Awesome!! Congratulations! That’s a great one to get.
We know a freshman at RPI this year having the BEST experience, and I tried so hard to get my kid to apply after I heard that, especially when we saw fun and happy pictures of the pep band. Alas, she declined to apply to this one and Stevens for (IMHO silly and nitpicky) things she didn’t like about the major.
It’s interesting because this is one that was NOT on her list until about May of this year. Then she got the Rensselaer medal from her school and became interested. It helped that a good friend from class of 2025 got the medal and is there now. It’s a top 3 as of now, so really nice to have this one in before the holidays. We were expecting January.
The kid we know there also got the medal! (It would be funny if it were the same kid – she’s not a twin who lives in Rochester, is she? )
My kiddo got the same sort of award from RIT last year – no one from her school applies, so it wasn’t hard for her college advising office to nominate her, lol – so although she has yet to get in, surely that bit of demonstrated interest should tip in her favor, I hope!
D22 flew home yesterday, D26 had her last exam this morning and is officially on break, and this afternoon we went to see our beloved Santa at the mall. We took our first pic with this Santa in 2004, the first one with all three kids in 2007, so this year was our 22nd year. We have every year in-between, too.
Sadly, this mall has gotten pretty empty, and there’s talk of redeveloping it into a mixed-use property. So no one was in line to see him, and we hung and chatted with Santa for like half an hour, lol. We heard about his gall bladder surgery, how he’s lost weight and now has to wear fake padding around his belly, and about his wife passing three years ago. We also learned where Santa lives when he’s not at the North Pole.
I don’t think I can convey how important this tradition has become to us – every year I hold my breath as we swing by the mall to check on his schedule. He’s getting pretty frail.
He chats with the kids as if he’s their surrogate grandfather – it’s really heartwarming. But he still makes a point of asking them what they want for Christmas. This year, D22 asked to get into grad school, S25 asked for his short film to be selected for a competition, and D26 told him all about her college choices and asked for “wisdom and discernment” as she made her decision. Seriously – verbatim.
D26 got into URI - with Presidential Scholarship and Honors (Marine Biology major - not something we have here in Kansas!). It’s about 10K above budget but there is still potential for more scholarships - so fingers crossed! She really loves this one on paper. We were super happy to hear positive news so early!
That’s the last of the ‘early batch’ of likely colleges. Release dates for 2 reaches and a target before the end of the month -and then its mid to late January for the next batch.
Congrats! One of my daughter’s best friends is at URI and loving it. Not Marine Biology, but it’s close to the ocean, so I assume it would be a great place for that.
So nice to see all the updates from the latest acceptances. D26 was accepted to Elon nursing with a presidential scholarship last night. She is feeling pretty terrible after her surgery and was out of it, but was able to pull it up on her phone and give a little “yay” and promptly fell back to sleep. I think for me, Elon will be the one that got away. Such a great school and seems really supportive. I know D26 would thrive there but the location and lack of sports culture there were enough for her to know she would not be happy.
It is a windy and rainy day here and I am home with D26 as she recuperates from surgery. Rough couple of nights. We are 48 hours out so in the worst of it right now with regards to pain and discomfort. I am really hoping things turn around by tomorrow- it is hard seeing them feel so terrible when there is not much we can do to make them feel better. S24 continues to be banished to the basement with the flu. His fever seems to be gone but the cough is lingering He is going pretty stir crazy. I am gratefully we have a finished basement so he has some place to go!
I have a ton of wrapping to get done this weekend. Hanukkah ends Monday and then we go right into Christmas mode. I only have one thing for S24 so I need to do some shopping for him. He is hard because he needs nothing and is one of those who feels bad for even asking for anything - he may end up getting cash if he does. not give me a list in the next couple days
We have a neighbor from North Carolina and they wanted all 3 of their kids to look at Elon. They really loved it, but none of their kids were interested. I feel like Elon gets that “one that got away” feeling a lot.
Another neighbor was complaining that she couldn’t figure out what to get for her daughter. Her daughter kept saying that she just wanted to get a gift for her friend! The neighbor is like, “NO, I want to get YOU a gift!”
The travel is insane. This year we have two ‘fly-away’ meets. One in Atlanta and one in Florida. I mean I don’t mind getting away from this NY weather, but the expenses add up! Gotta make the most of her last year though, as she won’t be continuing into college. Collegiate gymnastics is a different beast
My D26 really loved Elon when we looked at it more than a year ago, but then over the last year her interests/priorities changed, and she ended up not applying. We do know a couple kids thriving there.
My D26 got her first acceptance last night– Gonzaga, with $32K merit! The other top contenders, whose decisions we won’t hear from until March, are Conn College, Holy Cross, Santa Clara, and UCSB, but Gonzaga’s offer will be tough to beat (and my overall favorite when averaging cost, quality of education, distance, and size).
I wasn’t expecting news until today or tomorrow. It was a very fun family moment
Congratulations to everyone who has received acceptances this week!! So exciting!
My D26 had some mixed results thus far this application season. After two early acceptances to very solid public universities, she was rejected outright from her ED school, deferred from a target school (to which she showed absolutely no love or even mild interest), accepted by a moderately selective LAC with a big scholarship, then finally deferred from a selective school she would be thrilled to attend. That deferral was actually very encouraging and she is definitely motivated to persuade that school to accept her in RD (cannot ED2, unfortunately).
Now on to the RD schools, one of which she really loves! She still has supplemental essays and at least one LOCI to draft, plus midyear grades to strengthen! It will be a very busy January.
