Parents of the HS Class of 2026

I have this sense that we may be pretty close to each other! Our school was potentially going to be closed as well due to the preemptive power shutoff, but fortunately we were removed from Xcel’s targeted area. I was stressed about how they were going to deal with any interruption to finals, as well as what to do with all my food if it took days to get power back up!

And congrats to your D on her decision! My S26 hasn’t been able to feel too excited about his admissions to CU or Mines yet because he’s still feeling hopeful for his OOS options. Over the summer he was 50-50 with the idea of in-state versus OOS, but once he submitted his apps, his desire to go OOS has increased…making the wait that much more stressful.

Our school has 3 trimesters and final exams aren’t until 1st 2 weeks of May. But in 12th grade, you only do in-person classes for trimesters 1 & 2 and then if you’re doing a senior project, that happens off campus in trimester 3.

So for grades 9-11, the only final exam was at the end of the year. All classes were all-year-long classes. No options for a half-year class.

In middle school, they had ‘pre-comps’ for 3 days in the 2nd or 3rd week of January. Basically those + the comprehensive exams at end of the school year are designed as prep for final exams in high school. So for grades 6-8, there was some pressure to study over winter break (but my kids always refused to study over the break anyway).

I want to say this is a surprise, but I’ve read about some people doing this, but this is the first parent I’ve know personally who’s doing this: an acquaintance /friend of a friend is moving cities in the summer. Kids (twins) are in junior year and I asked about the disruption going into senior year (they don’t need to move just yet, hence the question). Said something like “oh we think it’ll be better for their college apps because we plan to put them into a very mediocre school, so they’ll stand out”. (Kids currently at a high school in the same district as C26’s, a smidgen less competitive but still very highly regarded. Father is a HYPSM grad and looking to push his kids in the same direction.)

I have joked with my husband that we should have just moved to Wyoming for a few years and send the kids to school there. I wish I could say I’m surprised that people would do this type of thing for real, but I’m really not.

I wonder if that would really work.

Don’t they have to report all high schools attended- so it would be known that they are only attending this school for 1 yr and then be judge also on previous school outcomes also?!

That is crazy what people will try. I just don’t get it.

Sweet congratulations :tada:

That’s what I’d think too. Seems too late to play that card.

But I do recall thinking back during the pandemic about moving to a state with an excellent public university to get that instate tuition!

It looks like UNC-CH Portal Astrology is about to start.
EA decisions for Instate would be ‘by’ Dec 20th, though historically UNC has release EA decisions a week early than their date - but this is the first year they’ve done EA IN-State split from OOS so who knows…
But somebody notice the UNC Admissions Instagram had done some updates… which is also something they do.

I don’t think they’ll end up with the results they might be hoping for.

It’s also a great way to end up with letters of rec from teachers who know nothing about your kid (so, basically, you have bad LOR).

If you’re just moving to a different school district in the same state, it probably won’t help. Moving to an “underrepresented” state would maybe help though. Schools like to say they have people from “all states and 25 countries” or whatever.

I didn’t get into the weeds of asking things like that. They know their kids are going to get great SAT scores (both because they’re smart and because dad is paying for tutors and insisting on many hours of tutoring) and that + APs etc would make them “stand out”. Honestly - something about this whole thing just feels exploitative to me, purposely putting kids from this kind of background into what I understand to be a pretty low income school.

I missed this- congratulations!!!

D26 just got her notice from RIT for conditional early acceptance to the Combined Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degrees program for Computer Engineering.

They say only a select few get this- but I feel they say this about everything  :person_shrugging:

But it does not matter if it is truly a select few or if everyone gets it because she is very excited about it- this is a path she currently is interested in pursuing, so it is nice to have that locked in now instead of worrying about applying a couple of years from now!

I personally know two families who actually did this and recently. Moved mid-high school career from a school district in-state where their kid was “merely average excellent” to our local high school, where, for certain reasons, they would stand way out. For one kid, they got the desired result—a very shiny admission in what some felt was a rather unfair way. That’s the “happy” story. The second family uprooted a very shy student against the student’s wishes for same reasons and it backfired. Genius sweet kid, but the stress and pressure caused grades to slide. Parents went nuts. Child was deferred from legacy preferred HPYSM school, then rejected. And the parents punished the poor kid from there with consequences. I know this because I volunteer at the school in a mental health capacity. Many parents need to be reminded that their kids are already wonderful and doing just fine as they are. I’m grateful that this thread is full of such terrific parents.

There was a thread here some time ago about “the one that got away” – about schools that you still feel wistful that your kid had to decline. Alas, they can only attend one!

I know some interesting parents that do all kinds of crazy things to try to gain advantages for their kids.

But THIS story made my blood boil, especially your last sentence about punishing the kid. What in the world? :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Pretty sure this is how I am going to feel about Penn State. It was magical while we were there visiting. It was summer move-in for the freshman so they were all walking around with their bags to orientation activities. The weather was stunning and D26 felt comfortable there, which hasn’t been the case everywhere. We should have visited in January instead maybe

Hugs. I think many will feel this. I am sentimental and this really hits me. D26 hasn’t committed yet, but I am already anticipating this feeling. Hopefully this feeling then passes in to all the excitement of the future for your D26 at RIT!

D26 has been accepted to Brown!

Obviously elated for her but also somewhat mixed emotions given the tragedy.

Super proud of D26 and all her hard work.
