Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

I have a friend whose son was not accepted at main campus for Smeal. He was offered Harrisburg. About 2 days ago.

Do you know his stats by any chance?

Psychology! 3.979 UW/4.032 W, 1380 SAT, 3 AP and 6 Honors, decent EC’s (posted them on the decision page as well!)

Thanks. 3.7UW but strong SAT 1530 on a competitive public school in PA, fingers crossed and hoping to hear back soon. Is it possible to change the backup campus? If so do we do it not or wait what happens and then try to work on it?

I did too!! My thought exactly!!

I think he was around a 1250 SAT, with a decent GPA. I wish I knew he was applying to Smeal, I would have told him to apply into something else. No way, UP with his stats. He is asking for reconsideration for DUS. He has a lot of good extras… has his own business on Instagram… but I don’t think they looked at that in his original evaluation.

Hi! I just logged into my portal (not accepted yet as of yesterday afternoon) & I’m getting a yellow notice box that says ā€œSorry, we are unable to retrieve your application details. Please check back later as we are working to resolve this issue.ā€ Then underneath I have an info for admitted students box. Anyone getting the same thing/know what it means? Don’t want to be too excited after the psubound thing they had the other day lol

Does PSU reject anyone? If not, and just offered 2+2 instead, how is acceptance rate determined? Also, if deferred applicant can ultimately get rejected, isn’t getting 2+2 now a bit better? Didn’t expect to see EA applicants get deferred and just wondering what’s in store for them and what that really means.

I don’t see why you can’t change your back up campus if they haven’t made a decision yet, but I’m not 100%. Call admissions tomorrow and ask.

Yours is coming.

This isn’t really about wanting a commonwealth campus, more how PSU is viewing deferred UP applicants vs 2+2 offers

That happened to my son after he was admitted… we found the letter in lionpath in the evening, but in the morning his portal showed that. Also had the admitted student info. About an hour later the letter was in the portal. Congrats!:crossed_fingers:

If they have deferred a student from EA to RD, there are a few possibilities:

  1. eventually make fall UP cut
  2. summer start at UP (if checked)
  3. accept for 2+2.

I do not believe they would defer a candidate, then outright reject them. If admissions didn’t think they had a shot at fall UP, admissions would have already accepted for 2+2.

So- being deferred - while being painful - is > 2+2 RIGHT NOW. They may still end up 2+2, but they may get UP.

I know admissions said no further information. If it were my kid, and UP was first choice, I would probably send a letter and include first quarter grades (assuming they are strong). I would want to do everything within my control to make my app stronger.

The other thing to consider is can a SAT or ACT be taken and added? Doubt timing works, but my sense (total anecdotal and total speculation) is that test scores help them make a decision. (I have a friend’s kid who got in for fall UP with an ā€œaverageā€ SAT - friends were offered summer who were TO and similar grades. One example does not a rule make, but I found interesting).

Yes, if you get 2+2 and would accept it at another branch campus (ie., Altoona/Erie/Harrisburg…) you should call and ask for reconsideration asap since those 3 fill soon. The longer you wait the longer the odds since students who wouldn’t be commuters ask for one of these 3. :crossed_fingers:

Summer will help. The 2 As in college classes are going to help too… but only 6 ā€œrigorousā€ classes out of 20-24, even with a 4.0, could result in 2+2 unless you attend a well-known rigorous school or fewer other applicants applied to psychology this year. Yours is a case a high test score (1380+) would have been useful.

He could ask to be reconsidered for Sociology, BA (+summer). :crossed_fingers:
After a semester, he can decide whether he wants to switch to sociology BS (more quantitative courses) and/or Criminology. Because criminology is under the aegis of sociology, it should be easy to take the pre-reqs for both and the 1st semester is 100% same (English 15 or 30, Foreign Language, Statistics, Soc 1, 3, or 5, and Soc 12; 2nd semester is similar enough: CAS 100, gen ed science, gen ed arts, another Soc/crim class, Foreign language if not completed 1st semester or one more quant class.)

Thanks. Your insight is appreciated. Are deferred applicants allowed to change to DUS? Would that help or just complicate things? Also, SAT and grades were submitted and well above the ā€œaverageā€ found on common data set.

You’re in! Check Lion path!!

Thank u!! just checked my portal & i’m in!!!

We are waiting for Psychology too. Still have the TO button and the error (not authorized) message when we try Lions Path.
OOS. TO. 3.93 UW, 4.3 W. 2 college courses. 2 IB courses. 4 honors. 7 AP’s. 2 Varsity sports. JV captain 2 years. 850+ volunteer hours. Top youth fundraiser for Susan G. Komen. Science Olympiad 3 years…
Fingers crossed! :crossed_fingers: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

People are going in the back door to look for an admission decision rather than waiting the extra half hour that it will take to show in the portal. Lionpath is not intended to be an admission portal and honestly should not be used as such as it overwhelms the system that ALL current PSU students use to get access to grades, finances, email, canvas, etc…

Do not worry about lionpath until new student orientation.
