Penn State Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

Thank you! Her major is Geobiology.

For Housing, look into the LLCs and on the form list them in order of preference.

LLCs

Hers would be Irvin Hall - excellent location and dining hall, cool building.
Irvin Hall – Home of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Living Learning Community (site under construction but some elements are visible already).

Beside Irvin, North and South residence areas are the best for comfortƗlocation. Renovated East Halls are now comfortable - gone are the days when furniture was fixed to the floor or 1970s common showers :tada:- but they’re far and students often need to wait for the shuttle+you have to be careful because it’s all freshmen being away from home for the first time so it’s often not conducive to studying.
ollock is well-located but hasn’t been renovated yet so should be cheaper relatively speaking - it’s barebones but many generations have survived.

(Unless she’s into partying every night -NOT recommended- I wouldn’t recommend a random East Hall -I would enquire about a building with a Quiet floor or look into LLCs. 4,000 freshmen thrown together make for a rowdy, imaginative bunch, especially the first few weeks. Freshmen realize at some point they need to buckle down but for those aiming for specific majors with 3+ GPA requirements it may be too late. And who wants the smell of vomit? There are famously parties Th-Sat about everywhere, but IMHO Quiet floors or LLCs are the way to go to have fun without being overwhelmed.
Paterno Fellow Aspirants and Schreyer students have a quiet/sound proof study room in South.)

Guys, I applied on December 23rd yet still haven’t heard back from Penn State (no updates at all). Is this normal?? Everyone I know has already received an update on their admission status, and it’s making me quite nervous

For context, I am an international student (so OOS?) who originally applied for CS but then changed my major to Bioengineering ~8 weeks ago, on January 16th. Any insights??

It means they started reviewing your application after the January decisions were out.
Does your portal show that everything was received and your app is complete?
Email Admissions to ask if something is missing.
All in all it’s only been a month since applications in your group (not EA not priority) have been reviewed.

That’s really unfortunate :/.
I know of some people who applied in January and got their decisions already…

Anyway, it did say that everything was complete and that my application was currently under review, but the portal said it was incomplete (even though everything was submitted) up until two or three weeks ago.

I’ll try shooting them an email, thanks! :).

Then it means your application started to get processed 2-3 weeks ago. :crossed_fingers:
It’s quite possible it was considered submitted on Jan 16 only.

That’s actually insane. At this point, penn state might be the last decision I receive…

Thank you for the insight, though!

Thank you!!!

My son received an email about financial aid for Penn State (sent at 7:25am this morning), and then he found a decision in the portal for admission to the 2+2 program at the Erie/Behrand campus.

I think you’re OOS - what major and was it for a first request or a reconsideration decision? Had he checked Summer Start (and would he be willing to do that?)
For an OOS applicant, Behrend is a full-fledged campus but nothing they couldn’t have instate at a regional campus at much lower cost. IMHO it’s not worth it unless he’s been admitted nowhere else and even in that case, assuming it’d affordable, if it wasn’t a reconsideration request, if you share stats and majors of interest I can suggest an alternate major you could try for at UP.

It was a first request and for Electrical Engineering. Penn State was the last school he had applied for, only because I suggested it at the last minute. We are from SoCal, so I believe he would prefer to stay in SoCal, for which he has some options, although he is also considering colleges in Washington and Texas. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for your kind offer of suggestions.

If he has instate options in SoCal, then congratulations :tada: on the Behrend admission but unless there’s some other reason, I don’t think Behrend is better than CSUs. EE is hard enough, he should be at a college he’s comfortable at.

Do you know what the chances are of getting into an LLC? My son is Agribusiness and is interested in BASH and Earth House.

You can list your preferences and list the 2 LLCs as priorities. The process was changed for this year with just one date by which to register with HFS, rather than prioritizing whoever deposits first so it’s likely to alter the way it’s worked. Make sure to deposit well before the deadline in case something isn’t processed right (giving you time to fix things) and you should be okay.

One more question. Will they find out if they are accepted into an LLC before housing assignments come out? Based on old posts it looks like people had to confirm their interest in the spot in May.

I’m sorry, I have no idea.
Someone else may?

My daughter received an email yesterday offering a 1+3 acceptance. She was on the waitlist. I’m familiar with the 2+2, but not a 1+3. Is this a standard acceptance if you’re wait listed?

It’s something they’ve been doing when UP is overtaxed (except for specific majors that have specialized courses, for which it’s the only possibility).
Are you instate or OOS?
What major?
Was there a scholarship offer along with it?
Is PSU affordable?
Where else did she get in?

Hi and thx! We’re OOS in NJ, about 45 minutes from the Abington campus. She applied DUS and will likely end up with a major that falls broadly within therapy or counseling. She’s mentioned SLP, but really, she doesn’t know. She works five days a week at pre-k after school and loves it, so a field working with children is probably likely.

Last night, she received an email confirmation from an AO removing her from the waitlist and placing her in the 1+3. Her official decision will be posted to the portal next week. So, I have no idea about scholarship offers. But I’m guessing from what I have seen on CC that it’s unlikely. Years 2-4 at PSU would be the most expensive of her options. We could swing it, but it’s more than we want to spend.

She also got in at Rowan, Scranton, Widener, Ramapo, St. Joe’s (Philly), Siena, Montclair, and others with good to great merit offers. After visiting some schools, her preference has shifted from wanting a very large campus (PSU, Rutgers NB) to a more manageable one. But she’s excited about the 1+3, so we’ll see.

She was waitlisted at Rutgers NB; in at RU Camden with great merit and Honors College, but she’s not interested.

Scranton is a terrific college! If it’s more affordable than PSU I’d totally take it :clap:

Rowan (did she get Honors there?) and St Joe’s would be my next picks.

I guess the benefit of the 1+3 formula is that the first year is on a small campus where it’s possible to adjust to a new life, autonomy, course pace, college course rigor … and when you’re ready to do so and in fact bored with the small campus you start on the large one. That being said, Abington is a suitcase campus, kids go home (often to Philly or NJ) on weekends. If she were to attend, I’d pick Harrisburg or Altoona. Finally, a benefit would be the large number of majors for her interests, between HFS, SLP,CSD, and others in HHD, and the College of Education (though I’m sure Rowan has a lot of them too).
