First off, please talk to your parents about this. Is it your dream to go there? Even if it is, I encourage you to talk with them about the great aspects of another school. If you don’t get in, you know that, for whatever reason, it’s just not the school for you.

As for your chances, you’re obviously a stellar student. I’m curious as to what your “hook” is, because I’m pretty sure a LOT of applicants have many of the same credentials, but another 300 hours of service or ten more amazing awards or ALL ap classes. I hope you can stand out as an individual and express your voice! What are you passionate about? What makes you stay up at night just waiting to work on?

Hope this helps. PM me with any questions about essays, I’ll be glad to help!

oh don’t be scared. i think you have a better shot than i do. i guess i just want objectivity, so i’ll give it to everyone else. good luck, man, we all need it!

as the mom of an african american male who attends stanford, i will say that if your recommendations are glowing, your essays are reasonable, and there is leadership in some of your activities, you will most likely get in as well as be accepted at other top schools. the C in calculus will hurt you if it looks like you aren’t trying. there just aren’t that many black kids who are both national merit and national achievement.

the question will be for you when all is said and done… do you want to go to stanford?

what school will be best serve your needs.

prestige isn’t a good enough reason to attend a school.

and you need to talk to your parents. they need to understand that any top school only accepts about 25% of the kids with your sat scores. being an urm helps but it isn’t a guarantee.

As a parent, I would say that parents need to control themselves during this harrowing process and not make wild and undoubtedly empty threats … :)

I remember last year, when a girl posed as a student all year long, she even snuck into the dorms at night and attended classes because she was afraid of her parents.

But it’s not like that. They don’t mean what they say, Ailey’s right, it’s very much an empty threat.

You’re a black male with a 2300 on the SAT, you attend a magnet school, you’re from an underrepresented state, and you have good ECs and honors/awards. I’d say you have a pretty good shot.
