Daughter admitted to Media Studies Harrisburg last night.
She submitted reconsideration (after fully vetting major options) to RPTM for UP Summer Start. Her grades are very average (3.3 w/1280 sat) and a super reach for UP (she knew this going in). She has worked for a major health/wellness company for past year and has expressed interest in this industry.
3.3 W would typically make it major reach but RPTH is not super competitive and if she was able to explain why that major/how it matches her background, she may have a shot (also depends on the weighting method: some schools add +1 for Honors some +0.1 !) Iām sorry I canāt be more optimistic but she clearly pivoted right away and did everything she could.
A concern would be if she could āsurviveā at UP - itās really huge and requires students to be really independent.
My DS eventually wants to major in Marketing with a focus on Sales. He has a 4.04 weighted GPA with 10 APās including AP Calc, AP Stats, AP Psych and more. Heās applying test optional, is OOS and double legacy. Which major has the greatest chance of acceptance given that he will only go if heās accepted into UP - DUS, Econ (Liberal Arts) or Psychology?
Depends on the profile - to the best of my knowledge, Biorenewable Resources would assume a more scientific profile (math through precalculus/H, bio chem physics + perhaps more) but would have fewer applicants, so odds would be good if you took a solid science load with Bs, whereas RPTH has more applicants with a less specialized academic profile who keep their fingers crossed that theyāll be lucky and their ECs will help them.
RPTH is self contained, the majorās requirements do not overlap with other majorsā, whereas Biorenewable pre-reqs include some overlap with other science majors (but instead of being expected to take Chem 110-111 at the same time theyāre split over 2 semesters, thereās Algebra-based physics like for Bio but only one semester of itā¦) that make it easier to switch if students wish. OTOH students may appreciate being in a smaller program, like in a bubble, and not be mixed with Eberly, Smeal, IST, CLA⦠students.
Both are very hands-on but in different ways.
Another criterion you may want to factor in: the ROI is better for Biorenewable Systems (more jobs, better pay) because jobs for Commercial or Community Recreation do not pay very well - but they allow students to live and make money with their passion.
(Different for Golf Management: it is a nationally ranked program - so, hard to get into and requires golf ranking if I remember properly.)
If he wants to major in Marketing the ONLY way into that major(as it is in Smeal) is direct admit to Smeal OR through DUS. You can not transfer from ANY other major into Smeal. We got that clarification for my now Sophomore Son when he went through the application process- it is also part of the reason the DUS pool seems to be so saturated (sadly)
And I can speak from experience that the double legacy OOS isnāt as powerful as we would hope. We are/were in the same boat - son had exact same stats. He did eventually get UP for Summer under DUSā¦but that was 2 years ago and as we are finding out with daughterā¦it is even harder this year to get UP
OOS engineering accepted mid November. looking to register for an accepted students day and there are white tracks and blue tracks on the website. Does anyone know what this means or how to know which one to sign up for? thanks
I think one of the tracks includes more about Penn State - a campus tour, etc. while the other one is shorter and more major specific.
I found this: ā White Track events are half-day visits designed for students who may have been to campus for previous visits and are familiar with the Penn State experience.ā
My daughter received her acceptance email came in at 12:00am this morning. In state, Psychology summer start. Stats uw GPA 3.75, w GPA 4.3 mostly AP and Honors classes, swim team, TO.
