Many hospital systems want nurses with a BSN because they want to keep their Magnet Status. So, yes, you are correct, in some areas a BSN is required. But, because this is a Penn State page, I am mostly discussing nursing in Pennsylvania - and in MANY parts of PA, a BSN is not required to be a floor nurse. In Pittsburgh, the major hospital systems do not require a BSN. In other areas they might, but It is definitely required to continue for advanced practice or management.
The overall point of my post was to indicate that, in my opinion, it doesnât make financial sense to take on the debt of an OOS or expensive 4-year college when they likely wonât make any more money. All an employer cares about is that you pass the NCLEX. Of course, the same could be said for other majors as well, such as education etcâŠ
All of THAT being said, to each their own! There are many ways into nursing as a career and many avenues to take once you are a nurse. In that way, it is a terrific career.
Iâd consider switching if itâs not too late. My son applied to Smeal last year, same GPA and higher SAT and was offered a branch campus. After the decision, he asked for reconsideration for Economics (College of Liberal Arts) and was accepted.
Iâm so excited for you. Iâm curious if this mid day portal change thing has happened in the past. If so, itâs gonna lead me into a whole new frenzy on checking all day long as oppose to just 6-7 at night and 8am in the morning.
Does anyone know anything about the College of Arts and Architecture? I applied for the BArch program before Nov 1st even though the priority date is Nov 30th, but havenât heard anything back yet. I also havenât seen anyone post about getting in. I know theyâre super selective, so Iâve been really stressed about it since Penn State is my top choice school. Does anyone know the usual timeline to get a decision back?
The timeline is âby Dec24â. Thereâs no way to tell when the team in charge of BArch will get to your application. Hang in there. 2 more weeks and youâll know.
Hopefully youâre in and itâs affordable-what are your backups and have you run the NPC on them? (If not, thatâs a way to keep busy )
Historically, as it has gotten closer to the deadlines, the portal has been updated more than once a day. In the days before the deadline, itâs been known to update 4 or 5 times a day. I wouldnât make yourself crazy about it though!
There are deferrals. Typically students arenât denied but offered their 2nd choice campus or, if that college+major are âfullâ already or the applicant just doesnât have the stats theyâre offered a less desirable campus close to where they live.
Oh lord. Ok thank you. Will definitely need to take up yoga or meditation the next two weeks. I know from the past, Dec 10-15 were lots of smeal decisions. Hopefully they will start dropping soon.
Any insight into how hard it is to get actual engineering classes if you are DUS? From looking at the sequence, it appears they start right in the âdeepâ of courses. If I change his application to DUS, I am pretty sure his stats should get him to Main, but I am worried about him getting the classes he wants without him ending up having to spend an extra semester. Any thoughts?
There is no difference getting intro engineering classes as DUS or âpre-maj ENGRâ. There are typically pre-reqs that have to be met and they can be met from DUS or âpre-maj ENGRâ.
DM me and I can walk you through the criteria, classes, etc.
I speak from experience.
Having said that, there are many kids who opt for an extra semester or year because they lightened their load or studied abroad or whatever. The flip side is that I know many in a 5 yr program that work their masters into the standard 5 yrs by taking extra classes.
