At this point, there’s nothing you can do but trust she did well. And if she gets rejected, dont assume it was the essay because it could be other reasons.
D26 only applied to 3 schools. We thought it was really risky but that was her choice so we didnt push her. She went through the entire application herself and didnt want any input.
It was all on her and that’s the way she wanted it. IMO, some kids are really independent and it’s ok to let them go their natural way.
My S26 He did that for an LLC and Honors college application.
He also now has two decisions waiting for him that he has not checked. I know he has been admitted to the state flagship, because they emailed an invitation to accepted student events to my email. His reach decision came out right before Christmas and since he didn’t know (nor check his email) I did not tell him, because I’m pretty sure it is a rejection. He can check that when he is back home from our vacation in a few days
Made a visit to the post office today so D26 could apply for her passport for her graduation trip w/my sister. Despite it being AFTER Christmas, there was a lot of people there!
D26 sent a follow up email to a professor today…she & professor have been playing email tag trying to set up a date & time for them to meet online to discuss her senior project. Goal is to get a ‘site placement’ secured by 2/6, which is end of trimester #2. Trimester 3 is when the senior project happens.
Just scanning all the posts… sounds like fun holiday seasons for most, yay. We have been in Europe with family and friends and it has been really nice after in some cases, years since last seeing them. It has been freezing for these Californians (coldest Christmas in 15 years here; one day the “feels like” temp was around 7 deg F) but the past couple of days have been better.
Swag…some stickers from ASU and the Pitt poster. Not sure if UIC has sent anything while we’ve been away. Swag or no, I’d rather just see two “congratulations” letters at the end of January! This wait, ugh.
Swag-wise through snail mail, one college sent stickers. Another college gave S26 keychains, stickers, and a water bottle during accepted students’ day. We have yet to get anything from College #3.
No swag here, but S26 finally finished his essays just a few days before deadlines. He let me read them, I liked them a lot, totally his voice. There were a few too many likes that I had him cut out and that was it. We did a day trip to ski and now are all sore although D30 has fully recovered and asking for more activities which I haven’t come up with any yet.
Zero second eyes — not her counselor, parent, brother, friend. Who does that?
I have looked over every one of D26 applications because I had to pay at the end. I had her apply to Tulane because it was free, she does it all alone. Comes to tell me it’s done and happily remarks it didn’t require any additional time for her because it said “Why Tulane” was OPTIONAL!!! The child didn’t demonstrate any interest and doesn’t submit the Why Tulane! I said welp, there goes one deferral, and she was upset that I said she wasn’t getting in. I knew she wouldn’t be flat out rejected. So after the results came out, she came to let me know I was right. This was a lesson in nothing is really optional.
@CFP That is by far, the best swag I’ve heard so far! A cowboy hat!
To all Pluribus show fans, we just finished the season and WOW, I can’t believe they’re going to leave us all hanging for THAT long until the next season!
We are going to start watching Stranger Things next. Not sure how I feel about seeing the “kids” all grown up - again, another show that has a 2-3 year? gap between seasons!
They gave them out on an open house day when D24 visited. The hat probably only cost $5 but the excitement was palpable.
D24 took off the Vanderbilt logo and wore it at Rice since she thought students in Texas wore cowboy hats. She soon realized they didnt and it went into the donation pile.
UTK sent a cute box with a flag, a musical card (played the Tennessee Rocky Top fight song), stickers, and a poster.
Pitt gives out tons of swag at their admitted students day – shirts, socks, stadium-approved clear bag, etc. (They run a really outstanding admitted student day!)
Marquette typically sends a soft pretzel – which I think is super cute – but not until February or so.
Case Western sent a few things after we visited in November (a zipper pouch, pen, and post-it notes); I have heard they send something with acceptances, too, but nothing has been received yet.
Other than that, mostly signs/posters and stickers.
I didn’t really think it made too much of a difference that they were older - they had gone through a lot of ‘trauma’ (fictional) in the plot and I think that ages people. So it seemed almost natural that they were older.
That’s good to hear that seeing them older doesn’t make it too weird or make much of a difference. We’re hoping to start it tonight - we didn’t get to start last night!
Also -I am currently sitting at the kitchen table with my daughter as she writes her last 3 applications. During this process - I’ve mainly been her sounding board. I’ve really actually enjoyed the exchange of ideas -as she thinks deeply about herself and the issues she talks about in her essays. Also - I have found out that she has a splendidly funny writing style -whether schools will like it - who knows? But at least she is being herself.
They do! My S23 is at Pitt and still loving it! It has been such a great fit for him! IF your student ends up at Pitt, you’ll get more swag during Parents Weekend - like long sleeve Pitt shirts for EVERY member of your family!
I admit, I love college swag. My husband doesn’t because it’s just more stuff to bring home, lol.
That’s what I’ve done for my S as well. Sit beside him as he types away with me being a sounding board. I loved that time together. My S is completely done now with the process, just working on two (so far!) scholarship applications. He’s decided not to apply to the last school on his list - a reach school. His counselor thought he should aim higher so he added that last reach school but in the end he had a “come to terms with himself” moment and decided he would not want to be in that pressure-cooker environment.
