I have to admit - seeing the first batches of ED and EA are making this more real. My D26 only has a few decisions coming next week -so I think it will be a long haul.
S26ās best friend, who is amazing as I am sure all the applicants are, was just deferred at Johns Hopkins from ED. He make the mistake of checking his portal at school, was upset, then had to sit through classes the rest of the day. S26 was planning a little celebration if he got in. So tough on these kids. Iām sure heāll have plenty of acceptances, but heās been the best bud since they were little, so we were rooting for him.
Two big acceptances here to Clemson and Ohio State. D20 is a Clemson grad and D23 is currently at Ohio State so they were really rooting for S26 to get into both. Still waiting on a few more, including 2 next week, but heās feeling really good about his options.
D26 got accepted to UTulsa today w/merit scholarship of $24,000/yr. Prior to a $5500/yr student loan, that makes tuition, room & board to be $42,266.
Not affordable.
Sheās doing 1 last attempt at the ACT tomorrow. If she gets high enough score, she could apply for their full tuition presidential scholarship.
Otherwise, itās a no go. So good news, but frustrating news at the same time. Merit scholarship awarded ended up a little less than we expected from the NPC. Iām frustrated because Tulsa is a great school with an awesome cybersecurity program.
Oh well. She could always go there for grad school. Their masterās program in cybersecurity is really great.
This leaves 1 more month to wait on U of A. Pretty sure now thatās where she will end up! Itās an awesome fit for her.
In other news, the counselor sent an email out to parents yesterday re: admissions outcomes. They spent time in the counseling class talking to the seniors about it. Highlight of info from the counselor:
- If you got accepted, celebrate! But remember that you donāt have to pay a deposit right away.
- If you got deferred, thereās things you can do if you want to strengthen your application. And if you want to do that, talk to the counselors.
- if youāre offered a spot on the waitlist, youāre not admitted yet and you might never be. Make sure youāre pursuing other options and donāt count on the waitlist coming through.
- If youāre denied, this denial doesnāt define your worth or future success. College admissions is not clear-cut, and every year, thousands of qualified students are denied. There are many paths to achieving your goals.
- Open your decisions at home, preferably with your parent(s) present. Students arenāt allowed to open decisions at school in front of classmates. If your decision gets released during school hours, you can go to the counseling office to look up the admission decision. If you got in to your #1 school, donāt be big and loud about it; understand that some of your classmates might have been denied from that same school.
So, apparently D26 did record herself checking her portal yesterday. Sheās a Luddite, not very facile at web portals and such. Most of the video was her struggling to access the portal. A bit of cursing. When she finally got in, all she said was, āThank freaking god!ā The whole thing was hilarious and so authentically her.
In other news- d26ās first track meet was a success! Sheās solidly middle of the pack for her events but considering sheās in the senior division and had a grand total of 3 weeks of practice- Iād say sheās a natural!
Iām trying VERY hard to give her space re:the big deferral. But she was chatty after the meet and mentioned a few positives to the school she was accepted to (UMaine Farmington): they WANT her, scholarship $$ offered, personal letter, honors program invite. So Iām hoping sheās come to terms with it.
As for Colby, Her mid year grades arenāt great. Calc is killing her (itāll be her first B if the trend continues) . So sheāll keep her name in the running I think, but her chances are low.
Congratulations and hugs all at the same time! Affording these crazy over priced colleges is no fun!
So does that mean you are done?
I missed your she got in post yesterday amongst all of the admission decision posts. Congratulations! I knew she had it in the bag!
OOS UGA admission. First EA decision in.
Big relief for her to here from a school in her āTop 5ā.
Congratulations nice to have solid options
This all sounds very wise. And, if I may offer some observations from our experiences with (very) recent yearsā rounds with highly selective schools: depending on the rest of the application, one B (in calc no less!) on a transcript of Aās and other amazing things like your D26 sounds like she has isnāt going to be what makes or ābreaksā things. (I put breaks in quotes because there is nothing broken about any of our kidsā applications IMO!) We have a kiddo currently at a super selective college who got a B+ in calc senior year, including on the first semester transcript sent in before the decision was released. So hang in there.
Congratulations! Awesome news. I saw UGAās OOS numbers come out and was trying to remember who here had applied.
This is a great one to have in pocket!
I have a good friend from upstate NY whose daughter is a freshman at UGA, and since my kid is interested in RIT, we joke that we might just be trading kids, lol.
Congratulations!
The UC Application sent out emails yesterday requesting verification of items on the application from randomly selected applicants. S26 checked and did not get a request. He said one student from his class was selected and was in a panic because she lost the certificate for the volunteering activity they selected for verification.
One of the things I really appreciate about our over-burdened college counselor is that she requests proof of every single activity before she writes the counselor recommendation for the common app. It really helped S26 (and S24) gather all the materials and proof and be very accurate. The counselor also mentioned that she gets the occasional phone calls from colleges to verify details on the application.
But the vast majority of students only apply to UCs, CSUs, and CC. I do remember the counselor warning students about the verification process in her presentation slides. And every single UC Application webinar I watched did the same. But I guess it was a bit of a shock to many kids at our school that the UCs can request proof.
Someone on Reddit the other day posted that one of the ivies, I donāt remember which, had reached out to their counselor to verify some of the awards and honors the student had listed. Unclear if it was random.
Probably Yale. I read a couple days ago they were verifying info now because they were burned last year and kicked someone out for lying on their app.
Is it unreasonable to be annoyed because a college seems to be releasing decisions actually on the day they originally said they would and not a few days before like everyone else ![]()
Learned that one of D26s friends got into NYU ED. So excited for them. Even though we are in CA, that kid is very New York. So a great fit!
