Case is one where I look at the website every month to see if they’ve added any majors – because I have a gut feeling that my D26 would love it there, but they just don’t have a program for her that works.
It is to weep.

All the Darth Vader stuff is reminding me of one of D26’s childhood birthdays… I do not remember exactly how old she was… quite little though! She insisted that every aspect of her party had to be about Darth Vader. We sang Happy Birthday to the tune of the star wars imperial march, we made light sabers for all the kids out of pool noodles so that they could happily whack each other, etc.
But that’s not all…! The party was at a local park, and it just happened that in the adjoining park area, a large group of adults arrived with costumes and foam weapons! They were delighted to see our kids running around in star wars costumes with pool noodle light sabers… and the two groups had an epic foam-weapon battle! It was a wonderful random encounter. ![]()
I don’t know much about art related schools, but I know that WashU is a top choice for many art majoring students. Wish your daughter best of luck! My D26 always loved arts and wanted to go to art school/major. As I mentioned earlier, she spent 15 hours/week in an art studio for the last two years. Most of the time, she was just having fun there and also relieving stress from school work and other activities. However, when it came time to choose a college, she really wanted to go to a regular college, non art majors, although she still wants to do something that relates to art for her career. She’s been mentoring kids with autism, through art classes and exhibitions which she really loves, thus she developed interest in psychology. Last summer, she participated in BU Rise Internship program with its Neuroscience Dept and she thoroughly enjoyed it to my surprise because she was a never stem kid at all. I really hope that all these experiences will help her to figure out what she wants to do in college and her career.
C26 gave a 10/30 deadline because we wanted it in by 10/31. Teacher submitted 11-something pm on 10/29!! Most schools give some leeway for school-supplied things including LORs but one of C26’s schools had a hard deadline for everything to have been received by EA date.
I wish I could have convinced my D to do this! I suggested that she give them an earlier deadline, but she refused because it felt dishonest. Probably would have been more effective though!
Love that! The only Star Wars poster we have in the house – I think? – is the original Episode 1 poster of the kid casting Darth Vader’s shadow that I bought and framed for my husband before it came out – before we saw it, LOL. (We were living in NYC at the time, and we desperately wanted to see it at the Ziegfeld when it was released, so I sat on Moviefone to make that happen.
) And then years later there was much parenting debate and consulting of the internets for the proper order in which to introduce them to our kids.
Our basement theater room (not quite so elaborate!) has favorite old movie posters in the 27x40 or 27x41 size. DH and I each got to choose half the posters. So I chose the John Hughes trilogy, Real Genius, Footloose, Ferris Bueller, Top Gun.
He chose The Sting, Rear Window, The Natural, Raiders, Karate Kid, ET, Back to the Future, Stand By Me.
Plus Princess Bride, which was a mutual choice. ![]()
(Lest you get the wrong idea, I do have a whole basement wall dedicated to Firefly, lol.)
If 11/1 was a weekday I’d probably have suggested 10/31 but weekend deadlines unnerve me… even though practically I know they probably are ok until the Monday.
Also, in CA we generally don’t even have basements so no basement theaters here lol. But what a great idea.
It’s all about Star Wars and Disney at our house.
Your movie room looks awesome!!
When we downsize after D26 graduates, better hope prospective buyers like Star Wars or we’re in big trouble.
Need to put a sign around Darth Maul - if you touch him, you must buy the house.
Please tell us her birthday is May the 4th! ![]()
LOL, only the Sith deal in absolutes!
One of my hobbies is jotting down funny conversations with my kids. Another with D22, this was fall 2020. Pretty typical conversation with her:
Me: “Are you full, or do you need something else to eat?”
D22: “I think I’m full.”
Me: “You think? You should commit.”
D22: “Only a Sith deals in absolutes. Which is in itself an absolute.”
Me: “It’s too early for philosophy.”
D22: “That’s not philosophy. That’s Star Wars.”
Me: “So do you need something else to eat?”
D22: “No, I think I’m full.”
Ha. I don’t jot down but occasionally I’ll post something on Facebook. Like this gem that came up from a 9th grade carpool ride home:
“We watched a movie about the French Revolution. It was, like, 90 minutes of people getting executed.”
I should make a note of the gems…not that there’s much time left ![]()
The themed little-kid parties were my favorite! We once had a mashup of Mario Kart and My Little Pony for my b/g twins – oh my goodness, that was a riot of color, LOL. And I do believe we spent more on themed cakes for that party than our wedding cake cost.
(DH said never again!)
Oldest’s Phineas and Ferb party in 2nd grade is the best one we threw, however. DH donned a lab coat and Dr. Doofenschmirzt name tag to answer the door and run all the games. ![]()
In 8th grade. D24:
“Dad, what do you call an Asian kid who gets a “B”?
“Bsian”
(We’re a half Asian family so hopefully this doesnt offend anyone).
Favorite for me from D26 was when she was maybe 3 or 4 years old. We’re at the dinner table chatting about our days, and I mentioned to my wife that maybe it was time to exercise some stock options from the company I worked at. D26 looks incredulously at me and says, “You EXERCISE?!”
Ouch kid. Very ouch.
I used to be hardcore about it because the kids were SO funny when they were little. And then I had so many conversations recorded that I’d compile the best ones from the year and send them out with our holiday cards.
At some point I stopped – because the kids got more reluctant to let me post about them.
Here is a gem from when we were stuck at home during the pandemic. Twins had just turned 13, I think.
During a round of Big Boggle…
D26: “And sorry Mom, but I found porn.”
S25: “That’s not a word.”
Me: “Yeah, it’s short for pornography.”
S25: “Oh right, Jack told me about a cool band called Porn. Alexa, play Porn.”
Alexa: “Here is a song by Korn.”
Me: “Korn, S25. KORN.”
S25: “No I swear it’s Porn. I’ll Google it right now.”
D26: “NO S25, do not Google porn. You’ll be sorry.”
(The conversation went downhill from there, but I’ll spare y’all.)
ETA – S25 has a speech/language disorder. His vocab blunders are unintentionally hilarious.
Yup we are!
