Know how you feel.
D26 applied ED to Brown but I wouldve preferred her to ED to Rice. But she’s taking her shot so we’re supporting her.

Maclaren Volo. I will die on that hill, lol. I had one in hot pink and one in black. And these were early models before they had rain hoods. (Apparently they were eventually recalled because children were getting tips of fingers caught and sliced off? Ack. But mine were from years before that.)
Well, that’s it for volleyball. The team lost in 4 sets (the last one was a heartbreaker, 27-25). D26 was more sad than I expected- I thought she’d be relieved- but it was such a bummer of a senior season for her. She’s played since she was 7 and it’s hard for her to grasp that this is it. I reminded her that she could play intramural in college, but it’s not the same.
We are up in the air about the optional interview at Quinnipiac. They offer a formal one where they ask the student questions and then they have a “meeting” where the student asks the questions. Part of me thinks she should do the informal one, where she could make a good impression without the pressure, But on the other hand, it would be a good opportunity for her to explain her disaster of a sophomore year and highlight the intangibles that don’t come through on her transcript or activities list.
D26 is happy with her application list; her big issue is going to be making the final choice if she gets accepted to each of her top three. She is already freaking out about making the wrong decision.
I haven’t found a bus or something that goes. I think the vast majority of students live within driving distance. Her 3 suitemates are from Alabama or Tennessee and most of the students she knows are from those 2 states. One friend is from Illinois and one from California. My guess is there isn’t a demand for a bus to Nashville. She could likely find someone she knows driving that way, but the timing could be tough. She is able to find a friend to drop her at the Huntsville airport though, so that’s good. It’s only 15 minutes from campus. She used Uber to get back last year and that was easy and cheap too.
I’m not trying to change her mind, but both of the econ have a CLEP that is accepted at UAH. My daughter is going to study for it this summer to get that gen ed out of the way. She did the chemistry this past summer and earned 8 credits that covered her chemistry 1 and science elective requirements.
A bigger airport being almost 2 hr away is definitely a negative. We cannot afford for her to have car for the 1st 2 yr of college and there isn’t any wiggle room on that at all. If the Nashville airport were only an hour away, then it would make it a serious consideration.
My D26 did one optional interview which she thinks went well. She decided not to dress up for it, but she looked super cute and herself. Another applicant was interviewing at the same time and she looked very preppy, so I’m just hoping that my kid’s decision doesn’t hurt her chances.
My D26 told me this week that, if she doesn’t get into one of her top three schools (she’s applying to 11), she’s seriously thinking of taking a gap year.
A number of hers offer them -but she has so much going on right now - it’s hard to know where to put the focus. She has a few more next week but I just don’t think we can do one for everyone that offers. (Caveat - she is applying to 20 schools -so it’s a lot. Chasing funding is not a lot of fun.) I do think it’s a good idea -she’s getting some additional ‘impressions’ from each of the schools of the vibe.
Ok, I’ll play. We had a Maclaren umbrella stroller (don’t remember the model) and a BOB jogger. Loved the combo, I swore by the Bob in our walkable neighborhood and the Maclaren when going somewhere by car or traveling. Memories of so many naps in the BOB while I talked to friends and family on the bike/walking path.
I think it’s just an overwhelming process – hopefully the Pitt visit will go well on her second visit, and she will have at least one where she can see herself at.
Some of them have really sneaky dates. I went and checked ALL the RDs and we have to get one in by 11/15 and not 1/3 for the best scholarship opportunities!
ugh.
I made the mistake of opening the pdf of one of my kids ALREADY SUBMITTED apps and what do I see? A dumb typo🤦🏼♀️
She wrote: “instead of osimply opening”.
Like a leprechaun is speaking or something. Darn it.
Mine wore a sweater - it’s cold here. If that is the deciding factor -she probably doesn’t want to go to that school. (At least that’s how I view it!)
In general, I kind of feel like if they don’t like her interview -the school isn’t a great match. She’s very endearing and also kind of intense. I told her I think that’s wonderful and if anyone ever thinks she’s “too much” –well they aren’t enough for her
Dates, colleges, work, life - it all applies.
20 interviews in a month or two would even wear a seasoned adult out!
We decided my kid would not interview at all of hers either. I think 11 or 12 offered them and we let her cut it to 6. We went with the schools she was most interested in and one where it would cover demonstrated interest since she didn’t visit (for that one we thought it might also up merit chances and reduce risk of a yield protect rejection). Two she’s interviewing for she’s almost a sure thing to get in and they offer merit. It was tough deciding which ones to skip, but we decided it was too much to do them all on top of everything else.
Be happy, if there is a dumb typo it looks less like it was created by AI ![]()
I don’t think most schools care what they wear for the interviews so long as it’s nothing offensive or totally inappropriate. Normal clothes they wear day to day should be fine. I wouldn’t add that to your list of worries.
My kid has just wore what she wears for every one and I think that is perfect.
True, silver lining. I guess?! ![]()
For her interview, D26 didn’t listen to her mom
and wore her favorite ‘History Nerd’ t-shirt and a Star Wars zip-up sweatshirt over it. That is totally her, though. ![]()
fwiw, I have the same sweatshirt.
Artwork on it was designed by this Hopi Native American artist who’s done all of this cool artwork that’s a sort of crossover between Hopi designs & Star Wars. I have a couple of his prints hanging up in our house. A few years ago, he collaborated w/a mechanical engineer to create a Hopi R2D2. Like an actual R2D2 that moves around and makes all the R2D2 sounds and everything. It’s really cool. He also has painted several murals at different behavioral health & drug/alcohol rehab facilities in northern Arizona.
(ok enough down the rabbit hole of a favorite artist
)
OMG SAME!! I had TWO Volos! Lord.
