Fig tree wrapped in bird netting, harvest in a month or two. Wrapping while they are still inedible means birds & squirrels haven’t learned there’s a tasty meal to be had, so they leave the tree alone.

The blackberries are starting to ripen. Across the street there’s a several acre field of berries, open to anyone, with literally hundreds of thousands of berries. Fresh berries on ice cream, heaven.

Interesting to see how things differ around the country. I have a blackberry vine in my backyard and it produces fruit in the middle of June. Since a vine only produces one crop I’ve already cut it back to the base. And every year the base sends up another shoot that will become next year’s blackberries; I have it strung up on a different wire and it’s about 10 ft long.

These are invasive Himalayan blackberries that are the bane of my existence and a giant nuisance in my neck of the woods! They smother all vegetation and create erosion hazards on slopes. We eradicated several truckloads of blackberry brambles off our property. After that, native vegetation took off like crazy. The berries are edible but need sugar and are a bit too watery for a pie.
