Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

You got an interview for the honors college?

Ask for summer and ask for a less competitive major. What are you interested in? The senior members and forum moderator/ champion have offered some awesome advice. Read through this thread.

If you add all the Honors, AP, postAP, IB, DE classes, how many did you take over 4 years?
What’s your highest math and foreign language levels?
Is your unweighted GPA below 3.5? In the 3.0-3.5 range? Weighted 3.5-3.6?

In any case:
Yes, definitely remove premed.
Indicate you’d like to start in the Summer and participate in the Paterno Scholar Aspirant LEAP if you’re not admitted to Schreyer (mention you were interviewed for Schreyer and what date).
If you applied to the Psych BS you can try applying to the Psych BA but your odds aren’t good since its the same major, woeth it only if you want to roll the dice and have a very strongmath background (BA and BS are the same except 2 electives in the BA program are quantitative courses for thr BS). You could also apply to BA GLIS/Health&Environment and a minor using your HS foreign language. You could also apply to Human Development&Family Studies in thr HHD college.

Are there any hints that the request
For campus has gone through? Or we just wait for portal update? I feel like we’re just waiting in the wind over here haha

Has your daughter called admissions to verify that they received the request for reconsideration? Did she request a change of major, campus, and/or semester?

The major is changed on her portal - which we requested. But it still says they are
Reviewing and will post update when ready. This was in hopes of not doing the 2+2! We figured it was worth a shot. If it doesn’t work out she has other great options, but wanted to try!

I think at this point she will just have to be patient and wait until she receives an update on the portal - either accepting her to a new major at UP or affirming the original 2+2 decision. Hopefully this will occur by the end of the month.

What are the “easy” majors for admission at UP when requesting a reconsideration after a 2/2 acceptance - my son will be requesting summer as well

Less competitive colleges include Agriculture, Education, and HHD (Health and Human Development). However, there are some majors in these colleges that are more competitive than others. And there are some less common majors in Liberal Arts that are probably less competitive. What major did your son apply for? What are his stats (UW/W GPA, SAT/ACT)? What other majors would he be interested in? Has he looked through the long list of PSU majors?

My sat score was 1410 and my GPA is 3.3 unweighted (our school does not show weighted GPAs). I would like to note my GPA is only on the lower end due to my freshman and sophomore years in which I was having mental health issues however my grades were pretty good in junior and now senior year. I also go to a really good private school in which the rigor is incredibly high as it is a college prep school.

I am really good at writing essays so my application was really nice. I can definitely remove pre-med and ask to be reconsidered I just don’t know what that whole process looks like. Who should I be emailing and what should I be asking for? I can change to Human Development and Family Studies that sounds like a good major but I just don’t really know how this process works.

Yes I did do an interview on zoom in Mid-December

That’s a good sign!

(Quoting from an earlier post by @Luvmykids1 )

“Draft an email to admissions, admissions@psu.edu. In the body of the email, put applicant name, psu id, and explain you want a reconsideration for another major. Make sure it is a major less competitive than the one you originally had.”

Also add that you want to be considered for summer.

Everyone who applied to Schreyer by Nov. 1 was offered an interview - it’s good that you feel it went well. Part of the Schreyer admissions process is a deep dive into your transcript, so hopefully your last two years will make up for the first two years.

While @MYOS1634 made a good suggestion of alternate majors, be careful. Some of the colleges are onto the game. For example, if you have no education-oriented activities - working with kids, summer camp counselor, etc. switching to education is not a wise idea. BBH would make more sense if you are pre-med.

Good luck

If you say you want switch to summer+ HDFS you can mention the Schreyer intw with its date but you can’t mention Paterno Fellows and the associated LEAP because it’s reserved for Liberal Arts majors only (like GLIS). That being said BBH/HDFS makes more sense if you want to be premed.

Belated acceptance post: my daughter was accepted to UP for Psych BA major. OOS, 3.84W, public high school in Los Angeles. Test optional. 6 APs + lots of honors. Varsity swimming & waterpolo plus various other ECs. Summer camp counselor thru high school.

Does anyone know when Penn State (or any schools) present admitted students with their financial aid “package”? FAFSA is submitted but I’m wondering how long it takes until we know what, if anything, will be offered. We want to make a trip back to visit some of these schools but so much depends on the financial package

I’m not sure of the timeline, since FAFSA wasn’t available until recently. Penn State gives very little in institutional financial aid (merit or need-based) to instate or OOS students. Schreyer students get $5000/year, and a few students receive the Provost’s Award (also $5000/year). Otherwise, expect to be offered only Direct Loans unless you qualify for a Pell Grant (and for Pennsylvania students, a state grant).

There are some scholarship opportunities based on majors. Go to your majors webpage and search for scholarships there. I know engineering had some my son applied for, but the due date has passed for them. I would check the websites. :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:
