Parents, your usernames are boring...

I know this is a college website and all, but you could have put some more effort in than say “DCmom” or whatnot (I made that one up but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s real). This isn’t really a jab at anyone, just some light-hearted poking fun.

And if you must ask, my username means nothing. It just sounds cool.

EDIT: Turns out there are 4 different “DCmom” usernames on this board.

Maybe our words are so profound and our personalities so sparkling, that the names are of less import. ‘A rose by any other name…’

(yr right, mine bores me to tears, but am stuck with it)

i like mine - it could have more than one meaning - you figure it out…don’t care if you think it’s boring or not. :)

Hah! If you think my USERNAME is boring, you should hear my lectures!

I purposely kept “Mom” out of the username so as to not embarrass my daughter, who also posts in the same threads as I. It will be interesting to see if anyone can figure out our relationship based on our responses. :)

QuantMech: hahahahaha!

Guilty as charged. Mine is lousy! Guess I wasn’t feeling very clever at the time.

I’ve considered changing, but don’t think CC allows it.

I would guess that for many people, one of the more enjoyable things about interacting on anonymous internet boards is creating a certain mystique about yourself just by your username while still maintaining your anonymity; these might be names that tell little or nothing about what the name’s owner is really like, or might even suggest misleading, exaggerated or untrue things about the real person. There is no way for others to tell just from a username.

Because of the particular focus of this board, however, I think many of us mom’s (and dad’s) are merely trying to cut through the normal anonymity of internet boards by creating a quick and simple method of connecting with others and establishing immediate bonds that might otherwise take much longer to develop (is this a male or female? A student or parent? How should I really interpret their words?) It’s not like I would ever use (or want to use) my “mom” username on many other boards…

So, yeah, here we are being who we are (parents), and, with our usernames, taking pride in what we hope we do best - even though some might call it boring! ;)

When a lot of us signed on, we didn’t realize we were going to be here for life and would have a new world of friends. I actually had to change my name fairly early on because it was even more identifying than the one I have now. If we knew we were “marrying” this forum, more of us would have chosen different names.

What an interesting choice of words, because although the OP doesn’t think so, his/her screen name does have a meaning. In Yiddish, an *afruff/I is when a prospective groom is called up to say the blessings over the Torah a few days before his wedding!

I agree, one day you are lurking on the board and want to make a post. Now you have to choose a username…what? The stress of choosing a name that fits you, that expresses your personality, AND is something you can remember. Haha, I have a generic username I use for lots of online things which is totally boring. Then I have several usernames and pw’s at work, as well as ones for other boards. It can be crazy remembering all!!

Are you kidding - I spent weeks selecting my screen name. (not)

How dare some Internet waif come sulking in and dis carefully selected and articulated screen names.

I chose my user name in a moment of hysterical joy (S was accepted ED at first choice). And most of the time, the name fits, except for those occasional posts when I’m really cranky. So – what, I should change my user name to ReallyCranky just for those occasions?

Of course, both “cool” and “boring” are in the eyes of the beholder. Some people might feel that a username that has no apparent meaning and is merely a random collection of letters/syllables and numbers is…well, as “boring” as a randomly assigned phone number or license plate number!

[and not that the OP probably cares, but I keep thinking of “aflack” when I see “afruff” - and the duck in the insurance commercials! Odd, how the brains of anonymous strangers work… ]

didgeridoodad was already taken.

He was???

I’m pretty satisfied with my Grateful Dead reference.

“Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.”
Jerry Garcia

And here I thought this was a step up from what I use on most other boards.

I wanted something that was totally nonidentifying, but, yeah, I guess I could have been more clever about it. But I agree with poster who said we didn’t know we’d live on here and should have put more forethought into it.

I love my name.
Meanwhile, I have better things to do here than rate other users’ names. :)

LMAO funny thread

:smiles innocently:
