Happy wife. Happy life.
Learn from other people’s mistakes. Life is too short to make them all yourself.
My dad taught me that one, but of course he might have gotten it from someone else if it’s famous.
“Life is a series of compromises.”
My dad.
an act of kindness is never wasted.
It’s been my life’s motto since 2003 when i first read it.
A quote from the famous philosopher, John Connor (Terminator
):
“The future has not been written. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves”
Let go or be dragged.
Never kick anyone on your way up. You never know who you’ll meet on the way down.
One more: I can’t take credit, but it is one that I’ve used with my kids and, honestly, myself.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

Great thread, @maya54!
Thanks for sharing. These are all fabulous.
In my personal life, as a mom and grandmother: “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove… but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” - Forest E. Witcraft
In my professional life, when I had an especially tough day: “speak quietly to yourself & promise there will be better days. whisper gently to yourself and provide assurance that you really are extending your best effort. console your bruised and tender spirit with reminders of many other successes. offer comfort in practical and tangible ways - as if you were encouraging your dearest friend. recognize that on certain days the greatest grace is that the day is over and you get to close your eyes. tomorrow comes more brightly…” - Mary Anne Radmacher
From my parents, from Luke 12:48: For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
This is my new favorite thread. Thanks to all for sharing!
“Great thread, @maya54!”
Thanks! I have to say I hesitated to post this because I thought people might think it was stupid. And I agree that everyone has posted such great quotes!
I heard a new favorite while watching a horror movie last week
As the hapless hikers are looking for a quicker way to home and discussing going through a forest (not a good idea) rather than staying on the longer but well-worn trail one of the characters says …
“As my mom always said, " If a short cut was REALLY a short cut, it would be called a route.”
If it’s worth dolng, its worth doing it correctly.
And the flip-side: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
or as my sister would say…“close enough for government work…”
TNSTAAFL [tinschtaffel]: There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
Imperfect action beats perfect inaction.
@AboutTheSame --I read it in a Heinlein novel as TANSTAAFL (there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch).
If you can be anything, be kind.
G.K. Chesterton: “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.”
I know this contradicts some of the other mottos. I take it to mean that, while we should strive for excellence, we shouldn’t let fear of failure stop us from enjoying life, trying new things.
I tend to be a perfectionist, so I am motivated by being given permission to be imperfect.
Also: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. (Like the free lunch…)
Minimum viable product.
