This is truly revolting. Bravo to the kid who ratted them out.

I am dumbfounded that young, computer-savvy individuals don’t get that eventually this kind of thing will come to the surface and that they will be caught. Unfortunately it sometimes takes years for it to come out, but do they really not think that someone will eventually slip up or that, like in this case, someone will do the right thing and report them? These students have potentially ruined their college careers, many of their employment opportunities, and more importantly the lives of their victims. I can’t imagine how ashamed their families must be, but on the other hand, I feel like this attitude must have come in some part from their families. How sad for the women they victimized.

What is going on with these guys?
You know you’ve been hanging around CC too long when you:
(What keeps me here is the fact that I almost always learn something from the parents who have experience or expertise on particular subjects. I am always thankful for that.)
Carry on. Looking forward to reading along.
Young, computer-savvy individuals are not as computer-savvy as some of us old folks who aged with computers.
For example, I told my son “I think you need to defrag your hard drive” and he was like “wahhh?” and he does programming and so on. The sense that yes, everything you do on your phone and computer is accessible by someone, even after the fact, even after deletion, is beyond a lot of the younger generation.
Also, from the news it makes it look like the government or someone else has to be actively surveilling you in order to have something like this “get out”, which is not true.
I do know there are certain people who are 100% sure of the indecency of all human beings they are in contact with. Happily, they are wrong.
There will always be folks inclined towards morally dubious and criminal activities and the spotlight is on the Penn State Chapter of KDR…
Younger people in my generation or younger aren’t always more computer savvy.
For instance, I had one HS classmate who was terrified of computers and was troubled about them becoming more commonplace in the office while meeting him during the summer during our undergrad years in the late’ 90s.
Also, many more younger folks except those who demonstrated strong passion/skill with computers are increasingly lost if they must go into the command-line to run or fix something after clicking on icons fails. This is one area older folks with computing experience seem to have more of an advantage in as when they started usiing computers, command-line was all/mostly what they had to work with.
Careful.
While applicable for someone running a computer with older mechanical hard drives, one should never use defrag on computers with solid state drives(SSD) which are based on flash memory with finite rewrite cycles. Defragging an SSD is not only unnecessary, but would ACTUALLY SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THE SSD THROUGH MORE WEAR AND TEAR THROUGH UNNECESSARY WRITING AND REWRITING OF THE FLASH MEMORY CELLS.
Don’t worry, we got one solid-state and the rest old-fashioned disks, and will likely for years to come. The price point is not there yet, and may not be for reasonable size HDs (I may be wrong…).
If these young 'uns are very well-off, I guess they’ll have solid state.
Don’t get all MTBF on me though…
I want their pictures in the paper. Iwant to know who raised them to behave so abhorrently. I know lots of guys this age, and none would participate and none would just allow it to go on. Good for whomever turned them in. But I want a public shaming. And don’t anybody start with the girls shouldn’t get that drunk…
Just wanted to put that info out there as I’ve read about and seen far too many people who still believe they need to use defrag on SSDs or when cloning images from mechanical hard drives don’t disable the automatic defrag setting on their operating systems.
Using defrag on SSDs is not only a waste of time, but also accelerates wear and tear of its flash memory cells.
As for SSDs commanding a premium, that’s true. However, the premium has been shrinking greatly within the last couple of years to the point even mid-sized businesses are adopting SSDs as main drives for workplace desktops and workstations for just office applications and basic internet.
I personally continue to use mechanical HDDs because I do need a lot of storage space for my money and I don’t really need the speed premium.
However, others…including increasing numbers of small and medium sized businesses do feel the speed premium is worth it considering even the smaller SSDs are large enough for their workstation needs. Especially considering most such companies want to strongly encourage their employees to store all files on the server for ease of backup and so a failed machine/SSD/harddrive won’t mean important files are lost forever.
Another example of people who don’t think they will be caught or their activities revealed.
Stay classy, KDR.
People still use Facebook?
Whoever is in charge has made a great error by not indefinitely suspending the frat and then kicking them out of PSU when it is proved that this was done.
A one year suspension? Embarrassing. This is a major step backward in rebuilding their image.
How quickly before they come to their senses?
Totally agree with you Sax. As a Penn State parent, I would like to see that fraternity gone.
I know kniknee, it is mind boggling.
No rush to judgement but at least an indefinite until they prove it. Then gone forever.
Statement from Penn State:
Without suspects, or identified victims, what can the fraternity be charged with? Not to say they shouldn’t be, I am just wondering. IFC can make the suspension permanent, however.
I saw this on the local news last night and, like eastcoastcrazy, figured someone would post it here. This just reinforces the negative stereotype of fraternities held by some people (me included). I am not surprised at all, sadly this is behavior I expect of frat boys.
Are any of the nude subjects identifiable and under age 18? I see potential for been charged w distributing child pornography.
The members of the fraternity should be expelled. Every single one, unless they can prove they didn’t know about the pictures.
Anyone want to sue? Let him. Then his name will be all over the newspaper.
