We saw that too. We also saw the prequels there but not even the Ziegfeld could save them.
{googling Ziegfeld}
LOTR is one of my absolute favorite trilogies (The Matrix is a close second). After seeing The Fellowship of the Ring in the theatre, I had to know what happened, so I read the books. Then I waited impatiently for the remaining movies to come out because I couldnât wait to see how they created the battle scenes.
Over the years Iâve watched them so many times. And now I can watch all them in about the span of a single movie because I have a tendency to fast forward through the slower scenes.
I may have to go see the re-release versions in the theaterâŠeven if I have to go alone. It makes me so sad that no one else in my household shares a love for fantasy movies. My D22 likes sci-fi (sheâs a Star Wars and Stranger Things fan). And I tried for years to get my kids to watch The Matrix with me. My S26 finally watched them allâŠbut without me. ![]()
My wife and I had a blast watching the reactions of our three kids last fall when they were all home together (D22, S24, D26) and made them watch âTropic Thunderâ for family movie night.
A movie that couldnât/wouldnât be made todayâŠ
âŠRDJ comes on screen in full blackface, afro and a straight out of Washington Park south side Chicago dialect / accent.
All three of them turn to my wife and whispered âwhat the actualâŠâ. They were tuned in to every scrap of dialogue from that moment on.

My husband and I -when we were dating - once attempted to watch all three of the extended versions of LOTR in one day. We did NOT succeed. ![]()
I had a co-worker that was quite younger than me that watched Blazing Saddles for the first time a few years ago. She said she had to turn it off because it was so racist.
All this movie talk totally brought up a core memory for me from when I was 7. It was May 1980 and my dad had my sister and I for the weekend (parents were divorced). He had somehow secured tickets for the release of Empire Strikes Back. We stood in line for what felt like HOURS and finally were admitted to the theater. About 30 minutes into the movie, I barfed. Like a LOT!!! My dad had my sister (11 at the time) take me to the bathroom
I remember her being really annoyed with me that I threw up and was âruiningâ the movie for her. We went back to our seats and about 15 minutes later I threw up again and we had to leave. My sister still talks about that now, in her 50âs. I will get annoyed about my sister changing plans and she will be like âremember when we waited for hours to see Empire Strikes Back and you threw up and we had to leaveâ?

Ooh, that is epic. ![]()
(Off topic, but we have a similar barfing story with D26 at Disney World on her 3rd birthday, lol.)
My parents took me to see the first one in the theater â I was 3 â and they tell me I fell asleep. They were newly immigrated to the US and hadnât the foggiest idea what was going on, lol, but they thought I would be interested. Guess not.
And then I vividly remember seeing Return of the Jedi in the theatre and being totally pumped. NO recollection of Empire Strikes Back â unsure I even saw it when it came out. It is to weep.
I went to see Return of the Jedi with my brownie/girl scount troop. We were pretty poor and my mom couldnât afford the ticket price (I think it was a package that included a drink and popcorn or something). I remember collecting coins and wound up paying with a gallon size bag of change. LOL
I remember watching Return of the Jedi wondering how we went from Sir Alec Guiness to Ewoks.
I will raise you Jar Jar BinksâŠ
The Onion posted this as a reel on FB, but searching on their site revealed that it was first posted in 2014. Still holds up. ![]()
My son was amazed how many film scores he did, we went through a few months where I would play a random film score and he would yell no he did this one too ? He did every film.
So, it finally happened - D26 found a typo/error in one of her submitted essays! She was working on her last one (or maybe penultimate, we shall see) and was looking at a similar essay she had already submitted. There, staring her in the face, was a second use of âDespite the factâŠâ It was at the end of one paragraph and at the beginning of another a couple of paragraphs later. Dâoh! I now understand why they say to never look at your submitted applications, lol.
Anyway, if thatâs the biggest issue then she knows itâs fine. Just a little annoyance when sheâs trying to get some final applications in. Her joke about me is, âMy editor should have caught this!â My joke is that ChatGPT would have caught that! ![]()
Wasnât it @tillycat whose kid got into her selective ED school after catching a typo in her essay as well?
This is a good thing â it means ChatGPT definitely didnât write her essays! ![]()
D26 came home from school yesterday all excited because the 8th grade english teacher she TAâs for told her that she has âelevated diction.â D26 said, âYou & Daddy have said stuff like that before, you know, using different words to explain it, but itâs, like, on another level when an English teacher tells you that. Itâs like âOh! I guess my mom and dad were right!ââ

I saw D26âs common app personal statement and noticed a couple of phrases that were less âpolishedâ. It didnt matter at all.
Well, maybe it did since CWRU deferred her. Dont trust their Common data set!
Thinking about admitted students day scheduling and wonder if any experienced folks with older kids have any tips. I imagine weâll want to go to 2-4 depending on results and what D26 wants, but only admitted to one of those now and all the other candidates if things go well are mid-late March notifications (sadly none of them had EA). Will have to fly to all of them unfortunately. Anybody have tips on planning out admitted student days where you have to hotel and likely fly on short notice? Iâve booked a hotel for the one admit we are likely to visit already (and she is signed up), but donât want to bite the bullet yet on plane tix in case she changes her mind when she gets more results.
I feel like Iâm waiting around then, Iâm going to be in a rush of booking expensive travel on a tight timeline. Just wondering if any wisdom anyone can share from past experience.
We may have the same problem -and our budget is limited
My recommendation is book the hotel early because most hotels will let you cancel within 72 hours (the mjority are probably 48 hours). My other recommendation is try to find a Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites, Hyatt House or Residence Inn where you can get a suite for the same price (or less) as a regular hotel room. Just a lot more space for the same rate.
Most flights if you cancel should give you credit so itâs lost dollars but you can use the credit at a later date. It may be better than paying for a last minute ticket which could be double or triple the current price.
But of course check the airline and hotel policies before booking anything.
