Penn State Sandusky scandal

Tom 1944…you you really giving paterno a pass here?..really?

As a Penn State alum, with a daughter in her sophomore year and a son who was just accepted, I am heartbroken first of all for the victims in this case and secondly for the irreparable damge to the name and reputation of Penn State.

We try to live our lives under the “succes with honor” philosophy and were proud to be Penn Staters. My daughter was overjoyed when she was accepted and loves her school. She loved JoPa and respected Graham Spanier. We all believed in everything Penn State stood for and are crushed.

Why any man would think that the way to protect Penn State was to protect Sandusky and themselves is beyond me. Any decent man that I know would have immediately called the police and turned in Sandusky, friend or not, football or not.

Doing the right thing is what I expected of the men who portrayed themselves as decent. I can’t reconcile what I thought they were, and what they have turned out to be.

They destroyed the lives of at least eight boys and now have destroyed everything we loved about Penn State.

Bottom line is every incident should have been reported to Child Protective Services by any witness within 48 hours so that they could have investigated.

I am giving no one a pass. I am waiting until the entire story or at least all that we will really know is out until I form my opinion on Paterno, the GA and the others charged. Joe Paterno may have failed here but I will wait until more facts come out before I decide that.

I wish the DA’s office could provide clarity on their opinion of Paterno’s role here.

I also wonder if reporting the incident to Schultz who I understand had oversight of the campus police meets the requirement of the law.

Just for Spanier’s comment of giving his unconditional support to the AD and VP should be a reason for his dismissal NOW…The Board of Directors need to show they DON’T support these guys

I hope we find out if Paterno/Penn State administrators discussed the earlier charges with the DA and were told that they would not pursue the case. Don’t you think that the DA would have told them, yes, the charges were most likely true, but they did not have the evidence? IF this is true, HOW could you even be in the same room with a child molester?

rom- what if they were told the 1998 incident did not rise to the level that any reasonable determination could be made whether abuse occurred or not? The DA is now dead so will we ever no for sure?

“I also wonder if reporting the incident to Schultz who I understand had oversight of the campus police meets the requirement of the law.”

The law does not state you should notify up the chain. It states you are to notify Child Protective Services in order to avoid what happened here, nothing.

So should the GA have been charged by the DA?

Tom1944,

Let’s assume your ‘possibility’ is indeed true, wouldn’t ANYONE with a few brain cells question seeing Sandusky in the company of young boys at PSU games, events, etc after the 1998 incident?

“So should the GA have been charged by the DA?”

Possibly.

Tom, Schultz states in the grand jury report the 1998 and 2002 incidents are similar.

Tom 1944…did you read the report? A grad assistant sees Sandusky performing anal sex in the shower with a 10 year old, goes to Paterno’s house upset, and what does Paterno do? Does he call the police?..NO…child protective services?..NO…What does he do?..calls the athletic director and the cover up pursues…absolutely disgusting behavior.
How many more young lives do Sandusky ruin in the next 12 years? Paterno had the power to stop it…he didn’t.

And the 1998 report went to the DA with no charges filed.
Ohiomom- who was more obligated under the law to report the incident to the Child Protective Agency- the GA or Paterno?

geeps I read the report. Did you take the same stance on the Duke case or did you take a wait and see position there

gdopa- when they saw Sandusky with children were they to snatch the kids and run? Was Sandusky lawfully banned from being around kids?

^wow…just wow Tom…

^^^ That’s the difference. Paterno had the power to stop it. The grad asst didn’t.

Even if no charges were filed, i certainly would be aghast at seeing Sandusky with young boys after that incident, wouldn’t you?

Perhaps the reason the DA didn’t pursue the earlier charges is because Penn State officials circled the wagons and wouldn’t cooperate fully.

^ I wouldn’t be surprised if Paterno himself called in to stop the investigation…I guess this scum is Godlike out there

I’m with qdogpa, It is very puzzling that no one seems to have questioned why an adult male always seemed to have a succession of young boys around him-even accompanying him to hotels without his wife present. It is really unbelievable that so many people saw disturbing behavior and did nothing about it.
