So happy for your son! It must be such a relief! My son has very similar stats for Aerospace so holding out hope that a positive decision is near!

Congrats! What are his stats? If my daughter gets 2+2, she is going to ask for reconsideration to Poli sci. Still waiting on Advertising - ugh! We thought decision was coming today when status update changed on the portal around 5 pm…but guess just a glitch!

Best of luck to him!!! We just fell in love with the campus, the new facilities are incredible.

Our son’s stats were a GPA of 3.78, SAT of 1440, with APs and strong ECs. I don’t know the Poli Sci criteria, but engineering had elevated requirements. Good luck to her!!!

My daughter is In!!!

Political science.

91 UW, 96 weighted- TO

7 AP’s, 5 in APUSH, 4’s in others

Competitive public high school- OOS

So many tears, she is thrilled!!! First choice :blue_heart:

Our daughter got in!!! She is so excited! Smeal main campus, applied major finance. OOS, 3.8 gpa uw, test optional, 5 APs, AP stats but only honors calc. No institutional priority ā€œhook.ā€ Took personal finance, Econ and accounting. Very strong ECs including a selective internship at Fidelity for high school girls. Public, rigorous school outside of Boston. She’s an amazing kid with great leadership, phenomenal ECs etc but we have had our concerns with the lack of AP calc and test score. It feels amazing when you know someone sees what you see in your kid. So far, acceptances at Alabama and Fordham (great merit and selective honors business program), deferred at Clemson.

Honestly, summer would be a terrific option for your daughter. I certainly understand why she does not want to go, but here are some benefits:

  1. take a weed out course in summer - Econ 102 for example. (Micro). This is a class that becomes difficult for many kids. Summer is a perfect opportunity for a small class.

  2. get 6 credits ahead. This means she can take 12 or 14 in fall and still be on track. Don’t underestimate the transition in fall - football weekends are time suckers and kids first unstructured living can be a challenge. (This also benefits with scheduling for spring since kids choose classes based on credits and 6 may be enough to schedule a day earlier than peers).

  3. adjust to campus life - dorm living, dining halls, campus layout. This is HUGE.

  4. build relationships and a friend network.

  5. jump straight into college in summer while friends are at home getting nervous and anxious. They are so confident going into fall!

Just a few benefits I’ve found…

My son finally got a decision! Admitted to Smeal, no summer.

Hey my daughter got accepted last week and I was wondering how long it takes to get the acceptance letter in the mail? Does penn state still mail it to houses?

Hi - I know this has been asked and answered but there are so many posts to parse thru. Son got offered 2+2 Altoona. What is the appeal process and how does it work and what are the options to propose for reconsideration? Child not esp high stats and has applied to DUS. Thanks and sorry for being lazy but there are well over 2k posts here

With a 3.3 GPA and test optional, most students can expect a 2+2 admission to PSU. Did your son check the box for consideration for a summer start? Does he have any majors in mind?

Congrats!!! Stats? We are still anxiously waiting for Smeal.

Yeah not remotely surprised. He checked off summer. He applied DUS. Do you think something like Econ would be a better option? Any ideas for a kid interested in business and sports (they don’t have sports management major at UP)?

Also is 2+2 considered ā€œbetterā€ decision than deferral? Do some get just deferred and or outright rejected for EA?

My son was accepted to summer Agribusiness Management. 3.63 W and 3.5 UW. Originally interested in Smeal but thanks to this community discovered this major which he’s really excited about and is a better fit. It seems the DUS is popular and somewhat difficult to get so definitely look into alternatives for major. Good luck!!

If admitted, when is merit sent out?

We never got any acceptance letters in the mail for any of the acceptances, including PSU.

I don’t think Econ would be likely either, maybe a less popular major in Liberal Arts (Labor and Human Resources, Organizational Leadership?) or Agribusiness Management or Health Policy and Administration. Look through the list of majors in the undergraduate bulletin (link below) and see if any of the majors in Agriculture, Health and Human Development, or Liberal Arts are of interest.

I don’t think many PSU applicants get denied outright unless stats are too low for their major even at branch campuses. I could see this happening for nursing, business, engineering, and other STEM intensive majors. I think in these cases, PSU may suggest that the student request another major.

Penn state used to send out snail mail. They have changed the process though since they are now sending out emails with a portal change (that previously did not happen) - so they may not be sending snail mail anymore.

Merit won’t be until February at the earliest. But know that Penn State is typically stingy with aid. There is the Provost scholarship - or apply for schreyer?
