Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

We live across the street from GMU, so they absolutely don’t want to go there. CNU and Mary Washington don’t interest them. I’m making my peace with Penn State. And it’s only the OOS tuition that’s worrying me… they couldn’t be happier with the thought of going to Penn State, especially since reconsideration worked out.

Talked to the counselor at school today and apparently they were told by JMU that the average gpa of admitted EA applicants at JMU was 4.12. He has the rigor but boy did the 2 C’s in 8th grade screw up his transcript! Stupid covid.

I feel like an a$$ for even complaining because we’re luckier than most.

That’s a weighted GPA out of 5, probably.
If there’s no weighted GPA on his transcript, it could play against him at large public universities that don’t have time to parse it.
And of course an input and/or software mistake is always possible.

Depends on the profile and what the other major was.

Hopefully your child can get into one of Georgia publics (I’ve heard good things about Georgia State, too) and I know some private colleges like Agnes Scott have a scholarship for Zell Miller recipients🤞

She got into Kennesaw State and Georgia College but they definitely aren’t on the same level as Penn State and some of her other options but the cost difference is definitely hard to ignore.

My daughter applied EA to main campus for comp sci. Fell into the trap where her act score was sent 1 day late so she dropped to regular decision. She just got her acceptance to 2+2 (Erie)

4.1 GPA Act 34 Multiple AP courses

She would not be able to do summer session since she works at a camp over the summer. What would her options be for reconsideration? Only really wants main campus.

A major in College of IST. Data Science (Applied Science option) is likely to be the closest and she can easily take the courses required for CS that overlap (Math 140-141, CS 131-132, English 15 or 30H, plus gen eds), then if she has AB grades switch to CS (or DUS then CS).

She could also add one of these two certificates to any major

Wouldn’t applying undecided be better? Wouldnt these other majors be more competitive?

Daughter’s acceptance came during the night! Eberly School of Science Fall Start!

They’re certificates I listed FYI - they’re a cluster of courses approved by a professional organization. Not majors. Can be added to any major though.
You could apply DUS too indeed. Not sure if it’s moved to competitive category.

How hard is it to get in to a CLA major if you start Freshman year in DUS? We are attending the Admitted student day this month so hopefully we can get more information as well.

DUS is a “pivot to anything” premajor (all freshmen are premajor till they’ve passed pre-reqs). So, as long as you have ABs in your classes, you’re good to go :grinning:
Make sure to take English 15/30H and foreign language first semester (+ gen eds that can double as intro classes to majors of interest.)

For what it’s worth, my son requested reconsideration (originally accepted 2+2 Altoona) and we had received a letter saying no. We just received another letter that he has been accepted at UP, starting in the Summer! I didn’t realize they review and send separately for Fall and then Summer. Anyway, thought I’d share so others keep their eyes out!

Congrats! Can I ask what major he was accepted into?

OMG…don’t think it’s supposed to work that way. Congratulations!

Thanks for the fingers crossed hopefully we hear something soon. She does have quite a few other schools that have accepted her so she does have choices. However, PSU remains her number one, especially with her brother being a student there now. Out of curiosity, do you know if they deny her reconsideration, is that the definite last attempt at getting into UP? I am seeing a lot of reconsidered DUS getting accepted and I just hope she was not given bad information on the phone the day she called telling her to reapply for a major, not DUS. She is very persistent so I am wondering if denied again, she should just let it go…I know it states you only get one reconsideration for UP.

Sure - Health & Human Development, Recreation, Park & Tourism Management. He would like sports management ultimately.

Honestly, quite confusing. My son was really disappointed and had mentally moved to his 2nd choice already. They should advertise that a bit better because he may not accept his offer from PSU anymore.
