S27 took the SAT again this morning. He said it “wasn’t too bad”, though he felt that math was easier than English. Interesting, because although he is a humanities kid, his last math score was 10 points higher than grammar/reading. He always runs out of time on the second reading section.
The Kid was accepted to college today!
Congrats! Say more!
How exciting!! Do tell us more!
S27 took the SAT yesterday. He’s done with SATs no matter what at this point and he’s happy about that.
Now he really needs to focus on his essay and finalizing his application. 6 weeks until first EA application is due! Like @Momof242729 - his school is really just getting started with workshops and programming to help seniors apply, with everything scheduled for October.
One more college visit later this month.
Final question, several of his classes this fall are DE (in HS thru local cc credit system)…but they are also his AP classes. My thinking is why pursue this as DE? He will get AP credit if he passes the exam..or won’t if he doesn’t …so why pay for a credit if he doesn’t understand the material enough to pass the exam? (Kids must take the exam per district policy if enrolled in AP class). Am I missing something?
So there is a chance some schools take the DE credits but not APs, I would look at a couple of kids top choices. You often, not always, can find a transfer credit database on schools website somewhere AND nearly always can find the AP credit list and double check a few to be sure. And at some schools APs are more readily transferred than DE, really depends on the schools..
However, generally I think you are right and it would be double paying…
The Kid was accepted to the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities. I am excited about the possibility of my kid becoming a golden gopher, which is their mascot. It feels great to have a good option in his back pocket while we wait six months for the rest of his admissions decisions. It feels like the $55 application fee was money well spent.
exciting!
Congratulations! That is really exciting. We get a lot of marketing from them, but is out of the geographic area for us.
Well, a rainy Sunday is a good day to work on the Common App. What was learned today, there are a lot of supplemental essays to be written, more for their target schools than for their reaches. Loyola, Maryland had a fun question of, “Do you have a dog or a cat?”. I thought that brought a little fun and personality to the application. More schools have been added so more tours to be done as they all track demonstrated interest. I am glad we have the majority completed though.
It is exciting to hear people are getting decisions! S27 is almost done with his athletic recruiting visits (by the end of this month, hopefully) and then he needs to settle down and prioritize schools. He’s been very close-lipped about what he is thinking thus far. I am a little nervous at how missing so much school over the last month is going to affect his senior year grades. So far he is staying (somewhat) afloat but he has missed 4.5 out of the last 9 school days, so not sure he’s going to be able to remain that way. During several of his visits he’s had a chance to meet with professors in his areas of interest, and that has I think lit a bit of a fire under him. He has had fun staying in the dorms with host students at most of the schools as well. He still has made minimal progress on his essays since school started and will really need to sit down and work on them once he is done with the visits.
C24 went through the athletic recruitment process. I found it easier than C27 as the schools were really narrowed down and we focused on three schools vs 10-12. Good luck with the process.
I wish he was already down to three, but maybe soon! Or maybe he is already and isn’t saying…
I confess that being reminded that November 1 (S27’s first official due date) is a mere six weeks away gave me a few heart palpitations. Yikes! I reminded him of that and he did seem to pause a bit, which is positive since he has not really wanted to work on his applications. To be fair, he has worked on his common app essay, but says he needs another couple drafts to complete it. I’m encouraging him to check that box asap, finalize his activity list, and at least turn in the schools that have no supplementals. I’m hoping that turning a few in will help snowball him to getting the others done more quickly. The bigger question is whether he moves from the Common App essay to the UC PIQs, because I think my D25’s PIQs ended up being modified for some of her other supplementals.
That just gave me some palpitations for sure! My kid has 4 due that day (!) only 2 have supplements though. But main essay isn’t ready - sigh. Nor is activity list… though I’m not too too worried about that.
Right there with you. S27 has 7 or 8 due that day (one might come off the list). 4 have supplements. No supplements have been worked on and all are different and can’t really be re-purposed. He’ll try though. ![]()
I am really hoping that he is DONE after that. Depends on December results.
Activity list is mostly done, I think. He just needs to have his school counselor read over it, make sure the ordering is good to go.
ugh…Mine does also have 3 due in early December (which seems weird, but alas). I feel like so spread out. Then more in early Jan, too for true RD schools..
Funny that everyone is talking about the “mere six weeks” because I just brought that up to D27 yesterday, and she corrected me and said “it’s actually seven weeks.”
As if that extra week is going to make a difference! I’m just happy the followed up with her recommenders because some teachers at her HS have agree to write so may of them!
I think we have a total of 13 schools now. The deadlines for 11 of them of either 11/1 or 11/15. The other two are due in January which means applications over December break. However they should receive some decisions before then and may not apply to the last two.
My S27 has finally narrowed his list of 21 schools down to 16.
(9 submissions, since there are 6 UCs and 3 CSUs on his list.) He also sat down with me during our weekly checkin and put those schools on his Common App and Naviance accounts.
He has also been getting started (finally!) on his brag sheet for rec letters and supposedly started working on his essay. Oh and he retook the SAT (3rd and final time) last Saturday, and although he didn’t study, he said he felt that he did better than the last time, which was a significant improvement over his first take. I guess we’ll see, but his score was already pretty good during his 2nd take.
I really wish he were further along than he seems to be, but his schedule has been very busy lately so there’s only so much gentle nudging I can do. Besides college apps, he is getting started on his Eagle project and also on the required service hours for his school (needed in order to graduate!). He clearly tends to be a last minute kid. Thankfully his sister (2030) is very much a type A planner, so hoping that the process for her will be easier. Or it may be a different kind of challenge, since she’s such a perfectionist! ![]()
Need to get on D27’s case, I know 3 of her schools have a 10/15 EA date. I don’t want her to wait to the last minute to click submit.
