Do any of you have parents who think your capabilities and intelligence go beyond what they really are?

I hate it. So much

Do any of you have parents who think your capabilities and intelligence go beyond what they really are?

I hate it. So much

what’s the problem with your parents thinking the best of you?

My parents do the opposite… I feel like I have to succeed so that I can prove them wrong, instead of proving them right. Let your parents think of you what they will.

hmm yeah. I hate hearing I’m smart or anything like that. A lot of the people who say so and so is really intelligent (like some of our parents) have comparatively underdeveloped understandings of intelligence. Like they wouldn’t be able to distinguish between the upper percentiles or anything like that.

I just try to remember that what they mean by intelligence is not what I mean by it, but that that difference is okay. They use it how they want to use it, and I will use it how I want to use it. When I get annoyed is when I make the mistake of thinking the other person is the one misusing it.

My parents have trouble realizing that I’m a big fish in a small pond.

It’s actually the opposite situation for me. Personally, I’ll never get to hear the end of my mom’s nagging ;)
