Parents of the HS Class of 2026

I’ll echo what @CFP said. Book the hotels ASAP, making sure you get the “flexible” rate so you can cancel up to 48 hours before travel.

For flights, you can book and usually you will get a travel credit if you have to cancel. Or you can pay a little more (at least on Delta) and get a refundable fare. I imagine the fare difference would be less than the extra cost of booking last minute.

Good luck.

Consider having her rank the schools before setting up trips - and try to get her top rated one(s) in first, because things like weather delays/flight cancellations, other opportunities can make things tight at the end of the year. It’s also possible they may absolutely love their top choice, and then you need to decide if you want them to visit additional schools (to be sure) versus saving that money.

Realize for most schools “Decision Day” is May 1st. So they will have expected you to have accepted an offer and put down your deposit by that day. I’m not suggesting you do this, but I have heard of multiple students/families accept more than one school and put down the minimal deposit at multiple schools because they had not had their chance to visit them yet - it hasn’t been an issue that I’m familiar with.

Also, if they are on a “waitlist” for a school they are truly interested in - you could keep that one on the back burner for visits but you’ll need to have some open weekends in May - because typically the schools will see the May 1st decision numbers and know roughly they’re attending student numbers confirmed (though some of those will end up declining later as they have gotten off the waitlist at the schools they were hoping for). Typically you don’t get the loooong grace period from waitlist offer of admissions to acceptance of the offer like you do with EA and RD. As I posted before, and this was 36+ years ago - University of Michigan gave me like 7 days to accept the offer or it would be pulled and offered to the next kid in line… I don’t know how tight the things they get are.

Also, many schools will already be setting up and booking out their ‘admitted student days’ for campus visits and tours, often a general campus tour session as well as breakouts to the individual colleges/programs your student has been admitted to (So like Purdue General and then Purdue Engineering or Purdue Business) - those admitted student days book up fast -as does the campus adjacent housing (like the University Inn or the University Union etc). You can certainly register for admitted tsudent days (and tours etc) and make hotel reservations now, before you decide to take teh offer or not! If you wait, often the admitted student days are already filled, and overregistering becomes a problem because you may have to play phone tag / email tag with your individual colleges administrative office to try to ask for dispensation to attend.

Is anyone else feeling tempted by all of the “extensions” emails colleges are sending out? S26 is totally DONE and has no desire to write any more supplemental essays… but I find myself unable to settle down (wait, a new Jan 15 deadline? no new essays?) I know I should not do that, his list is fine but … but …

This is exactly where we are .. waiting for end Jan to be able to plan properly. A bit annoying.

We ended up not doing any accepted student visits. Senior year spring was crazy for our D and we knew she wouldn’t have time. We ended up visiting schools ahead of time.

Unless your child’s top school is a crazy reach, I’d consider visiting when it’s convenient for you.

Many schools have virtual events for accepted students who can’t make it to campus.

Temporarily tempted as a parent, but The Child has said no. So no more applications.

Yep, I’m just sitting here with my feelings! Better to share them here than with S26… I can’t take the eye rolls from him :joy:

With D24, she applied to 7 schools and got accepted to all of them. We only attended TWO admitted student days: 1 at an in-state college and 1 out of state (at the school she ended up attending). For 1 college, we did our 1st and only visit in Feb after she got admitted, but it wasn’t for an admitted student day (visit was for a music scholarship audition)…that college was awesome, but ended up not getting selected because it felt too far away.

You don’t HAVE to attend on an admitted student day.

What I would do is this:

  • Figure out how many in-person visits you can afford.
  • Prioritize which ones you & kid feel are most important to attend.
  • Look at the weeks/weekends between late March & late April. Compare those weeks/weekends to other things you & kid have on your social, personal, & work calendars. For example, kid’s other extracurricular commitments might eliminate some weeks/weekends in April.
  • Make some preliminary hotel reservations as backups. When doing so, do NOT do a reservation that’s not refundable. Pick a reservation type that allows you to cancel 48-72 hr before the arrival date.
  • Go look now at flight prices. This might factor in how many in-person visits you do. For example, because of costs, there was 1 college we didn’t visit until AFTER D24 got accepted.
  • If you’re a Costco member, make some rental car reservations. You can cancel these at any time. I’ve found that Costco has some of the best car rental rates. Of course, you’d have to alter/update your reservation based on what your actual flights are. OR you can just use Costco right now to figure out what the car rental will cost.

Also, if you’ve already visited a college in person, you don’t HAVE to visit again after being accepted…ESPECIALLY if, like for most of us, money is a finite resource that you’re trying to conserve.

Can’t speak for @ECCA2026 but for us, we only ended up visiting one school ahead of applications. Two of the admits so far (not that school) are serious contenders, they will want to revisit the one we visited if they do get in (top choice for a long time and possibly still) and the 4th important one we are waiting for is a reach so not assuming we’ll be there (they also don’t seem to have published their admitted student day date yet). The two “contender” admits so far have a number of sessions though so we can be flexible with those if we need to, but one is the same airport as the reach so IF they get in that makes sense to tag-team the visits. I have this massive flow chart of “ifs” in my head

We went to D24’s admitted students day so we could check out the area, restaurants, etc. It was like a mini vacation.

We ended up meeting other parents and it was interesting to see the kids who were admitted and attending vs the ones who were evaluating their options.

We’re going to D26’s admitted students day for the same reasons. This one will be logistically easier since it’s only a 2 hr drive.

For us the juggling of admitted students days feels pressured because of housing shortages at her current top options. I hate to waste money on housing deposits, but can’t wait too long on that either or risk not getting a dorm. There is one more decision coming 1/23 and I think that will determine whether we need to push up the currently scheduled admitted days at her other schools. If she isn’t admitted to the school on 1/23 then we will keep the current plan which is to deposit at her top choice and visit 2-3 of the schools in February.

D26’s decision has realistically come down to four schools. She has acceptances from three of those, and we’re waiting on the fourth (end of this month). It’s a likely for her, but possibly more a target for the particular major she wants. For the purposes of planning, we’re assuming she gets in (even though I’m cringing at that hubris, lol).

One of the schools we don’t need to visit again – she spent a week there for a summer program, so she knows it well enough. Another is thankfully local to us, so it doesn’t require travel plans.

That leaves two. One we’re flying up Feb 20 to go to the admitted students day the following day. We haven’t visited this school – or even been to the city – before, so this was a must-do. I booked these flights and hotel a long time ago, as soon as she snagged an admitted students day spot.

Our local school, we’re doing the admitted students day on Feb 20. Kid then has to drive an hour back to school for play rehearsal, and then we’ll double back to the airport for our flight, getting in around midnight. Not ideal, but what can you do?

The last school we visited in Feb 2025 – the one where she doesn’t have an acceptance yet – so I’ve been waffling on whether we should go back. I’m thinking probably yes, and I’m trying to make it work so that we fly up the previous weekend to visit on Feb 16. She has that day off for president’s day weekend. It’s not an admitted students day, but they are offering a visit of the actual academic department with the ability to chat with faculty, etc.

That way, she’s seeing three of her top four choices within one week, which I think should give her all the info she needs (besides an online deep dive into exact curriculum) to make a decision.

I’m justifying the flight this way – we need to fly to D22’s graduation in May, plus D22 is producing another show this semester, and we want to try to fly out for that Easter weekend. So if D26 doesn’t get into the last school, or she changes her mind, I can cancel the flights and use the credit for a subsequent trip.

Are you all estimating when the admitted students days will take place? D26 has only gotten back 2.5 decisions so far (I’m counting the deferral as 1/2). Many of her reaches she won’t hear back from until March and only then I think we’ll know the admitted student days.

Hmm, or maybe I go find out for those that applied ED if they’ve been given an admitted students day yet…

You may not like this answer, but try asking ChatGPT – and then try to confirm with someone accepted ED if the info is accurate. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I suspect I’ll have to do a LOT of verification, lol!

I don’t think I could repeat what D26 would say to me if I suggested she apply to more schools at this point.

But no, honestly I haven’t even been tempted to suggest it. She’s looking for such a niche combo of things that I think we maxed out the possibilities (while staying within her preferred geographic area).

I asked it for RIT and Case Western. I know RIT’s are accurate.

I have booked two admitted student days for spring break, but we really won’t know her final choices until March! Better to book and cancel, I guess? We also have a regular old campus visit next month, rather than working our schedule around the big admitted student event

Did your D26 apply to Brown? (for some reason I thought you mentioned that)

If so, It’s April 17th.
