Some things to consider: Are you in-state or out of state? Id assume that being in-state would offer advantages to admission.
Your ECs - what ECs do you have? Often, ECs are becoming the way that applicants stand a part from one another.
What may interest you is VT’s CDS, which has data on their first year class: https://aie.vt.edu/content/dam/aie_vt_edu/common-data-set/23-24/CDS_2023-2024.pdf
Per your GPA, here is the statistics related to it:
First gen
instate
wanting to do something in the business field
wanting to do something in the business field
Are you planning on applying into VT as an undeclared, or specific major? If you want to go business, VT does have the Pamplin School of Business (which I presume is on your radar) which offers a variety of majors related to business.
Here’s another good tool for you, VT is very transparent when it comes to their data. Here you can search for statistics concerning each of VT’s school’s data on admissions (Applicants, Accepted Students, and matriculants): https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index
Looking at that site, the following data is for Pamplin:
Admissions 2023-24 Applied 7566 Offered 3861 Enrolled 1180 Offered Rate 51 Yield 30.6
Thank you so much for this website! Based on these stats would you recommended to go in undeclared, or a specific major? If I were to go in undeclared does that mean I would have to apply to this school later on?
Does Pamplin have a certain number of seats, and if so do you think I have a chance?
Also how easy is it to change majors at Tech?
When I see GPAs this high I am always a bit suspicious. They must be weighted in some way. The CDS is supposed to report unweighted GPAs. Most Ivy and top 20 schools have average admitted GPAs in the range of approx 3.9 but VT reports and average of 4.06.
Even though 3.4 UW/3.9 W looks low compared to this chart, I think OP will be middle of the applicant pack with that GPA. Good luck!
Do you think this could be due to Virginia tech putting out the weighted gpa instead of unweighted?
It surely could be. Or they could just use whichever is on the applicant transcript (our school only published weighted).
At a different school I know of (Elon) they recalculate GPA based on their own system and report that to CDS which is why theirs is also reported to be super high.
It does sort of undercut part
Of the purpose of the CDS if schools don’t use unweighted where 4.0 is the highest possible GPA. But…they can do what they want
Definitely weighted. And you don’t know if they weight differently than your school does.
The UW gpa is low. Your odds will not be great but if you don’t try. And oh by the way - they rate first gen as the most important criteria, along with rigor, essay, gpa. So you have a chance. I’d call it a reach.
But you also need back ups - which could be in or out of state.
You’ll be able to build a list after you get your test score - and once you determine a budget.
I’d apply for the major you want, not undecided. You want to study what you want to study, even if it’s not at your top school.
Good luck.
is there a way to only submit my weighted gpa? I know that my unweighted is super low and that it is dragging down my application.
@Speer I saw on a different forum you had some similar stats. I was just wondering on what you did to make yourself standout. I’m really nervous for apps because my gpa isnt high and is nowhere close to many of the people on here. I would really appreciate your input
No. Your hs will submit your transcript as your transcript is - and schools will evaluate it as they do. For example, Florida publics take your unweighted and add .5 for Honors and 1 for AP. They wouldn’t care what your weighted is - they’d figure it out on their own.
Listen you take your shot. Hopefully it works but if not there’ll still be plenty of places for you.
There’s a ton of schools for people with your gpa. You’ll know more after your test and you need a budget. What can your family afford ?
Don’t worry about being non competitive. If your list is built right, you’ll find lots of places to call home.
thank you so much for your responses! Since it is definitely a reach, would you recommended EDing or EAing vs normal application?
I would EA. Va Tech no longer has ED.
Again, it’s a reasonable reach but you need a comprehensive list. You are getting too attached. It’s one of many fine opportunities. JMU is another fine in state one.
For any school where you might ED (you can’t at Va Tech), you need to make sure it’s affordable before doing so. ED is not something most use, etc.
Do you think I would be able to get into JMU with these stats?
More likely but again cart b4 horse.
Get your test score back.
Provide a budget if you want more feedback and people will give you many ideas.
Focus on your test and don’t worry about school names quite yet.
I think you have a great shot at JMU. The overall acceptance rate is approximately 75 percent. Although they don’t report GPAs of admitted students in their Common Data Set, I think you GPA will be fine/competitive for admission. Good luck!
Do you have any recommendations on where I should apply with those stats? I talked to my parents and I’m good with out of state as well
