SNA is one of the best airports in the country. Unless you take the last flight and miss the curfew and then they fly into LAX and you have to take a bus to SNA.
Small complaint:
Yesterday, D26 received what is now, I think, the 3rd email from University of the Incarnate Word claiming that they havenāt received her high school transcript. Yet when she looks on their admissions portal, it says right there that theyāve received it. So she sent them a screen shot of that.
Every additional email like this puts a nail in the coffin, in my mind, for this school. Like OH MY GOSH for the love of all that is holy, your system says that youāve already received it!
Apt considering the name of the college ![]()
On a positive note, UT-San Antonio invited D26 to join their honors college. ![]()
This is annoying. Iād be feeling just like you, but I love that she sent them a screen shot. Great way to deal with it.
More good news! Sheās been awarded a $2500/yr merit scholarship. According to the collegeās website, this means that theyāre also waiving the OOS tuition add-on, so that gets tuition/year down to $8948.
Plus room & board, that makes the UTSA tuition, room & board total to $24,618.
Plus airfare expenses if she chooses to attend there.

All this talk of airports - I havenāt even really considered how good or bad the airport is ā or navigating FROM the airports to the schools. I guess I will come back and ask for airport opinions if this becomes relevant in late March! ![]()
This is one of the things to love about Boulder - they run buses 24-7-365 between the college and airport. How to get from airport to the school is one thing, but another thing to be concerned about if you have to actually arrange a transfer or depend on a bus or train timetable etc is what happens if a flight is significantly delayed. Itās one thing if youāre flying somewhere with a 24 hour subway operation, say, but a different kettle of fish if you need to do something else if kid ends up landing past the last departure. (Though I guess most places have uber now as a last resort)
Purdue in West Lafayette has a pretty substantial set of student bus/shuttle service which leave from central campus with either Chicago OāHare or Indianapolis International as destinations - and obviously shuttling back to campus. Itās about an hour ride to Indianapolis.
Checking in from Tulum where DH and I escaped as I am on a business retreat. D26 successfully submitted her last applications - UC ![]()
As for airports I will say RDU easy to navigate and S24 has had no issue getting to / from Duke. They recently started running buses as well for busy holidays like Thanksgiving. We are not very far and he can sometimes get a ride as well. It is something to consider when selecting schools and weāve had many talks with D26 of the inconvenient travel associated with going to California. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get thereā¦
That is one of my reservations with Miami Ohio, actually ā itās more than an hour from the Cincinnati airport, and about a $90 Uber.
I think there are shuttles from the school, but not free or frequent.
If D26 lands there, most likely sheād have a car, so she could drive and park at the airport. Thatās not great for the long winter break, though.
Still, D22 has managed to find friends to share an Uber to the airport (her school has a student-built app for people looking to share Ubers) ā and sheās also taken one by herself many times, and itās been totally fine. So Iām trying not to worry about it too much ā clearly people figure it out!
Here is a service that a lot of kids use at Miami of Ohio!
The ease (or not) of transportation to/from the closest airport is definitely a factor if the student wonāt have a car on campus. For 1 of the colleges that D24 applied to, there was no Uber or Lyft available in the town. There was one taxi available in town. The college offered a shuttle service to the airport at the beginning and end of each semester, but not for Thanksgiving break.
D24 opted not to attend there. That college was awesome, though. Really great programs in different majors, thriving art & music community, close knit community on campus & in the surrounding town. It would have been cheaper to attend than the college sheās currently attending. You could fill your fine arts GE requirement by taking a glass blowing class.
But the difficulty of getting to the airport was definitely a deciding factor. Made it feel a little too far from home.
Unrelated note:
Trimester 1 grades came out today. D26ās report card is great! Aās in her capstone math & science classes and B+'s in her capstone spanish & Middle Eastern Culture & History classes. The history teacher said he runs the class like a college classā¦theyāve been having to write essays every week. By the time the class is over, sheāll be fully ready for essay writing in college. The college counseling class is pass/fail, so sheās good there. ![]()
My daughter was accepted to the University of Delaware on Friday (never got an email so she didnāt know for a few days)! Despite the fact that itās more of a safety for her, she loved the school when we visited for a tour and a cheer clinic, so was excited to have that acceptance. Tonight she had a call from the cheer coach and they offered her a roster spot with an athletic scholarship!!! Obviously cheer isnāt a big $$ sport (actually in a lot of schools it isnāt even considered a sport since it isnāt by the NCAA) so itās not a ton but still very exciting. They said that would be added to whatever she gets as merit. I think this will be hard for her to pass up, but we will see. They told her she doesnāt have to make a decision immediately, which is good because she wants to wait to see whether she gets an acceptance to the honors college first. And we have a couple visits to other schools coming up. For now, weāre just going to bask in her excitement.
So fun! Congratulations ![]()
UDel is an awesome school! Congrats to your daughter on the acceptance plus the cheer spot and $!
Thank you! We have yet to come across anyone who doesnāt love it there. We didnāt know much about it but someone mentioned it so we went for a visit and cheer clinic when we were touring a couple of other schools nearby. We were really pleasantly surprised.
Fabulous! Congrats to her!
Exciting news! Thatās great!
RDU is the easiest airport Iāve ever navigated - Students at UNC-CH, Duke, NCSU or the multiple smaller colleges around here can be from campus to security gate in 20, 15 and 10 minutes respectively .
Except during RTP Rushhour -or- if thereās snow or ice.
It doesnāt matter the actual amount of snow or ice, if thereās anything in the air (or on the ground) then Interstate 40 becomes locked by peopel driving 3 miles an hour with their hazards on. Fortunately, we donāt often get snow or ice - but once a year or so⦠itās Snowmeggedon.
