I’m with the counselors. She is going to be admitted to UP. I think she just was in the ā€œpileā€ of engineering and they didn’t get to hers and they moved on to start reviewing a different major for a while… total guess. I have no idea. But I’m confident she’s getting in. Sometime next week more future engineers will hear. I am really hoping for her and look forward to hearing when you find out. If by some crazy chance she does not get into UP for engineering, she will get in for DUS under reconsideration.

Cannot agree more. It’s crazy. The amount of stress this has caused over the last few weeks despite my D25 having the stats to get in cannot be explained.
Some will say, it’s my own doing and that PSU has given until 12/24, so better wait; but it’s easier said than done, especially for someone like me who’s first and only kid is applying to college this year.
When you see other kids getting in, it’s natural to second guess your own chances and have doubts on the fairness of the process. I know what I’m saying isn’t really logical, but it’s a human experience.
My D25 got her decision today, and I’m a relieved father now.
But I totally feel the pain of those still waiting.
I’m not going to ask you to be patient ( I could not be) but I’ll pray that you receive your decisions ASAP.

Why are you asking for a second look for Smeal?

  1. premajor Smeal and premajor DUS have the exact same path to a Smeal major.

  2. she has an acceptance. Why risk that acceptance with asking about a harder major to get into?
(I don’t know the answer, but I would certainly ask the question if she asks for reconsideration, does the original offer go away?)

  3. lots of complaints about admissions staff and timeliness of acceptances. Why would you tie up their time with this request?

Trying to understand the goal here-

But what if they accepted him to UP for DUS and he ultimately decides he wants the 2+2? I’ve heard people saying you can only reconsider once so would he be locked in to UP then?

To add, her stats are similar with a lower gpa than my son and he just got pushed to 2+2 for Smeal. I would stick with DUS as well.

If you write an email, perhaps match her academic background and interests to the new major.
Otherwise, just request reconsideration for that major just like what you wrote.
:crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

Congratulations :tada:! If she got PSU UP DUS, she is, in fact, Smeal Premajor.
(You can only request reconsideration for a less selective major - She could request Smeal premajor Altoona or Harrisburg but it wouldn’t make any sense.)
You can now see if there are virtual events she could attend, etc.

If he likes 2+2, he can ask for reconsideration for another campus (those are usually processed faster). Unless he plans on commuting to Berks, he should request one of the full fledged campuses (Altoona, Harrisburg, Behrend). Berks is not a residential campus - it has a few dorms but they empty out on weekends and there’s not much to do on campus so students who stay there depend on Reading for their entertainment. They do have a cafeteria and food court open on weekends and a commuter meal plan.
Altoona is probably closest to UP both in vibe and geographically speaking.

If your experience with kids leads you to think this might be a viable career for you, then you can write about that in your request and apply to education. It’s not necessarily about hours, but about impact, interest and motivation.

Congratulations! Would you mind sharing her stats?

Nope

@MYOS1634 my son is in a similar situation; also given 2+2 - admission to Berks Smeal. He really would like UP of course. I am hearing that DUS is becoming competitive and that might not be the way to go. Can you offer any suggestions on other business type majors not housed in Smeal he could switch to? Or just other thoughts of other majors in general? We are OOS and Berks doesn’t seem to offer the type of environment that would be suitable for him. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Do you want to work in Education?
If so, highlight your experiences and how they led you to that conclusion. They don’t need to be formal (ie , you stepped up at your church/mosque/temple one day and that made you realize you’d like to try coaching at a local summer camp and then …= it’d explain why it’s only a few hours here and there).

PA divides Teacher Education into 3 levels
PK-4 (all subjects) - 4-8 or Middle Grades: English, Math, or Social Studies - 7-12 or secondary, with separate subjects.
Some subjects are K-12 like ESL, World Language… and if Secondary Education you can be certified in multiple subjects (usually related).
Bilingual Education (with Spanish, mostly - or if you studied French, ask the Francophone Studies Dept about French to Creole classes, although I don’t think the university offers them they may have contacts through Community Education) is in high demand at all levels, as is ESL - Penn State also offers an ESL certificate.

However, Elementary Education does not have a lot of overlap with other majors - some gen eds overlap but not Math (which meets the quantitative requirements but is applied to teaching) and of course not many Entrance to Major, so it’s not easy to switch. Secondary Education has a lot more overlap with the major you’re considering so it gives you a bit more time if you’re thinking of switching. Or you could stack the overlapping gens eds your first semester (ie., Stats100 or 200 - regular stats, respectively for Humanities or Social Science students, can be used for any of these majors - is ā€œplannedā€ for 3rd semester in the suggested academic plan but you could take it 1st semester and leave the ā€œproblem solving in math educationā€ class for later on. )

If you’re not super interested in Teaching, there are other majors.

It’s always easier to switch from UP to a branch campus, especially if he decides before March - there’s still space at all branch campuses till then.
You can call and ask point blank, if my child is admitted to UP and in February decides a branch campus night fit his needs better, is it possible to switch?
He can also ask to be reconsidered for Altoona/Harrisburg/Behrend.

Labor& Human Resources in CLA, especially if he had 3-4 years of a world language and English honors, with good communication skills. (This major can be paired with minors in Women’s Studies, Hispanic Studies… Or Organizational Leadership.)

HPA in HHD

Agribusiness in Ag (lots of sub specialties, including Marketing, Sales,…)

Note: Many marketing positions nowadays assume a strong background in Statistics or Applied Data Science.

I’m very confident you can ask to change to a Commonwealth campus if you’re admitted to UP without any problems. They’d love to get more students at the other campuses.

@MYOS1634
I’m just not sure about education. What are your thoughts on HHD Human Development and Family Studies?

After reading more about it I feel it aligns well as it would prepare me to pursue a few of the areas I’m currently interested in counseling or Occupational therapy.

Do you think I would have a good chance getting in with my stats and applying summer?

Penn State has always been a part of my life ( both parents are alum). I’ve wanted to go to UP for as long as I can remember. I just want to make the right decision with my one and only chance at reconsideration.

Thank you so much for your help!

@MYOS1634 This is super helpful, thank you! If he chooses a major outside of Smeal, such as the Labor & Human Resources major, would it be difficult for him to reapply to Smeal and when might that be possible?
