I think I’ve fallen in love with Sisters. And Trixie–need I say more?
Am I the only one who thinks Sister Monica Joan has had more lucid moments in the last season or two than what she had in the early years? I agree that this was another excellent episode. So many touching moments. Every episode from this series seems to outdo the ones before it. I’m so happy to see Trixie find a potential beau.
One of my favorite episodes. Made me cry and made me laugh. How did they manage so many wonderful stories in just 50 minutes.
I’m glad Trixie has a potential new boyfriend. The past few seasons have been hard on her, especially seeing Barbara end up with the minister, even though she was the one who broke it off. She’s earned some good karma.
@2VU0609, you are not alone! Especially this last episode, I thought Sister Monica Joan showed great insight and coherency. In earlier seasons, there were several plot lines featuring her prominently. I wonder if, as the writers have focused on younger staff, they have given Sr Monica Joan a new role as commentator emphasizing her distinctive perspective?
Glad they repeat in our area PBS Monday late night - I now set up to record. I thought I had it set up already…had a busy few days…
I just watched the latest episode on line. Loved the line, “I’m of the mind that two opinions are better than one, especially if one of them is my own.”
I was hoping Reggie was going to become a regular, but I’m glad he’s found a place where he can thrive.
I have never tried the closed captions before but thought I’d turn them on to see if I was missing anything. But when I hit a button that says CC on my TV remote, it said “captions not available.” I didn’t see anything on the cable remote that does captions. Is there a usual way to turn these on?
@Barbalot - on my remote, I hit the * button to turn on CC. It’s a toggle to on or off. But since remotes vary widely, who knows!
They did much better with the closed captioning last night.
I liked the Reggie character too - one of the very lucky few people with Down syndrome of that era who wasn’t institutionalized as a matter of course.
On a little bit of a tangent, anyone else watching Home Fires? I liked the first season and am loving the second season. The problem is, they didn’t commission a third season and there is only one episode left for Masterpiece to air. I feel distraught that I am going to be left hanging on so many story lines.
^^^ Yes, I’m watching and enjoying Season 2 more than the first year. Thanks for the warning, I didn’t know we had only one more episode. It’s not unusual for the Brits to leave things hanging so they can return in later years. Not a system I like. Funny how I want all those fictional situations resolved and won’t accept my own conclusions.
I’ve loved both seasons of “Home Fires” and am just heartbroken ITV didn’t renew it for a third. I’m still holding out hope that all those petitions across the pond (and the fact that Masterpiece picked it up) will earn it one more season.
And I have to say, some of the men they cast in “Home Fires” are among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen on television.- like “soap opera pretty” men.
For the English major/nerds out there: Ed Stoppard (Dr. Will Campbell) is the playwright Tom Stoppard’s son. I got to see Ed in the most marvelous production of his father’s “Arcadia” in London about eight years ago, quite by chance. Samantha Bond (Frances Barden/Lady Rosamund from “Downton Abbey”) was in it too, as was a very young Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley from DA). After seeing that I told myself I could die a happy woman!

Pat ( abused wife) on Home Fires is played by the same actress who plays Einstein’s mother on Genius, which I’m enjoying quite a bit. It’s on the National Geographic Channel. The actress’s name is Claire Rushbrook.
She seems better suited to to role of Einsteins mother. She seems too old and matronly to be convincing as a gal that the dashing Czech officer falls for.
^^ That’s what I love about Pat, though. She has qualities that transcend the superficial. Even the plain and chubby deserve love! And the actors who portray them are the same age (mid-40s).
The Homefires character/actress that I like is Steph the stalwart farmer. As I recall that same actress played one of the minor housemaids on Downton Abbey.
On another PBS tangent, Masterpiece has announced that they have commissioned the production of Little Women as a series. My favorite childhood book and one of my top ten ever. Something to look forward to since we may never know how Home Fires should/would end.
And speaking of Home Fires, even though the series was cancelled, the series creator is writing four novels to continue telling the story. The first book will be available in July!
