Sophomore (so room for improvement)
GPA 4.1 weighted, 3.5 unweighted; top 15% of class at very competitive HS
Lots of APs – Statistics/US History, and next year she’ll take AP Calc BC and English as well
Accelerated in math – taking precalc in 10th grade–wants to be a math major
Only PSATs so far: 650 math, 710 writing, 600 verbal
nationally ranked ice skater (synchronized); other activities include ice dancing, ballroom dancing, theater
Hispanic fwiw

Thanks!

^I don’t know your chances but your D should consider taking more AP’s junior year because OOS is really competitive. She should really study for the SAT’s to get a better score and don’t forget SAT II’s, I heard UVA strongly recommends them.

forgot to add, junior year grades are most important, so your D needs to well junior year so she can raise her GPA and class rank.

Taking pre-calc isn’t really accelerated anymore in the US, it’s just a little advanced. I wouldn’t say its super important though… Taking Calc BC in junior year is great, however! If her high school offers linear algebra for those super high-achieving math students, definitely take that senior year.

Her PSAT’s don’t look promising for an OOS student. OOS admissions for UVA is brutal, she needs to work on the SAT scores, as RADtomato said. Also the SAT II’s are big. Keep the extracurriculars going and improvement is always key.

“your D should consider taking more AP’s junior year because OOS is really competitive”
-Truest statement for UVA. She needs to take as many AP’s as she can. Science, Math, English, History. Taking AP sciences (Physics all the way
) are very good. AP Computer Science is beneficial, considering math majors need to take a few of those courses. Being introduced to it in high school will prove beneficial. Other AP’s like Economics and things are also good, but core AP’s definitely mean more.

I wish you good luck to your daughter!

She is taking 6 APs: English, US History, Statistics, Math BC, Chem and Physics. I think it will kill her to do more than that! She is taking three SAT IIs as well, most places she would apply to require them. She will also take linear and also calc 3 as a senior.

Anyway good to know, thanks!

You will get more responses in the “Chance Me” part of the forum.
GL at UVA.

Ah there we go, much better. Yeah I think she’s set courseload-wise. Just work on dem SATs and SAT II’s, and she should have a good shot, just like every other OOS applicant.

And as UVAorBust said, the Chance Me forum is a better spot for this thread.

Thank you! I will rechance next year!
