Pepperdine or ASU CS

I am considering between Pepperdine and ASU for CS but the issue is ranking here and which one is better. I like the LA area more and would probably be better for my family as they are slightly inclined to move to LA. I also like the environment and weather in LA. My main worry about ASU is that they won’t have as many job/internship opportunities. I guess for me it really falls down to which one has better program for cs and for business together as I want to do a double major so that I go into Investment Banking. Thank you in advance.

Do you prefer the religious environment at Pepperdine?

Assuming both are comfortably affordable, pick the college that you feel will be the best fit for you. There are enough substantive differences between the two colleges (ex. size, location, religion to name a few) that one option should stand out as where you want to spend the next four years. I don’t believe that either option is a typical feeder for investment banking but perhaps @Catcherinthetoast can help there.

Thanks but I am no longer participating as an “IB Expert”. I am sure others will be able to offer opinions in my absence.

What makes you think that ASU wouldn’t have as many jobs/internships?

ASU alums are well represented throughout the tech industry. Phoenix is a hot bed of tech jobs, in fact.

Now you mentioned a double major. Have you been admitted to each major (a business major as well) at each school? If not, you 'd have to see if that’s possible. And you might ask each school’s career center about past placements in the secondary area you mentioned.

One last thing - schools don’t have jobs or internship opportunities. Schools have access - either through companies that target them or in more cases, companies that list with them. The hard working, persistent students often get to take advantage of those.

But it’s students get jobs and internships - and you have that same opportunity at either school. Nothing is given to you.

Then one thing you stated confuses me - your family is potentially moving to LA - but how is that impacting your college choice. Do you plan to live at home?

I think both are fine schools but they are different schools and one definitely has a religious aspect to it.

Best of luck in whatever you decide - but I think you should do more research. I think you are making “assumptions” without researching.

Best of luck.

PS - I found this on the ASU website. I don’t see something similar at Pepperdine but you might look for something or ask if they have something.

For the moving part I’m mainly thinking for my younger brother and just in general being able to visit my family. Right now my brother would be in state for Washington only giving him access to UW as a top school and in state acceptance rate + tuition but in California he would have access to way more institutions for in state tuition and acceptance rates. Separately my family wouldn’t move to Arizona with me.

Is CS computer science? @happy1 implied IB and I am sure they know something.
LA is probably stronger for a finance career and IB, although ASU may feed there as well.

The title is CS - and the first sentence says CS - I am considering between Pepperdine and ASU for CS.

But the last sentence (in the initial post) mentions IB: falls down to which one has better program for cs and for business together as I want to do a double major so that I go into Investment Banking.

CS is computer science, but OP also mentioned interest in IB in their post.

So you will double major, but use only one at the end. Pick either a software career or IB ? Is that your intention?

my true intention is going into ib. I applied with CS but aim to double major it with finance or econ so i can be a versatile asset in the ib industry.

I guess my confusion is - you are going to college.

Neither is close to Washington but if your family moved to California (a big state) - you’ll be in school, living the student life.

Arizona State is close (a cheap flight from most places in CA) and with direct airport access but hopefully you’re enamored with school and living the college kid life and not home all the time - which would take away from your student time.

Given your note on in-state tuition, I assume there are budget issues here? Is one noticeably cheaper than the other?

Also, yes, CA has a lot of great schools but so does Washington!!! If your family moves it’s great for them but that seems a big expense and headache, just to access lower cost tuition - but that’s me

Anyway, I gave you some info that ASU puts out related to their IB prep program - although it seems very competitive. Does Pepperdine have a program or IB track record? Ask them.

And since you are in at a single major but want to double major at both, I’d probably start there - where can I do so - at ASU, Pepperdine or both?

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Why do you want to be an investment banker?

I’m sorry and I don’t mean to be passive aggressive with this but what does that have to do anything with my question?

Good answer!

Because I think it is reasonable to challenge here since it is a difficult ask and CS would be a less common background as would be your school and some things in your profile from your last post.

Sometimes further clarifications help… and I know a bit about banking. You do not have to answer if you do not want to, or you can PM me.

Here’s my advice. Choose the school that won’t put you into a mountain of debt. Pepperdine is a private university. Do you have a comparable financial aid package that can put the costs in line with ASU? If you have to co-sign large amounts of debt to pay for it, the school is not worth it. Investment Banking is one out of literally thousands of occupations you can do with a business degree. It’s never worth going into large amounts of debt over, especially when you have thousands of other routes to go after graduation. If you go the CS route, Phoenix is a major tech hub and ASU is a heavily recruited school.

OP specifically stated a desire to enter investment banking in the initial post.

yes, but i see challenges with that happening based upon a couple of factors and i am wondering why because there are other options besides IB for talented students like him. Feel free not to help him by just giving him a school. Your choice.

In fairness to other posters, OP mentioned ASU or Pepperdine and that’s why comments are directed toward those two.

Well the reason I want to go into Investment banking is mostly due to the fact that I think the skills I have fit with it. Obviously many people want to work for good wage but I’m good with number and have great intrapersonal skills. I am also a person that likes to socialize which would be good with regards to clients. I also have good attention to detail. Right now to be honest that’s what’s mainly leading me. My mother is an investment banker and also believes it would be a good fit for me as well.
