Penn State Sandusky scandal

gdogpa- I asked earlier how did he drop the ball. He may have but there may be answeres for whatever you feel he did wrong. So what did he do incorrectly?

Back toward the beginning of this thread I wrote that I feel sorry for Paterno. I’m certain he had no clue this thing was going to blow up in his face and taint every good thing he has done for Penn State and the young men who benefitted from his mentorship.

But being clueless is not a defense.

“So what did he do incorrectly?”

He didn’t act in the best interests of his community.

Both Paterno and the school president allowed Sandusky to use the facility. According to the AD Curley Sandusky’s status as a professor emeritus meant they could not limit his campus access.
It seems to me that for whatever reason both Paterno and the school president were not treating Sandusky as a sexual predator. Were they evil as mini says, covering up as other have said, loyal to a fault or were they unaware of the exact nature of what Sandusky was doing- as they testified.

NewHope- he reported an accusation and may have been told it was turned over to CPS. If that was the case what more should he have done. If he resigned from the charity when there was an investigation would that have possible compromised that investigation?

Professor emeritus, baloney, they could easily have said they didn’t think it was a good idea he continue using the facilities, given the accusations and rumors

The rape occured in the PSU football showers and was witnessed by a PSU employee, who walked away from the incident without calling police. Sandusky still had keys to the facilities, access to the facilities, and an office in the building.

Even as late as last year, he was recruiting for Penn State.

Many of the major players in the “cover up” were involved with second mile, as board members and contributors, and the football program allowed him to bring young boys to the games and the sidelines, which is just ‘grooming’ for the pedophile, as anybody knows.

It’s not as if we’ve never seen this kind of thing before, the Catholic Church covered up abuse by Priests for centuries, simply by not talking about it, not reporting it, and telling themselves if they moved the offender to another place, he would stop. I assume the 1998 resignation was the start of that rigamarole.

As I’ve said before, I don’t think Paterno broke any actual laws, but just because the laws he didn’t break don’t exist doesn’t mean we don’t know he broke laws of basic human decency.

The most telling thing in this whole GJury report is the lack of any attempt to find any of the victims. A boy was raped in the showers in 2002, witnessed and left there by a young man who was later made assistant coach, and nobody, not one of these “men” thought they should try to find the boy to make sure he got help. I guess they didn’t worry about the 3rd mile.

“According to the AD Curley Sandusky’s status as a professor emeritus meant they could not limit his campus access.”

And, how, pray tell, (even if this is true, which I very, very, very much doubt) does an Assistant Football Coach become a “Professor Emeritus”?

I will acknowledge that many of you may be correct in your charges against all those involved but do any of you see even the remote possibility that you may be incorrect about your accusations against any of the individuals involved? Is there any possibility that you may be wrong and therefore what is the harm of not rushing to judgment?

To get hime away from the football program, perhaps?

from the letter by the PSU student to her classmates/the media:

Seriously?! Did she really just attribute the lesson of doing the right thing to one of the guys who is heavily embroiled in this mess BECAUSE HE DID THE ABSOLUTELY WRONG THING? THIS is why everyone is criticizing these kids. They are saying moronic things. Heck, I’ve got another year until college and even I know better than a lot of them.

" Does it help victims of abuse if innocent people are held responsible for abuse that occurred? "

That depends on who is determined to be innocent…and that is to me what is at the core of this thread

I don’t excuse anyone who had any knowledge of the abuse and assumed that someone else would follow through

I strongly believe that very little will help the victims

Certainly it won’t come in a monetary form

It might be helpful if the victims had access to intensive therapy , but it doesn’t seem like anyone wants to come forward and admit they were the recipients of Sanduskey’s special treatment

Many childhood abuse survivors pass that legacy on to their children…and that includes sexual assault
Think of it people

What exactly do you think I could be ‘wrong’ about?

Those are the facts, Tom. I didn’t make them up.

Do you mean I could be wrong and Paterno didn’t know that Sandusky was a pedophile?

mini I have no idea but it is possible it was the carrot to remove him in 1999 since they may not have had cause for removal. I have no idea of his contract status or his position with the University. A friend told me he was a tenured professor teaching in the physical education area. I do not know if that is true.

No, i believe Paterno was aware,to some extent,of rumors and innuendos,at the very least, and was told explicitly what happened in 2002, but being from a generation where the phrase" anal rape" was neve uttered,he told the AD and VP, fondled or something sexual happened, couldn’t bring it upon himself to re-utter thise words

He is getting a 59k yearly pension from PSU currently

Yes poet- he may have not known and even when he had doubts he may have been told investigations revealed nothing. Apparently that happened in 1998 and we do not know what he was told in 2002. All the other issues we have no idea if he knew of any of them.

McQueary told friends “I did the right thing…you guys know me…the truth is not out there fully…I didn’t just turn and run…I made sure it stopped…I had to make quick tough decisions.”

Tom-

Okay, here’s the question I have. If somebody told you that somebody had raped a child at your place of work, would you wait a day to call your superiors in order to “report it?” Or would you call 911?

NO but was Paterno told that?
