in her major at NYU too, so maybe this is more widespread anyway?)

I wonder if the attitude towards exploratory at Boulder has changed a bit since your S20. It seems to be something they use both as a place to put students whose grades were maybe not as competitive, but also a place to put high stats kids who might not end up enrolling there. It seems to me that over the past couple of cycles I’ve seen (on Reddit etc) students more amenable to enrolling in PES because they know they can easily transfer to their preferred major (usually engineering but sometimes business) pretty easily, whereas before there seemed to be more who would rather go somewhere with a direct admit into what they wanted. But they are still putting off some students who might have otherwise enrolled, for sure.

If she’s athletic enough she can apply to be a Ralphie handler too

We are a “run only if pursued by werewolves” sort of family, lol.

Thanks
I guess I’m not as old as some of you might have thought after my Western Union quip (I’m not the Tony Randall of Dads).

I think the telegram and sign for hand delivery from UMich probably had to do with the acceptance off the Wait List aspect. It was already early May when I received it, and USPS mail could take a while, especially if it was mail to me, give some time to respond, and mail back. I’m guessing they need quick turn around so they could either mark the seat as filled -or- move onto the next wait list candidate. I’m sure there is some kind of diminishing return as the timeline gets closer and closer to the date students planning their college departure. Although in Veterinary School we did have a couple of students join our class five days into the semester when others who had accepted did not show up on day one.

I think the CollegeVine is incorrect with respect to its Pitt chancing, as CV requires a student’s unweighted GPA but Pitt is one of the few schools that uses weighted GPAs.

One time a few years ago at work, a coworker suggested that as a fun team building activity, we all do a ‘fun run’ together. I said, “No thanks. I’m allergic.” Coworker didn’t quite understand, but others in our department got it. LOL. So I clarified and said, “
to running. I’m allergic to running.” :joy:

D26 has one more app to go. Applied to a lot of schools - trying to find a financial fit out of state if our state flagship, where she really wants to go, doesn’t work out (it’s a reach for her). We have some other state schools that would be financial fits, but they aren’t a perfect fit for her otherwise (at least she doesn’t think so). This is such a stressful process right now, the waiting! I am trying my very best to exude easy-breezy when in reality my stomach is ill

I also realize that just because the school isn’t a “perfect” fit for her, doesn’t mean it won’t end up being an awesome school. I looked at transferring after my first semester, even visited a school. Ultimately decided not to an absolutely had the best time the rest of college. I do truly believe that it’s what they do at college, not where they go. I also believe that finding the right place where they at least feel comfortable and can be themselves, is a big part of then finding the confidence to be highly successful there otherwise. So I am trying to balance my mind around all of that.

Just putting it out here in case anyone else feeling similar.
