payment for guests to Orientation

Uh … this is not billable to financial aid, I assume? Will my family need to send a check?

All my family’s income is tied up for the trip to Orientation itself now, on top of living expenses and tuition; my employer hasn’t paid me (nor my mother’s employer to my mother) yet, so 90 dollars for two guests is quite a pain… if there is a way to pay it later that would be great.

YOU NEED TO START CALLING THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

Dean J has repeated this, with others, many times. Financial Aid issues are different for everyone, every year. CC people cannot help you. If you just take the three minutes to call and ask, it would fix everything.

By the way: I know it must be hard living with low income. But, many things will be covered by UVA and outside scholarships for you over the years. There are others out there whose parents make just enough, or have assets that make up for a lower income, to get nothing from the school, and barely anything in subsidized loans, and have to pay for everything out of their pocket. It is an incredible strain on their pocket, especially with multiple kids. They do not receive any help on things like the cost of parents attending orientation, dining plans, housing, basic needs, etc. Also, many scholarships are either “you need to be a rocket scientist or be in need” and it’s difficult to receive that type of help. Many of us work summer jobs as well to help out with books and other stuff so our parents can save a little extra. So, just remember, there are others out there that are in tight positions and it’s not always appropriate to be pointing out your condition whenever you can without thinking others may be as stretched as you. UVA is not all rich snobs or UVAcess recipients. Many are middle-income, just trying to get a cheap, instate education that happens to be at a great school.

I don’t think anyone at CC has any influence over this, you should contact someone running orientation to see what they say.

Well yes, it’s just that my family starts driving TOMORROW and it would be nice to know it in advance, because the financial aid office is closed now.

I’ve been working nearly every day for the past four weeks and when I get out, everyone is usually closed. :{

It’s rather inconvenient to have to make out-of-state calls every time for some little request or concern … and I know many others must be in my position.

Anyway, yeah, I’ll probably call on the way down tomorrow … it’s just that if I have to send it by mail, it’s better to send it tonight?

I know I’m not in a unique position and I’m sorry if I came off that way, shoebox. Actually my concern was more of the lines of, “I’m a clueless OOS student who doesn’t have a chance to call long-distance very often within the appropriate times – can I get some preliminary advice on what most other people do in my situation?”

That’s really my intention when I ask questions on this forum …

You might be able to give them the check there. They might not even care. Frankly, you should have taken care of this weeks ago if you thought it was an issue. Even snail mail would have been ok…the Orientation office is very much on top of their game. Either way, I wouldn’t mail it at this point. Just ask them what to do once you arrive.

My d (a freshman in high school at the time) decided to go to her brother’s orientation with me at the last minute. We had no trouble paying at the time of registration. However, if they don’t want to eat meals at the dining hall, no one was checking to see if they were registered at the parent programs.
