Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

My daughter was given 2 + 2 admission and we are now reapplying. She initially applied into the School of Education. What is her best shot for UP admission now, DUS? human development? Communication studies? Any advise would be appreciated.

Hello, I’ve been looking for an offer letter with such an offer. Would it be fine with you to share your daughter’s offer letter?

Did anyone hear from penn state today or over the weekend? Do they ever release decisions on weekends?

Hi I am an out of state applicant with a 3.5 uw 3.7w and a 1340 sat score. I have taken 6 AP/honors and wrote my essay on surviving cancer and speeches in congress. Do my ec outweigh gpa?

When did you get accepted?

No one is admitted to a major until they’ve passed specific classes - if you can’t pass Calculus you can’t major in Engineering, if you can’t pass English you can’t major in liberal arts or communication, etc. For Smeal, the requirements are extensive - calculus, English, statistics, Economics, etc. Calculus and Micro Economics are weed out. You have 2 years to complete all 8 courses (most are 1st year classes).
However it’s not competitive, if you meet the requirements you’re in.
As a Smeal premajor, you’ll have a Smeal adviser and you’ll be able to apply to Sapphire.

There is technically no direct admit. To formally get into Smeal and a specific business major, you need to earn a certain GPA in the entry to major courses. Everyone needs to do this, even those “admitted” to Smeal. The benefit for getting admitted into Smeal now is that you will get a business advisor. And every business major has a different required GPA, with finance usually being the highest, around a 3.5.

ECs don’t outweigh GPA×Rigor for PSU - That’s 2/3 of your decision. Typically a sub 3.5 GPA with fewer than 10 AP/DE/honors classes would see you be assigned to a branch campus. So you’d be borderline - what major did you apply to?
Smaller, private colleges (like Gettysburg, very strong in history and poli sci, a reach; or like Muhlenberg, Allegheny, Duquesne, St Joe’s
) would pay closer attention to your unique ECs.

Colleges of Education if she had kids-related ECs is one of the easiest colleges to get into.
Did she take a foreign language through level 4 or AP? Did she take any subject through AP and get an A or B, or a score of 4 or 5?

AFAIK around 3.5-3.6.
Did you check both Summer and Fall?

I see, thank you.
So, for now I am in Smeal but not officially in finance. Will I be told what courses I need to take and etc later to major in finance?

What do you think our chances are? We applied test optional out of state for DUS. 3.65 UW and 3.76 Weighted GPA. 3 APs and 8 Honors. She went to a small private high school and access to less APs than other schools but overall pretty good rigor. Taking honors pre Calc as a senior. She has 2 languages - one with 2 years and the other with 3. Respectable ECs and I am an alum if that matters. We also applied willing to consider Summer as well as fall. What do you think our chances for UP for both summer and fall are? We are on pins and needles here! It’s her number 1 and where she wants to go but doesn’t want to go to a branch.

okay, thank you.

She only has 3 years of a foreign language. What other college yields high/higher acceptance rates? If reapplying to DUS, will she be up against all the kids who initially wanted Smeal? Is a better option to choose a different majorike Human Development or Communication Disorders?

Also, if it matters she wants Smeal. She originally applied to Sneal pre business but had Admissions update the app to DUS last week. (To clarify this was before getting a decision on our original app and Admissions told us she can still apply to something else for a second look if she doesn’t get into DUS)

Yes, if you accept your offer you’ll have some sort of online tutorial and an invitation to an orientation session (if the date doesn’t work you can change it). You can also be invited for a special scholarship weekend (“For the Glory”).
Typically, first semester, you’d take Calculus (Math 140 or 110) unless you got a 4 or 5 on Calc AB (in which case you’d take Math 111 - not required but really better for Finance), Macroeconomics (Econ 104), English 15/30H/137H, World Language (002 if you completed 2 or 3, 003 if you reached level 4 in HS), PSU 006 (a freshman seminar), and if you’re really ambitious a Gen Ed - total, 14-15 credits.
(2nd semester: Stats 200, Management, CAS -Speech/comm-, Micro econ - a weedout class-, world language or gen Ed).

I haven’t taken nor know any of those since I don’t study in the US. I study in Asia.
