Parents of the HS Class of 2026

We had a very laid back and relaxing week for the holiday break.
D26 has one more full week off and then back to school .
She dropped 2 of her electives for this last semester so she has a pretty sweet schedule for the remainder of the year- hoping that this will help to reduce the inevitable senioritis and not make it actually worse!!

Hubby and S20 were both supposed to go back to work today- but… a stomach bug got both of them :sob:.
Just waiting for the rest of us to get taken down with that soon. Seems inevitable… :anxious_face_with_sweat:.

Onto a more fun topic:
Any cool swag from those with acceptances yet?

D26 got this from RIT- thought it was a pretty cute package.
Came with a pair of RIT socks ?!
We are going for a visit mid-month for an accepted ED night/Hockey game- they asked her shirt size so I am assuming she will also be getting a t-shirt.

D26 got some stickers. For a soon-to-be $100k/year, you’d think we at least get a 6 oz gold bar from Costco but nope.

Stickers.

D26 submitted an application two days ago to Vassar without having anyone look at her supplemental essay. Zero second eyes — not her counselor, parent, brother, friend. Who does that? Ugh, this kid drives me crazy sometimes. Succeed or fail, she will have done it her way.

I’ve been disappointed in the swag so far. D26 got a poster from Pitt and some stickers from Rutgers Newark. Actually, the stickers aren’t bad. But that RIT setup looks nice!

I recall a friend saying that when her son got into Tennessee that they sent a whole box of stuff. When you opened the box, it played Rocky Top (their fight song) and had a bunch of confetti, etc. Made for a nice impression!

I suspect there’s some value in just sending something from the heart and then moving on. D26 has had me edit a lot of her essays. I’ve had to go back and remind her that if I edit anything out that takes away ā€œherā€ from the essay that she needs to put that right back in. I think it can be easy to edit to ā€œperfectionā€ and then it end up being bland. So maybe the bright side is that it’s definitely your D26s essay.

I agree. She must have liked it just the way it was. It’s also a sign that she’s starting to take full possession of her future and her college experience.

I did a decent amount of proofreading and word count editing for D22 and I wish I’d done less, to be honest. S26 has a much stronger reaction to my suggestions so I make fewer and really only raise my hand when something isn’t working for me as a reader or is an egregious grammar mistake.

I read D26’s common app personal statement after the fact. IMO, the spirit of the essay was amazing (biased of course) but you could tell it was written by a 17 year old.

In this day of super polished AI aided essays, authenticity (even if it’s not perfect) could be an asset.

Hiya, if they do decide to go to Italy for a trip, feel free to hit me up for food suggestions- I’m Italian and a foodie at heart

They’re definitely doing UK & Italy…half the time in London and the rest in Florence.

Those little tigers are SO cute!

I think socks are kind of common. UGA sends socks to everyone admitted (or at least they used to a few years back) – my D22 gave hers to a giant Georgia fan in her class, lol.

Disappointed here with the swag this year, too – mine hasn’t gotten anything really. No stickers, even. She did get the poster from Pitt and a letter from Georgia Tech, and I think only letters from Miami Ohio and UT Dallas (maybe? Definitely no swag, although we did get a Miami T-shirt and stress ball and other cute stuff when we toured).

I think Im going to limit my sarcastic remarks to this forum.

On a different thread, I quipped that if the Presidential Scholarship was $25k, how much was the Middle Manager Scholarship?

Not well recieved.

As my D22 often says to me – ā€œWith all the love in the world, that was terrible.ā€

My D26 got the nicest box from Clark University. She was admitted in November Early Action. It was a box with confetti, a Beanie, pen, keychain & stickers. So nice! We had actually withdrawn her application about a week before we got the box in the mail bc she got into her ED school. It definitely made a nice impression! Their acceptance letter was super cute too and mentioned some of her application in it. It reminded me of my D22 when she got into Northeastern Early Action. They sent the cutest valentines box with candied hearts and Northeastern quotes on them. Love when schools do that! So fun and really does make them stand out!

I love this! My D22 got a similar package from Furman a few years back – water bottle, t-shirt, confetti, lots of cute little things. And the t-shirt was a nice soft one – I think one of my girls still sleeps in it.

Personalized candied hearts are a great idea!

ETA – we toured Clark for my D26, but it ended up being not what she was looking for. Maybe she should have applied for the swag, lol!

D26 got a package that had a super cool minimalist drawing of the school mascot and a nice pendant with the school’s initials, from a women’s college. It was a really nice touch and 100% on brand for the school.

S26 received a small box from University of Puget Sound with some cute stuff inside. That’s it for swag here.

The Ithaca acceptance got our holidays off to a nice start! Had a pretty low key Christmas and then a snow storm Friday evening into Saturday allowed us an excuse to stay home in our PJs and relax. Watched frustrating football on Sunday and am back at work today! D26 has the rest of the week off and is doing next to nothing I’m sure. I think she has decided to forego any more applications, which is good because the last thing she needs is more decisions to make.

The swag game has been severely lacking for D26! S23 received hats, playing cards, water bottles, and other little knick knacks. D26 has only received stickers and only from a couple of schools. She hasn’t even gotten many of the ā€œI’m In!ā€ flags.

So far D26 has received Georgia Red Bulldog socks, and some kind of desktop kitsch that plays ā€œRocky Topā€ from UTK.

The best swag ever was a cowboy hat from Vanderbilt.

Thanks for the reassurance. I just think it’s crazy to write something important and send it off without having another eye on it. I’m not talking about having someone fully edit it, but just make sure there are no glaring typos or red flags. My husband and I would never write, for example, a cover letter or resume without having the other person look it over.
