I had a dream last night D26 was deferred from all of her EA schools and her ED. It was a nightmare! so ready for all of it to be over and do not want to wait until March! She was limited as well with her intended major and geographical restrictions (nowhere cold) and definitely wants a rah rah school.
So what do we do to pass the time until the decisions start to release?
Pretty much, with the late addition of Pitt. But tbh other than Boulder the other ones are there because mom was panicking about having options to choose from if that didnât work out - I got a bit spooked this past round when someone with similar GPA here on cc was deferred and then waitlisted for that program at Boulder. Itâs a pretty short list, 6 schools (2 of which are already likely to not make the shortlist).
I canât believe that my kid will know the results of five applications by Christmas and could even be done with this process by then. All that time this summer researching RD schools and that might not matter.
I felt a little like that with D19 - all that effort of researching and touring and she hardly even applied to most of the schools because of her ED acceptance! Though to be fair, the comparison from tours also helped her be sure about where she wanted to ED.
We are having the opposite problem. Despite research and conversations and visits, etc., my D just threw several more schools on her Common App (sight unseen, and now past EA deadlines). Her ambivalence is causing her to cast a wider and wider netâŠ. Ugh
D26 is only applying to 6 schools. Not sure if this is a good idea but UConn is 100% guaranteed admit (with free tuition) so thatâs her fallback.
We toured several schools and she just wasnt excited about most of them. Not sure if we should expand the list but it almost feels forced so weâre probably just going to roll with it and see what happens.
Mine just did not want to âwaste her timeâ traveling to tour schools! We only toured a few in our local area, and a couple in Oregon when she was already on vacation up there.
Out of the 9 early schools she applied to, she has toured NONE of themâŠ
We toured one. We had planned to tour a few more but ran out of time. Anyway, itâs a short list and we will hopefully have a few admitted student visits to do to help decide. (Again..at momâs urging because C26 would be one and done if they got in there. But they understand /are happy with the idea that they should at least do some comparison before a 4-year commitment. )
D26 has ended up applying to only 4. Was going to be 5 schools, but she changed her mind on 1 of them. She knows a couple of classmates who are applying to a large list of collegesâŠtheyâre pretty stressed out right now. D26 is content with the schools on her list.
Everybody has to run their own race. I think that your kid has a 100% guaranteed admit is pretty fantastic. UConn is a great school.
My D told me about two different friends who applied ED to schools that they donât really have a strong desire to attend, but the parents are alums and there has been an expectation their whole lives that they would go.
I am so glad none of us parents on this thread are doing that!
I actually regret touring a bunch of schools with D26. I suggested colleges she might be interested in and to get a feel for small/medium/large/rural/urban/suburban. SHE was touring to make a decision to apply to that school. This meant that some schools that should probably have stayed on her list got cut immediately because she wasnât feeling it. She cut one school because of the âvibesâ, but after really asking her what the issue was, it turns out it was because it was raining that day! What?!
So my new rule of thumb is that weâre not touring anything else until all the decisions are in.
This is us as well but general tours for S26 were met with ambivalence. Only once we started doing info sessions related to his chosen major did he seem engaged. S26 also could care less about the dorms. A cardboard box would be fine. They all have a dining hall? Good enough. Weâre going to make a short list once the decisions are all in on where to tour (and winter sport is over) and try to attend ones with specific major-related open houses, etc.
This is a GREAT point! At one open house that we attended, D26 actually got to see the physics department up close and speak with several professors. She LOVED it! Itâs a likely school for her, but sheâd be delighted to attend based on interactions with that department alone.
