<p>Guilty. I hate my username which I just stole from another name I had used online. I had no idea that people would have fun names and so forth. I would happily change it except that I’ve posted so much under this name that I feel I would lose the trail I’ve created here over time. And…I don’t even know how I would go about changing it.</p>

<p>BTW, I saw a reference to your screen name in a NYT article a while back, one that defined a kluge as a clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem, particularly dealing with computer programming. Made me wonder why you picked it since your posts are hardly clumsy.</p>
<p>VeryHappy, you and I chose our names the same way! I, too, was ecstatic when my S was admitted to his first choice school SCEA. I love my username – better glad than sad, mad or bad.</p>
<p>Like Thumper I use the same name at various places, and I rather enjoy the alter-identity. I have had to tell a few professional contacts what it is, when I refer people to resources I have, and that gives some pause, as well as some teasing. </p>
<p>While I am appreciative of the limitations of the relatively small range of names most of us knew in school and amongst acquaintances, it has been a challenge for me to latch onto the more adventuresome and/or non-western culturally derived names. CC’s special names is a good exercise in thinking outside the norm names. It would be great if (fiction) books would give a list of characters and relationships at the beginning as a reference, because I get easily confused. The search function at CC helps solve that issue to keep track of who is who and what to remember about each.</p>

<p>Momof2inca, actually, I think the original meaning of “kluge” was a clumsy but effective mechanical or hardware workaround. The computer programming equivalent is a “kludge.” Or sometimes it’s the other way around. It rhymes with “huge” except when spelled “kludge” in which case it sometimes rhymes with “fudge.” A kluge is never elegant, but occasionally functional, except in the Navy, in which case, it only works on dry land. I have a lot of fondness for both the term and the concept, having modified lots of devices to perform (poorly) some task I needed done, but for which the “right” part was either unavailable, too expensive, or or simply unknown to me. I like to build things but rarely have the time, money or attention span to do it the right way, so I resort to kluges a lot.</p>

<p>mimk6: “Threads” means how many threads you have started. “Posts” means how many posts you have made overall, either on threads you started or on those started by others.</p>
