Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Apparently the people hoping they or there kids will get into Purdue don’t sleep much. 250 portal astrology posts is excessive. Like what the heck could even be happening on the portals to drive that?

are you kidding? 250 posts is nothing compared to some of those threads!! The NYU ED thread is 2800 posts and I think most of those are astrology

(That said, I may or may not have - in this dead time of waiting for month-end decisions -done some scrolling of past years to see if there is anything to look for)

Yeah, the public school in my town has tons of senior activities that all cost significant amount of money. My D26 is at a private school so it doesn’t directly impact us, but I’ve wondered if anyone is on top of watching for the low income kids and making sure they aren’t getting totally left out of things.

They have a “senior parade” in the spring where every student has a poster with pics of them through the years, the current professional senior pic, and the name of the college they are going to. Every one I’ve seen is professionally printed on a thick canvas type material that apparently is pretty expensive. For those kids whose families don’t have a spare couple hundred to spend on photos and printing, I’m not sure what happens. Are they just left out?:frowning:

Then there is the “senior assassin” game. There is a $25 cost to participate and then the winner gets the whole pot, which is crazy given that there are like 300 students in the graduating class. I’m not sure how many participate, but it is a big enough group that last year the town police felt the need to put a notice out to the public that there may be antics around town with water guns and to not be alarmed. These kids will literally stalk each other through grocery stores, at the library, pull up next to someone at a red light, etc and then shoot each other with water guns. It all feels very privileged to me but maybe I’m just a stick in the mud!

D26’s class did senior assassin, but she didn’t participate and there were tons of rules. D26 thought it was a dumb waste of time and said, “I’m not spending money on that!” :joy:

There’s a lot of senior year stuff, actually, that D26 has said, “Nope. I’m not doing that.”

At our school these kids can contact their counselor for help with paying or waiving costs for any formal school activities (prom, outings etc). Senior ditch day is traditionally a day on baker beach so doesn’t cost much other than gas and some food.

At our school, everything they send out about senior activities includes a note saying, “please contact us if you need any financial help with anything” and I know they are aware of who might need help and are proactive about that too. Now, not sure about things that aren’t school sponsored (like senior assassin, which I don’t think is pay to play in our town, but maybe it is - my daughter would just pay that herself), but I do know that my daughter has paid for others to participate in things before.

Your daughter sounds awesome, love that she helps others be able to participate! :two_hearts:

RIGHT?? I was almost going to search for ‘what now’ advice? Haha! I feel like she’s been working on this since the summer (and I’ve been ‘helping’ aka cojoling)-we both might need to take up new hobbies with all the time we have. Haha!

‘Tis the season of senior project planning and preparation. D26 had her meeting about it a couple days ago and has chosen the teacher she wants for her preceptor. She will be going to a MD office as her site. The way her school does it is you have to still come to school to go to your AP classes. If you are not in school in class you are expected to be at your site. She is taking two APs and her schedule is annoying- she will have to go back and forth a couple times a day in some instances. I told her she should just not do that and stay later/longer on the days she can to get more out of it. The official start date is n to until April 8 and they are off the week of April 20 for April Vacation. Senior project ends on May 28. Once her AP exams are over (May 15) she is expected to be at the site all day every day until May 28. I guess one good thing is she is getting great exposure to medical office stuff and she will be working at this site and getting paid this summer.

I work in healthcare (not clinical, administrative). Worked with a doctor a few years ago who was named “Dr. Doktor”

I was wondering how many times he’s had that song sung to him!

Our school district doesn’t allow many senior activities, so I don’t think they have anything until late April. Also, the school is only a year old, so there aren’t any traditions yet. S26 has a senior dinner for the HS soccer team today though, where one of the coaches cooks a meal for them.

His semester is interesting so far. The teacher for one class is out for the first month, so they have changing subs who don’t cover any material. In his sports marketing class the promised cameras and audio visual equipment were not delivered, so they are also not doing anything at the moment. Talk about an easy last semester …. (4 classes per semester, block schedule)

Not too crazy but my son’s 5th grade class (of only 15 kids) had an Alanna, Elena, Iliana, Ella, and Elijah. And one of the moms was also named Iliana.

When D24 was born, it seemed to be the season of female names that started with “Mc.” There were a lot of kids in her toddler & preschool class whose names started with “Mc.” McKenna, McKensey, and other similar variations. Probably the 1980s version of how every class had >1 ‘Jennifer’ and at least a couple of David’s.

Not sure if it’s different with US pronunciation, but D19’s preschool class had 2 Erin’s and an Aaron, all sounding the same.. and D19 was good friends with all 3 of them, so reports of the day could get pretty confusing :joy:

Erin and Aaron only sound the same if you don’t have a northeast/New York accent. :joy: (Which I don’t, lol)

In my D26’s preschool class, there were two kids named Jack, so to make it less confusing, the teacher identified them with their favorite colors. Thus we had Jack Black and Jack Blue. It was always amusing when D26 would come home and tell me about Jack Black’s antics that day. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
