Ok, STARS reviewed by D26 on the UTSA app. It’s good that she took a 2nd look at it before it was submitted because there were a couple of errors. My gut says that she’ll have an admissions decision by the end of the month.
I swear this keeps me up at night, lol. I spent many months this year researching and trying to find schools like a crazed person. The fact that D26 wants a niche major that isn’t offered most places – plus the whole band thing, and her geographical preferences – limits the choices quite a bit. And that’s probably a good thing.
If she wanted to study biology or history or something, there is no way she could have narrowed down her list. ![]()
I remember this happening in S23’s year, too.
I did a google search and it actually appears relatively common, at least every few years
Similar but without band! (C26 does want to be able to sing in an ensemble or similar but looks like that is available most places.) It’s annoying the number of colleges we’ve seen that might have been a good fit but don’t offer the major.
That’s Case Western for mine! On paper it seems perfect in every other way except the major, lol.
Sat down with D26 today to help her get organized now that the big application push is done.
She says, “Oh, Atlanta Clarinet Day is next weekend. I can drive myself. But can you pay for it? It’s $80. Also, believe it or not, I need to make a shoebox diorama for BC Calc to illustrate a word problem. Do we have a shoebox?”

I know kids are universally like this with the last-minute requests, but how is this still happening senior year? For the love.
The one that actually surprised me was Johns Hopkins. She’s not applying there, but did sign up for emails to see what the fuss is about (her friend wants to go).
D26 applied to a lot, but has some spots left on the common app to add some RD if the EAs don’t pan out. Shell game!
I wondered about this - whether the schools do this every year? D26 got a lot of emails this morning with same. Made me wonder if apps are down or if this is the norm each year to cause a sense of urgency.
I love that - that your C26 happened upon one later in the process and it might end up being the one!
According the internet it’s been common for Cornell to do this over the years as well.
Hot cross buns? Is that the all time recorder song?
Yes so good that yours has some niche things to help narrow! D26 just wants BIG, good academics and fun. Intended major is available everywhere. So really our budget is the only thing that helped narrow it some!
Hahaha! I admit I don’t miss the days of “concerts” and “dance parties” – and in our house, it was puppet shows, because DH built the kids a fancy puppet theater one year when they were little – and then we’d be forced to sit there and watch this nonsensical stuff. ![]()
And oh, the recorder era. I have twins, remember, so we had TWO children blasting Hot Cross Buns at the same time.
One of my favorite D26 anecdotes, which illustrates who she is as a human – I told her to go upstairs and take a shower and get ready for bed, and 10 minutes later we heard the strains of Kumbaya on recorder coming from her room. Kumbaya, really. I remember my older kid literally falling on the floor in laughter. Um, DH and I just looked at each other like, does she know we can HEAR her?

This has been me all this last week!!!
(and with all the Pitt acceptances- I was having a moment of ‘Why Is she Not Applying Here Also!!!’ ![]()
)
I am somewhat glad that this 1st deadline has come and gone finally- no more need to worry about this deadline- time to move the anxiety on to the next thing
!!!
Welp- 2 apps submitted and she says that’s all she wants to do. One reach- her number one. ED. And one safety- a state school she’s an auto admit that is her number 2 lol.
I literally spent months agonizing with her over where to apply and where to tour. We literally drove the entire East Coast touring dozens of schools. And what did it boil down to? She doesn’t want to be more than two hours away from her boyfriend. And she wants a school that has a strong English program. and she does not want anything with a Greek life. That’s it. Everything else, all of her check boxes and spreadsheets and lists and agonizing for days and weeks and months, down to two choices. Lol.
Her first choice is Colby. She loves it, but she knows it’s a reach due to finances. they are need aware. Her second choice is UMaine Farmington. I spent weeks trying to convince her to apply there. Little did I know that all I needed to do is make sure her boyfriend committed there.
I guess we are probably done lol. So much effort boiled down to 15 minutes in front of the computer, pressing submit and double checking everything.
did anyone else’s kid do this? Pick their top choice or their top few choices and just get it done and now you just wait and see how things shake out. My wallet is happy, I can tell you all that much. ![]()
I did just convince her to re-tour number two choice just to make sure that she is satisfied if that’s where she ends up. Sigh. Don’t get me wrong, i want her to be done. I just don’t want her to have massive regrets for not applying to more places.
That is awesome! If she ever has a moment of doubt about her choice, all the spreadsheets and lists will be there to remind her of how thorough her process was. Great work ![]()
