Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

I got into the usual portal after a couple of tries with it loading. Then I tried clicking the TO navigation button but all it would do is thing. I could click everything else in the navigation.

Where do you submit for reconsideration? And where do you enter DOB is on the application portal or lion path ?

The college of IST at Penn State is very well regarded - so no worries there. It will be easier for your son to switch from Data Science to one of the other majors in IST than the other way around, because Data Science requires Calc I and II and the others do not. But still take a look at the entry to major requirements for each major so that you can choose classes that might fit both majors while he decides.
For what it’s worth - my daughter was a biological anthropology major with a minor in IST for two full years and decided at the end of sophomore year that she wanted something more business and technical. She loaded up on entry to major classes over one summer and now at the end of junior year, she is officially IN her major and will graduate on time. Not all majors work like this and many IST majors are controlled with credit windows. Enterprise Tech isn’t because it’s a newer, lesser known major - but what she was told is that they expect to make it controlled in the future.

DUS Is the Division of Undergraduate Studies
or more simply, Penn State’s undecided major. Because no one is IN a major at Penn State until they complete entry to major requirements, DUS allows students to work towards ANY non direct entry major and graduate on time.

You are asking for a reconsideration so it’s considered a new application. You’d need to check summer again for this new reconsideration.

Brandywine is in a nice area near Philly but is very commuter (~1,000 students, 200-250 live on campus)- would she be commuting from home (20mn max each way is best if driving or use SEPTA) or living in the (nice) Dorm.

My daughter got 2/2 for Altoona, not the summer program she hoped for
emailed them yesterday to change to undecided (from communications) and they told her since she got the 2/2 it was “done” (as opposed to just satellite?") Told her they had a ton of kids already filling spots. Not sure how accurate that is, but we have a very sad deflated child saying “we are
NOT”. :frowning:

Thank you! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Look at the less-requested majors and call to be reconsidered for that+summer. You never know.
(Collunications arts&sciences would make aense, for instance).
DUS might be nearly full or they’re keeping DUS spots open
or the person who answered the phone made a mistake?

how do we find the less requested majors

They did not give me any specifics. Just said I had been switched. I emailed back asking for confirmation on when I would receive a decision.

The problem is that communications and DUS will have similar admission difficulty. So changing from one to the other is likely not going to change the decision. So I believe what they are saying is that the decision of a 2+2 isn’t going to change. 2+2 admits get reconsidered all of the time, but for it to make a difference, it would need to be a significant change to the application.

Your daughter’s stats are in line with the average GPA of accepted students, but without knowing her high school profile, weighting scale etc - it’s impossible to tell. That’s why comparing GPA’s on sites like this is nearly impossible.

Ok please let me know. I might switch my son out too.

I believe she emailed (fortunately she is quite independent/determined) and did this on her own accord. She did apply for summer. I’m trying to go with the “everyone ends up where they’re supposed to be” mentality but 2 rejections in a row and 2 more decisions looming this week, and it’s easy to feel defeated

Yes
I think she is leaning towards commuting
only 20 mins door to door
then xfer to main after 2nd year
so many good options

Yep, I am still being considered for early action. I highly recommend doing it for your son.

anyone know why comms seems to be taking the longest?

Look at what I posted upthread (around post 1324).

There are literally over ONE HUNDRED majors at Penn State and most applicants apply to a handful: Something in Smeal or COE or biology
mostly because they don’t know better.
Time to start digging!
For instance, look at BBH (a major med schools consider more legit than “premed” because they want students able to handle the premed pre-reqs AND a solid major), then look at all the majors and minors HHD offer: does anything appeal to you?
Look at the CLA: MANY options there, too.

You can also post

  • your academic strengths/weaknesses (“A in precalc H, Calc AB and BC
but struggled to get a B in English Honors and didn’t take AP Humanities/Social science”
etc) and/or favorite subjects in HS and/or activities (working with little kids, being a docent at a museum, your gardening/landscaping job, class president ) you enjoyed
    +
  • major(s) you were interested in
    +
  • whether you’d already checked summer (directly or only if not Fall) if you’re able to pay for summer:sleepy:
    +
  • look at offerings inside IST, Earth&Mineral Science, CLA, Ag, HHD, Comm
(Education ONLY if you have volunteered with kids and wouldn’t mind being a teacher) : What sounds interesting?
    ===>
We can try and suggest majors but you may find some all on your own :hugs:

Patiently (or maybe becoming impatient) awaiting here. We are OOS and went test optional.

@jlhpsu Would Harrisburg be a good satellite branch for Engg for 2+2?
The 2+2 type of option at PSU is also at Texas A&M with their Engg Pathways program (more like 1+3 or 1.5 +2.5). The same benefits (smaller classes, more face time with profs, easier transition from HS) are cited there as well.
