🐾 Penn State 🐾 Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

At that point, students can decide they’re better off doing 2+2 and keeping their chance for Smeal instead of getting crushed in weed out pre-reqs, especially if they got the branch campus they wanted. Or they can ask for reconsideration for another major they’re interested in, from Health Management to Human Resources&Labor Relations to ETI depending on their strengths.

My student is still waiting to hear from Smeal. Stats are above the 75% mark but we are OOS. Sincerely, why would an OOS student accept 2+2? I think it makes a lot of sense for Penn State want to distribute high achievers among their lesser known/regarded campuses (no disrespect intended). I’m just not sure what is in it for OOS students? Tuition is still very high and there are solid and more traditional college experiences elsewhere that don’t require a transfer.

They don’t - very rarely. For OOS, 2+2 is a polite denial (fucntionally) with very few exceptions.

Anyone hear from Industrial Engineering yet?

As you say, there’s not much in it for OOS students so they typically don’t attend branch campuses: they can have a better experience for less cost at their own flagship/branches or residential directionals (if they didn’t get into their flagship).
If they really want to attend UP, they can always ask for reconsideration for a new, less competitive major, and/or add they’re okay starting summer session.

I don’t know. I suppose it’s a personal decision for each student.

I think the branches would be a better fit or option if Penn State would only require one year at a branch.

Anyone hear from Smeal over the past few days? It seems so quiet.

We have not heard on Smeal. Hoping this week and certainly hoping not Christmas week, the suspense is too much!!! At this point I am thinking my son’s best path is with the summer start, which he checked off as an option. He is just under 1400 SAT, which i am totally guessing on, but is how I am rationalizing why he has not been in the accepted batch yet.

My daughter went test optional but has a high GPA, which I’m hoping is good enough. It seems that the few people whom I’ve heard received acceptances at Smeal were super high stats (GPA and scores). On the other hand, I also haven’t heard too many people who have heard back, which gives me hope. Maybe there will be a big wave coming soon.

So stressful. My daughter’s taking the same strategy for poli sci. I saw a kid posting on another site that he’d been rejected so I guess some rejections are going out too. PSU is feeling like the canary in the coal mine since it’s one of the first top schools to be releasing results. But our kids are still in the game !!!

Good luck!!

Do you mind sharing her stats? Mine is still waiting

Hopefully it will not be a long wait! My daughter has a 4.2W GPA and applied test optional.

Congrats.
Could you share applicant stats? OOS/Instate?
Had you applied for Summer Start or Summer Optional as well?

Would your child ask for reconsideration for another major (such as Energy Finance or Agribusiness, Data Science, ETI…) or does 2+2 seem a better option?
