Pianos

I’m an amateur pianist, and I’d like to keep it up. Are there (good) pianos available for student use? Where would I find them?

There is a variety of instruments (including pianos) in small rooms in the basement of Old Cabell for student use. Other people may be able to comment on their quality and availablity.

The music practice rooms in Old Cabell are probably what you’d like. There’s also a baby grand (I think) in a nice, old room on Newcomb Hall that anyone can use.

I think the French House has a piano, too…but I’m sure that’s just for residents. :)

Students can reserve practice time and, with their student ID, check out keys to the practice rooms from the receptionist in the Music Department in Old Cabell Hall. Those who are taking lessons have scheduling priority. The (more or less soundproof) practice rooms are in the OCH basement and each one is equipped with a pretty decent upright piano.

Just before and as classes begin, as students are auditioning for groups and signing up for lessons, the Music Dept. staff will be sitting out in the lobby of Old Cabell to explain the procedures.

Thank you all!

hey, dean j where is the room that has the piano in it in newcomb? I know there’s a piano in the ballroom but I was hoping there was somewhere more private where i could play

This thread is from 2011. The baby grand is not in Newcomb. The Old Cabell practice rooms are private and virtually sound proof.

@gbb123 --There was a piano in Runk when I went to visit my daughter 2 weeks ago, and it looked like students were playing/practicing.
