Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

do you think it is too late to ask for DUS, UP Fall start for someone who got Smeal + summer? would the first offer/decision be lost if the DUS option @ UP with fall start doesn’t come through?

If your request for reconsideration falls through, your original offer stands.

Not sure if they looked further, but since she was originally deferred: she did have a great essay that related to major, ECs that related directly to major, and a private tour/interview this summer at Bellisario.

Hello, my son got into Altoona and got the 2+2 plan for DUS. Should we ask for reconsideration and switch to the college of IST. He really wants university park, and was first going to try for smeal but switched to DUS. He now wants to study Cybersecurity.

He did rolling admission and submitted his application mid November.

OOS / TO / DUS (with Summer) for UP campus was deferred from EA…

"Your application and required materials have been received, and your final admission decision will be posted by January 31, 2024. No additional action is required at this time. "

Q: Any value in sending in 7th semester grades or updating SRAR even though not being requested?
“by” 31 JAN it says… Does anyone have info on last year’s release date or process?

Penn State doesn’t consider senior year grades in the admission process. Some decisions may come before Jan. 31 but all deferred students should hear by Jan. 31.

Cybersecurity is capacity-controlled so I’m not sure it’ll be easier than DUS, but you can always try that+summer start, especially if he has As in Precalculus/honors, is taking Calculus, and has taken AP CS Principles or other broad CS courses.

You can always send 1st semester senior grades just to reassure yourself you’ve done everything possible but I don’t think it’ll be considered.

It is not too late, but summer is a great option at UP as well. If you ask for reconsideration and they deny you, the original offer will still stand.

Thanks ! good to know… PSU/ WISCO / UMICH this FRI (26th) maybe?

I (parent) just received an email from PSU asking for SSN and FAFSA. (Btw, they did say not to email the SSN, but to enter it through the portal).

Have any other parents received this email? D24 was just admitted. PSU has never emailed me anything, and I didn’t realize they had my contact info.

What does “capacity-controlled” mean for the major? Thanks

@VFF001 capacity controlled means there are requirements (usually called ETM or ‘entrance to major’) to be ‘in’ that major.

Those ETMs usually include:

  • a prescribed set of pre-reqs
  • a GPA requirement
  • a specific credit window (minimum/maximum number of credits)

Penn State differs slightly from other schools in that if you meet ALL of the criteria above, you are in the major. It isn’t “we take the top 100 and you must meet the minimum to even be considered, but you can be bumped from the major if you aren’t in the top 100”.

But, those things are different depending on an intended major.

What major are you considering? We can give better advice knowing that (ie. business vs. engineering vs. advertising, etc.)

Never received anything like that! I would not respond to that and call psu tomorrow. Sounds like phishing to me.

As explained above, it simply means students must complete certain courses with a C or higher and have a specific GPA (From 2.6 to 3.5 – generally around a B-/B). All students who meet the requirements are in, there’s no competition between them, but you can’t become an Engineer with a D in Freshman Physics, you can’t major in communication with a D in Freshman English, and you can’t major in Cybersecurity with a D in Intro to Cybersecurity.

He emailed admissions asking to be reconsidered for the college of IST and wants to major in IST or Cyber. He’s taken precalc, trig, AP CSP, and in Applied Calc and advanced information systems right now. He can’t do summer start though.

He finished AP CSP with a B+ and a 4 on the exam. Pre Calc and trig with an A. Applied Calc has an A right now.

Looking ahead, but does anyone know how long the NSOs (new student orientations) typically are? Do the students stay overnight on campus? I’ve tried to figure out from the website, and searched CC … Thanks!
