This is my experience too. I have no access to portals whatsoever; my D26 would find it quite amusing that I would have access to any of that
What is portal astrology? Like, what is the definition of it? It’s probably irrelevant to me as I can’t access anything, but I’m curious, as that phrase has gotten a lot of play around here.
And her first admissions notification, an EA, will not come until around December 19… we are still in the thick of applying and will be until early January!
The UGA blog indicates they extended admissions to 6,100 out of 13,530 In State EA applicants - thats about 45% of the instate Georgia EAs.
UGA indicates they hit roughly an 80/20 split for Instate / OOS enrollment. There was also a remark somewhere in teh blogs that historically they had around 56% of the instate Georgia offers actually enroll.
So if I back the math out -
6200 enrollment class at 80% instate = 4,960 In State Georgians.
4,960 In State Georgian Enroll / 0.56% admissions yield = 8,860 admissions offers extended to instate Georgians for enrollment.
In a given year if 8,860 offers are extended, then EA just extended 6,100.
That leaves roughly 2750 admissions offers to be made for the EA deferrals and those who will be regular decision pool.
The only one I know of is that on the Penn State EA thread a couple parents with kids who applied last year had mentioned that if the “testing” button in the portal disappears at 7 pm, then the decision is coming at MN. It was exactly that for D26 - we waited up until midnight for it, which was actually fun. They referred to that as Portal Astrology.
There was one year that the NYU thread was literary almost entirely portal astrology … felt like a massive waste of effort and was painful to read. (And no, there is nothing definitive there )
There is an entire (sub) culture of parents (and a portion of students) who follow every item on their portal screen - buttons, headers, ads etc. Things like if there’s a button for if you want to withdraw your application, and then it disappears as the decision date gets closer it means decisions are about to come out. If the color of the school banner changes, etc. They also link them to admissions/decline/deferral decisions. Then someone will post a ‘hack’ to see if you can get access to ‘admitted student day’ or ‘housing applications’ - which is usually some manipulation of your portal ID and student name configuration (school specific) followed yb the schools internet address mutations.
Then people start going wild over if something has actually changed or not, stuff reappearing etc, and people start trying the hacks but can’t get in or out or get redirected etc. It gets anxious and frenetic - you can almost smell the room.
I get that. But when you are waiting all day for results to come out and everyone is going back and forth about what is going on (or not going on) in the portals, it is a fine way to pass the time. The portal astrology might end up being absolute bunk, but I just love the community in the midst of all that prognosticating.
That’s one reason why portal astrology should always be directed to a separate portal astrology thread for that school. It tends to turn into lots of posts.
The other reason to use dedicated portal astrology threads is that some people are stressed out by portal astrology. Others find it to be entertaining. Best to split it off for those that enjoy it.
There also seems to be a high school student thing where they like to complain to other students about how they are “so cooked” or whatever. It seems to serve a purpose for some… like blowing off steam. Maybe being loudly anxious in a group is also more comforting for some than being quietly anxious all by themselves.
I had no idea. When a couple people mentioned it on the Penn State thread, I assumed they had come up with the term LOL. Now I am off to find these threads hahahaha! JK, Sounds anxiety invoking for me.
Woohoo! Congrats!! That’s great news. I bet dad is happy. And the auto admit to the honors college is huge! My D22 was so put out that she didn’t get that, and I made her apply to the honors college later – which was a huge PITA because it was her “safety” (although she didn’t say that to anyone lest they throw things at her head, lol).
I texted my D26, and she said three band seniors applied. Of those, I know one isn’t keen on it, another applied ED to NYU, and the third really wants to go to UGA. I hope the cheering she said she heard was for the third kid.
So you weren’t far off - Dr. Graves just answered questions on the deferral students as well;
Of the 13,539 In State EA applicants, they gave admissions offers to 6100 -and- deferred another est 6,000 (including some percentage that had -incomplete apps- (ugh!).
This should mean about only about 1,400+ of those 13,500+ EA in state apps (or about 10.5%) received denials (Did these used to be called rejections?)
So it looks like the EA Admit is more or less equal to the EA Deferral for your instate students.
I’m actually surprised it’s equal – I had in my head that they accept far fewer in-state EA than they defer. I wonder if it was different in years past. (My older one applied for fall 2022.)
I also have the sense that they don’t like to take all of their incoming class from the ATL metro area. But we are in an area with a lot of high-performing schools, and thus it seems harder to get in from this area. EA1 release is always FRAUGHT around here with a bunch of disappointed kids.
We are in Raleigh / Wake County - I suspect similar high concentrations of high performing kids / high pressure parents. (This is apparently also true for Chalotte / Mecklenburg County).
The UNC and NCSTATE EA application route is huge here - and it will be a lot of disappointed kids.
